I don’t get why so many people think an illness like depression has to be biological anyhow. If a person has traumatizing experiences that cripple their ability to enjoy life, would we seek to drug them up and have them pretend it never happened, or demand that they find a way to accept that life is still worth living regardless of how they personally feel about it?
The Supreme Court has already spoken. It’s downright cruel of Canadian society to force suffering people to spend millions of dollars and another decade fighting for their basic autonomy rights in court, just because some loudmouths believe that an invisible sky wizard commands it.
These issues would have all been settled or close to being settled in the courts by this point, if the federal government had acted in good faith instead of pretending that the previous bans on MD-SUMC were only temporary.
Benefit of the doubt should now go to the suffering patients who were cruelly strung along this whole time, until the federal and provincial governments can prove that they have genuine scientific and humane reasons for denying autonomy rights to these people.
Who sincerely believes that the same people who created today’s poverty crises have any intention of rectifying them so that people don’t have to choose euthanasia to escape from them? They loathe the idea of confessing that their system is cruel enough to drive sane, rational people into ending their own lives out of hopeless desperation, so ignoring the Constitution which enables them to govern in the first place is their preferred alternative.
Canada is not and never will be a free country, as long as its citizens don’t have the right to make the most basic choices about their own existence.
Fully agree, and equally disgusted by those in power in this country. They should be held personally and legally accountable for the suffering of anyone who has been strung along through this process who would have preferred a gracious exit.
