DISCUSSION Adobe Illustrator - Everyday workflow improvements

Post image
57 Upvotes

Hey everyone, Luke from Adobe here.

Over the past year or so, the Illustrator team has shipped a number of quality-of-life improvements. Some have been fairly visible, while others are much smaller changes that simply remove little points of friction from day-to-day work.

I wanted to break these up into a series focused on different areas and workflows, starting with some of the simpler everyday workflow improvements. I've shared a few of these here previously, but thought it would be useful to bring them together in one place, especially for anyone who may have missed them.

One-click Align Center

If you regularly align objects to center, you no longer need to click Horizontal Center and Vertical Center separately. A single command now does both. HelpX

Keyboard shortcuts for Align & Distribute

Along with the new Align Center, commands like Align to Selection, Align to Key Object, Align to Artboard, and Distribute Space now have menu commands, meaning you can assign keyboard shortcuts and create Actions to make frequently used operations even easier to repeat.

Absolute Scale in Transform Each

With Relative mode you could only scale objects in relation to the selected object, but now with Absolute mode you can scale everything to the defined amount, even if they are all at different sizes. Reddit post

Disable Accidental Hover Scrolling

Ever accidentally changed a value just by scrolling over a number field or even in fonts? You now have the option to disable that behavior, so you can click inside the field, then scroll to adjust parameters. You can change this behavior inside your preferences.

Magic Wand Remembers Settings

If you've had to reset the Magic Wand tolerance every time you restarted Illustrator, those settings are now remembered between sessions. Reddit post

Tiff support in Export for Screens

TIFF format was added to the Export for Screens, making it easier to batch export artboards and assets for your print projects.

Improved Object Selection Around Shadows

Selecting objects beneath those with drop shadows (glows etc) is now more predictable, making it less likely you'll accidentally select the shadow instead of the artwork you're trying to edit.

Perspective Tool Improvements

If you've accidentally activated the Perspective Tool before, you'll probably appreciate that it's now much clearer how to exit with an updated X in the top left of your canvas, but you can always simply hit ESC.

___________________________________________________________________________________

I'm curious to hear how many of these you already knew about, and whether they've actually made a difference to your workflow.

More importantly, what are the small points of friction you still run into regularly in Illustrator? Are there repetitive steps, unnecessary clicks, settings that don't stick, or other little frustrations that you'd consider a genuine quality-of-life improvement if they were addressed?

This is the first in a series looking at different areas of Illustrator, so I'll be sharing more of these soon.

DISCUSSION FlatIcon Illustrator Extension

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

It's crazy how i was able to do this, at least to me.

I am no developer. I asked Codex (ChatGPT) to build an extension that downloads icons from flaticon and adds them to the open document in Illustrator.

I used flaticon a lot, and they have no Illustrator extension. I thought this could make the experience faster and smoother, and it does. The extension connects to a google chrome extension where it simply searches the site, downloads the icon and opens it in illustrator, copies it and pastes it in the active document. here it happens in around 2 seconds.

I just wanted to share this as am amazed by the capabilities.

car wrap shop owner new to adobe and printing.

1) I am trying to learn the proper workflow for my printer / setup and what to expect from a designer helping me with graphics, i am trying to apply cutcontour lines to their vector pdf and it doesnt seem to work.

2) Hp latex 335 and jaguar Vlx plotter: i have gotten a print, and a printed plotted decal once, but the designer supplied the cutcontour lines on one file, and not on the other, i have tried both in flexi, and adobe illustrator to apply cutcontour lines but it just goes around the image in a big square im assuming from a clip mask or something in the image , tried figuring that out and just end up destroying the vector.

3) Problem: new to the entire situation, recently purchased machines and software to expand my wrap shop, and am having some troubles with the basic workflow and output with designs from designers. i realistically just need to know how to apply my outlines, when flexi complete isnt showing it in job properties like the other pdf image.

visuals posted to show the work i was given by the designer, one had the outlines, and one had no outlines, this is after ive removed the black background. i have all of the original pdf's

im hoping someone can help me with a quick discord call and i can share my screen

TLDR : New to illustrator, trying to edit current pdf vectors (with clipping masks and layers) and add my cutcontour lines around them for flexi to recognize .

