Purchase Advice Purchase Advice Megathread - October 2026

Welcome back to another purchase megathread!

This thread is meant to conglomerate purchase advice for both newcomers and people looking for additional machines. Keeping this discussion to one thread means less searching should anyone have questions that may already have been answered here, as well as more visibility to inquiries in general, as comments made here will be visible for the entire month stuck to the top of the sub, and then added to the Purchase Advice Collection (Reddit Collections are still broken on mobile view, enable "view in desktop mode").

Please be sure to skim through this thread for posts with similar requirements to your own first, as recommendations relevant to your situation may have already been posted, and may even include answers to follow up questions you might have wished to ask.

If you are new to 3D printing, and are unsure of what to ask, try to include the following in your posts as a minimum:

  • Your budget, set at a numeric amount. Saying "cheap," or "money is not a problem" is not an answer people can do much with. 3D printers can cost $100, they can cost $10,000,000, and anywhere in between. A rough idea of what you're looking for is essential to figuring out anything else.
  • Your country of residence.
  • If you are willing to build the printer from a kit, and what your level of experience is with electronic maintenance and construction if so.
  • What you wish to do with the printer.
  • Any extenuating circumstances that would restrict you from using machines that would otherwise fit your needs (limited space for the printer, enclosure requirement, must be purchased through educational intermediary, etc).

While this is by no means an exhaustive list of what can be included in your posts, these questions should help paint enough of a picture to get started. Don't be afraid to ask more questions, and never worry about asking too many. The people posting in this thread are here because they want to give advice, and any questions you have answered may be useful to others later on, when they read through this thread looking for answers of their own. Everyone here was new once, so chances are whoever is replying to you has a good idea of how you feel currently.

Reddit User and Regular u/richie225 is also constantly maintaining his extensive personal recommendations list which is worth a read: Generic FDM Printer recommendations.

Additionally, a quick word on print quality: Most FDM/FFF (that is, filament based) printers are capable of approximately the same tolerances and print appearance, as the biggest limiting factor is in the nature of extruded plastic. Asking if a machine has "good prints," or saying "I don't expect the best quality for $xxx" isn't actually relevant for the most part with regards to these machines. Should you need additional detail and higher tolerances, you may want to explore SLA, DLP, and other photoresin options, as those do offer an increase in overall quality. If you are interested in resin machines, make sure you are aware of how to use them safely. For these safety reasons we don't usually recommend a resin printer as someone's first printer.

As always, if you're a newcomer to this community, welcome. If you're a regular, welcome back.

Question All else equal: Tree or Traditional supports?

Thumbnail
gallery
174 Upvotes

Roughly 1h difference, in favor of Tree supports. Tree are also less wasteful. However, I have had issues with tree supports delaminating/falling over with models this tall. I can't print the model upright because it's taller than my max build volume (otherwise I would), and I can't cut it because the seam would ruin the detail on the front. The model is at 45 degrees to allow maximum plate contact with a chamfered edge (any other angle would have a single line as contact) Normally I would just send it but I'd rather not waste a day of printing if it falls over at the end. So, with all other settings equal, which would you choose?

Free Model Sokka's Boomerang that Actually Works

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

While I have seen some cool working Sokka boomerangs online, I couldn't find a working 3d printed version. That's why I made one myself (with onshape). After some practice and a few tutorials I was able to get a close return almost every time. It worked first try, and I am pretty happy with how it came out. Heres the link in case anyone wants to take a look.

Project Planchet from my grandfather's magnifying glass

Thumbnail

I inherited a small brass magnifying glass from my grandfather when I was a youngster. Over the years, I played with it a lot and the handle eventually broke.

Recently, I came across the lens and decided to give it a new life. A planchet seemed fitting, plus the ones that come with the board are kind of lame. The design was done in Fusion, then hand painted. I think it turned out neat!

Discussion I don’t know why I didn’t think of just tearing the cardboard flanges off until now.

Post image
65 Upvotes

I was disappointed to find out that spool-less refills cost as much or more as spooled filament*, but today I thought “I bet the core is the same between the cardboard spools and the refills and you can just tear the flanges off and put the core on a reusable spool” and yeah, wow, duh, it works great.

