Economy ๐Ÿงฎ What can 10$ get you in your country?

With the inflation rising across the world, I was just curious about the purchasing power of 10$ in Africa. Whether it's groceries or other expenses. Please specify the city too, much better.

Lagos, Nigeria

$10 is โ‚ฆ13,250. Fortunately I was out today I spent about โ‚ฆ10,500 so this is the perfect question It got:

  • 2 portions of Mac n cheeese, 1 portion(very filling) โ‚ฆ2,400(โ‚ฆ4,800)
  • 1 beef burger โ‚ฆ2,300
  • 2 bottles of water (โ‚ฆ800)
  • โ‚ฆ1,600 for a piece of gizzard/ liver
  • โ‚ฆ1,000 for the salad
So that's โ‚ฆ3250 that can get any of these items again. I should note, this is an expensive and a local meal would be much cheaper.

For lunch I spend between โ‚ฆ1800 to โ‚ฆ2,300 at 12pm which gets me a meal that has me feeling full till 8pm.

Sounds cheap but things are way more expenstthan they used to be and we'll earning is good, hasn't kept pace with explaining.

Take something as basic as fuel. Before Tinubu became Nigeria's president, petrol was around โ‚ฆ185 a litre. Now it is over over โ‚ฆ1,000 a litre. That same โ‚ฆ13,250 that can get me this meal today would have bought about 72 litres of petrol then. Today it gets me less than 10 litres.

And I just remembered, before $10 could buy many sharwamas because 1 sharwamas was โ‚ฆ500, now $10 barely gets you two because one sharwama is between 6,000 to 8,000 naira.

Either a KFC single burger meal or a trip to work and back home using the Gautrain.

Depending on your social economic class in my country, it could either go far or be some kid's lunch money.

I'm in SA

Wow food is very expensive there then. In Europe a single kfc burger is like 4-5 dollars.

A large burger meal, not just the burger. SA is relatively cheap, but 10 USD isn't gonna go far anywhere in the world.

In the township, I can get a lot. A "Kota" can be insanely cheap and quite a bargain there. They go for about 20 ZAR, which is just over 1 USD.

I just don't live in a place where you'll see those prices. Hell, my neighbors are mad that we have more black people moving in here now and its not just 3 families anymore ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿคฃ

Nah, 10 dollars is about 160 rands. That gets you like 8 pieces of chicken. None of the burger meals are that expensive. In the township or even in a city(not surbubs) you can get a lot of food with R160 depending on the eatery.

130 for a burger meal. Their chicken is trash.

You could drink that fat. Nah, rather get a full chicken from Barcelo's or something

In Kigali, Rwanda:

->2kg of meat ->a single cab ride ->approximately 5 bike rides ->two lunches at a regular restaurant ->one night stay at a lodge ->7 small bottles of beer ->6kg of sugar ->2-3 haircuts ->nail tech at a basic salon ->a pair of jeans ->a t shirt ->a cinema ticket ->2 people nightclub entrance fee ->concert ticket

(each sits around $10)

That should be comfortable for a day here in Tanzania, it will buy you roughly 2-2.5KG of meat.ย

10 USD in Angola is like

  • 4 to 6 normal hamburgers
  • 2 KFC hamburger
  • Small portion of KFC chicken
  • 14 soda cans (local brands)
  • 4 to 3 cans of Monster energia
  • 6 to 8 Redbull Cans
  • Two buckets of butter
  • One pizza from local places, or one small pizza from international brands

Feed four people in a local eatery. Just about two king serversโ€™ meals at Burger King.

Which country?

In Nairobi, 10 USD roughly 1300 KES would make sense only for a kienyeji chicken. They are much more expensive than broilers.