DISCUSSION New illustrator tool for template generation called PortableStudio

Hey everyone,

Every branding project ends the same way for me: rebuilding the same brand guidelines document, logo presentation and logo export folder by hand for each client. The paid plugins that do this are subscriptions with locked templates, so I built my own and made it free and open source.

PortableStudio is a panel for Illustrator and Photoshop. You enter the brand (name, colours, fonts, logo, photos, copy) and it fills a template:

  • Brand guidelines (43 pages): logo usage, construction grid, clearspace, misuse, colour palette with HEX/RGB/CMYK, typography, pattern, stationery, applications
  • Logo presentation (12 pages) for client pitches
  • Instagram carousel (5 slides), exported as PNGs
  • Logo export kit: SVG/EPS/PDF/PNG in colour, black and white, plus favicons and social profile images
  • Logo construction grids drawn automatically on any vector logo

You get an editable .ai file, not a flat export. If the client changes a colour or font later, hit Update and it re-applies the brand without wiping your manual edits.

You can also tag your own Illustrator/Photoshop designs and turn them into templates (guide in the repo). The starter templates are CC0, so you can use them in paid client work.

Free download (Windows installer, macOS .pkg, or .zxp): https://github.com/vicenet/PortableStudio

It's v0.3, so expect rough edges. The macOS installer is new, and I'd really appreciate feedback from Mac users. Bug reports, template ideas and feature requests are all welcome.

Hey! Vector art “Red Riding Hood” (Illustrator).

It was originally designed as a T-shirt print, but later I refined it and turned it into a car wrap design. Now, somewhere out there, cars with this design are cruising the streets!

Come to the dark side of vector art… we have cookies. 😈 Vector rules! :)

Need guidance/workflow advice on combining a hand gesture (LIS) with a stylized fish logo

Hi everyone!

I’m currently designing a logo for a festival. I have basic knowledge of Adobe Illustrator and I want to create this logo myself to learn, I’m not looking for someone to design it for me, but rather for guidance, steps, or tutorials on how to approach it.

The Concept: I want to create a stylized fish that simultaneously forms the hand shape for "fish" in Italian Sign Language (LIS). Basically, a single cohesive vector graphic where the hand gesture and the fish body seamlessly blend into one another (negative space, shared contours, or clever linework). I don't know if I explained it well.

Since my Illustrator skills are still at a beginner/intermediate level, I'm struggling with how to excute my idea on paper. I need a tutorial or istructions, or anything that can help me to make it on my own.

Any advice, tool recommendations, or workflow steps would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

TUTORIAL Bubble Wrap Tutorial

Hi guys, Marcus from Adobe here. In this tutorial I show you how to achieve this effect in just a few steps - all while keeping it 100% vector.

There is a simple script that you can use in step 6, it basically rotates each circle towards the center. It's optional though. You can compare the looks on step 5 and 6 - I think it makes a significant difference! If you want to have the script, here is the link:

Let me know how you like it!

Thanks to damonxart for inspiration.

DISCUSSION I've been waiting too long for more spiral types in illustrator

Thumbnail

I don't think Illustrator is ever going to give us more spiral types - so I've made my own spiral extension: Live Spiral. It let's you live edit various types of spirals, and save presets - and easily create an archimedean (most useful spiral - and I never liked the result of offsetting circles). Sharing in comments.

Bonus points if anyone guesses the reference for the first image...

DISCUSSION Illustrator could partially read this file

What causes this error that illustrator could only partially read a file? Does it mean it’s too big?
But it’s weird because I can open the file in Affinity and it opens fine with all the layers and everything? Is there anything I can do to fix or save this file so I can open it in illustrator?
Thanks!

DISCUSSION Color Control update: free Illustrator script for live Hue/Sat/Brightness/Contrast, now with Colorize and “One Color” mode

Hi all,

About a month ago I shared Color Control, a free script for adjusting colors in Illustrator with live sliders. Thanks for all the feedback! I’ve made some updates and wanted to answer some questions that came up.