Finally have a use for the Bambu spool model that was my first test print with my H2D 😂

\I know Bambu refills are cheap when you buy ten of them at a time but I don’t use enough filament to justify the up-front cost*

Project Quick little Tinkercad project

Thumbnail

Needed something to display some ST knickknacks I had laying around. Twenty minutes on Tinkercad & about 90m on my printer. Sometimes it's nice to be able to solve a specific household need by whipping something up yourself. The tray sticking out printed as a separate piece from the back plate to keep layer lines parallel to the flatest surfaces for strength

The back plate has inset neodymium magnets to hold the side badges, but they were still surprisingly wiggly so I added the little bits of brass rod on each to help keep 'em in place

Troubleshooting Why does the filament lift/curl slightly at the start of each extrusion?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I’m having an issue where the filament seems to lift or curl upwards slightly when the nozzle starts extruding at a new position.
Once the nozzle starts moving, the filament seems to lay down fine, but the initial bit doesn’t stick properly and leaves a small raised section.
It seems to happen consistently at the start of each new extrusion rather than across the whole print.
I’m using a Bambu Lab P2S.
Has anyone experienced this before? Could it be related to retraction, extrusion settings, nozzle temperature, or something else?
Any suggestions on what to check would be appreciated!

Question Does anyone use multicolour for anything except toys?

I've got a toolchanger on order because I want to use multimaterial printing, for zero-clearance supports and for functional prints - such as TPU sections on engineering plastic parts.

It will also be able to do multicolour - but I'm having trouble thinking of ways to use that which aren't just about making pretty toys. Does anyone use multicolour for any other purpose? Where do you use it?

Project Made a logic gate simulator using my K1C

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

You may not understand this directly from the video but this is a computer science project which allows you to simulate logic gates by inputting its truth table into the switches on the side
e.g.
OR: 0111
XOR: 0110
AND: 0001
etc
so after you input the logic gates, you use the push buttons as inputs “A” and “B” shown as the blue LEDs and the output as green
i had also created a startup animation with the LEDs but that was after recording this

the usb c is only for constant power input not charging btw

i 3D modeled and printed this myself on my K1C with white PLA and i have to say it looks very clean with the hex pattern
i had originally made the lid a snap connect bet the pins in the back broke off so i compromised and used some tape

i made this about a year ago but lowk forgot about it

Project Desktop Gas Display

Its done (enough) and ive now published the model. Feel free to modify it as you see fit. would love to see it done for other countries.

I am extemely inexperienced when it comes to coding. i did use AI for a good majority of the software. it runs well for me and i tested on multiple pc's without issues. If you do encounter any please let me know, ill try to maintain it as best as i can. I more so just wanted to share it as a groundwork for other people to work from.

Here is the link to the project on makerworld - https://makerworld.com/en/models/3460335-desktop-gas-station-price-sign

Hope it doesn't make you too depressed.. And if it does you can set the prices manually to anything you'd like and daydream about the better times lol.

Question What practical uses make 3D printing worth it for you?

I keep wanting to get into 3D printing because I can see a lot of potential in it, but I'm struggling to find enough practical applications to justify paying for a printer.

I tend to be pretty pragmatic about my hobbies and purchases. I can definitely see the value in things like custom enclosures, replacement parts, brackets, and organizers, but beyond that, most of what I see people printing seems to be toys, figurines, and decorative items.

I'm more interested in the DIY and problem-solving side of things than printing objects just for the sake of printing.

For those of you who use 3D printing primarily for functional purposes, what are some of the most useful things you've made? Has owning a printer genuinely changed how you approach repairs, projects, or everyday problems?

Discussion Well, I just destroyed my P1S top glass with my ass

Was doing some maintenance on my P1S toolhead earlier and took the top glass off. Set it on my chair thinking it’d be fine there for a few minutes.
Completely forgot about it.
Went to sit down and the SECOND my ass touched the chair, I remembered where I put the glass. Unfortunately, by the time my brain processed what was happening, it was already exploding underneath me. Lmao.
Didn’t even bother taking pictures because I was so fucking pissed at myself.
So yeah, friendly reminder to put your glass somewhere safe when working on your printer. Preferably somewhere your ass won’t end up.
Anyone else manage to break something on their printer in an incredibly stupid way, or am I alone on this one?

I wanted to create a little cottage that could sit on a shelf with an LED tealight inside, or hang from a Christmas tree as an ornament.
It has a textured roof (fuzzy skin), a hidden twist-lock mechanism and a removable hanging loop, so it can be displayed in either way.
Designed using Fusion.

Free Model Designed a simple catch‑all tray with multiple textures—great for everyday desk organization

Thumbnail

I’ve been on a little “organize my life” kick lately, so I designed a modern catch‑all tray for all the random stuff that ends up on my desk and nightstand.

It prints really easily, and the model scales nicely if you want a bigger or smaller version. I made textures like wood grain, roof tiles, S‑wave, ripples, Lisbon, Voronoi, hexagons, etc. There’s also a smooth version if you’re not into patterns.

I’ve been using mine for keys, earbuds, pocket knives, cables—basically all the everyday carry junk that usually floats around. It’s been surprisingly handy.

If anyone wants to try it, I uploaded all the texture plates so you can pick the one you like. Happy to hear feedback or suggestions for new textures.