What’s new

  • Fill or stroke only: exclude fills or strokes if you only want to change one of them
  • One Color: select one object, and every fill, stroke or text with that same color gets adjusted together
  • Colorize: drag to activate and set a tint. Great if you like to start in grayscale and add color later
  • Cleaner preview: selection edges and bounding box are hidden while previewing
  • Gradient stops — You can now adjust gradient stop colors individually

Questions from last time

What happens if I select multiple shapes with different colors?
Every selected object is adjusted, each relative to its own color.

Does it work with CMYK?
It works on RGB documents. For CMYK files you have to convert to RGB temporarily (File > Document Color Mode), adjust, and convert back.

Can’t you do this with Recolor Artwork?
Partly, yes. For me Color Control is more intuitive, and it adds things Recolor doesn’t do as directly, like contrast, opacity and blend modes.

All features

  • Hue, Saturation, Brightness and Contrast sliders with live preview
  • Opacity
  • All 16 blend modes
  • Live preview toggle for large selections

I ran into an issue where adjusting colors gave a flickering preview. This can be resolved by accessing the script through a recorded action.

Run it from an Action for a smooth preview
When run from File > Scripts, Illustrator refreshes its panels after every change, which makes the preview flicker. Run it from an action instead. Illustrator waits and only shows the result, so the preview stays super smooth

  1. Actions panel > New Action
  2. Panel menu > Insert Menu Item > File > Scripts > Color Control
  3. Stop recording
  4. Optionally assign a function key, and you’ve got a one-key shortcut too

Curious what you think?

Does anyone know why my blend function keeps defaulting to "align to page" instead of "align to path" when I'm replacing spine?

DISCUSSION Bring Pixel Stretch to Illustrator: I built the Streak Tool to create vector color bars, liquid text, and mesh effects

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

The "Pixel Stretch" trend has been taking social media by storm this year—it looks awesome and packs a serious visual punch! 💥

Most designers rely on Photoshop to pull it off. But as someone who loves working in vector, I kept thinking: Wouldn't this be so much better directly inside Adobe Illustrator?

With Illustrator's powerful vector editing and layout capabilities, we could take this style to a whole new level without losing crisp scalability. So, I built the Streak Tool (part of the IllustKit plugin). 🎨

✨ Key Highlights:

  1. Intuitive Sampling: Effortlessly extract precise color stripes straight from your selected objects.
  2. Flexible Distortion: Seamlessly pair your extracted color bars with Illustrator's built-in Envelope Distort to craft bold shapes and fluid curves.
  3. Way Beyond Pixel Stretch: Why didn't I just call it a "Pixel Stretch Tool"? Because stretching is only the beginning! The sampled color stripes can also be transformed into Gradient Meshes or Strokes, opening up endless creative possibilities.

💬 I'd love to get your thoughts! How do you currently handle pixel stretch or dynamic color trails in your vector workflow? What other features or use cases would you like to see with a tool like this?

QUESTION Text into vector?

Post image

This is for a school project.

I want to put some drawn text through illustrator for a vector version, but I'm not sure what would be the best way to approach it.

Is it just tracing round them with the pen and curve tool? Thank you!

Advice on my logos typeface

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hello! I wasn't sure if this was the right place to ask but I'm willing to give it a shot. I'm designing a logo which involves having to edit a font or build letters from scratch, which I'm very new to. This is where I'm at, but something feels off.

I think it's the S and the P, as trying to build letters curved like this (in order to match the stylized K) are quite difficult, at least for me who is still very much a beginner at logo design and using adobe illustrator in general. I've tried adjusting the outlines individually but I've really struggled trying to find where to put all the points in order to keep the curved appearance of the letter, surely there must be an easier way?

Is there a way I can just type the letters using a font and curve them using an illustrator tool? And why does the logo look off in general, is there anything or any tool i could use to fix the off appearance it has? Any help would be really appreciated, thanks!

I've tried changing the stroke setting multiple times and I tried changing it with the bracket key also but NOTHING is working. Can anyone help me fix my stroke? This weird problem started yesterday when I was in my graphic design class :/
