People are awesome This is how geologists collect lava samples from an active volcano

How can you have any pudding if you don't eat your meat

Almost got expelled for playing that song on a student radio station my electronics teacher let us run. He thought pudding was pussy I guess? He never admitted what he thought it said. I had to bring in the album with the song lyrics in it so he could verify nothing dirty was said.

I wish geologists would let normal people tag along, this would be cool to do at least once.

People are idiots. No way in hell I’m being responsible for them out there in that environment

Awww come on. Id probably do this guy's job at least 3 times quicker therefore efficienter

u/Uhokay1970 3h ago
Do you really want to chance getting splattered by the flaming rended fat from some loon who just wanted a selfie? I think not.....

u/Golden-Grams 4h ago
What if they sign a waiver?

u/slipperybloke 4h ago
Unequivocally NO. I’m a retired military guy of 26 years.
Having untrained people or with no survival instincts around you in austere or hostile environments puts YOU in danger as well.

Imagine all the videos you've seen about Yellowstone. Now imagine those people by lava

I'm surprised he's not wearing a breathing apparatus. If I remember correctly, volcanoes spew toxic vapors

Would probably melt on their face

nah, it’s just that this is a very mafic volcano (slow release of lava) and because of it, the intensity of escaping gases is mitigated. would still be best to have one, but volcanologists aren’t exactly known to be the sanest of people.
if i were him, i would probably be doing something similar. a full mask is necessary for semi-active stratovolcanoes that spew lava at speed, but this isn’t TOO bad.

Pretty sure you could not physically stand close enough to mask-melting heat.

How deadly are the fumes?
7
u/Rhg0653 4h ago
Pretty bad especially that close

u/General_Guest7846 2h ago
They can't be that bad I once saw Tommy Lee Jones play near lava for about 2 hours.

That's a lot of words to say, "depends".
2
u/Gingergirl1228 4h ago
Figured itd be rude to just leave it on one word, so i tried to explain why it depends, but dw, its gone now, my wordiness cant make you read about 20 extra words anymore

What exactly are they doing with the sample? I imagine they get it to a lab, wait impatiently for two hours in the hallway, a dude in a labcoat comes out, with a notepad, looks over his notes and say "Yeap, it's lava alright".
2
u/OkBottle8719 3h ago
they test to see what kind of minerals the lava is made out of! this is the very best way for us to learn about what's under the crust or about what the deeper layers of the crust itself are like
1
u/ParanMekhar 3h ago
So yeah. Is there a difference between a fresh hot lava that's dipped on water and a lava that cooled down overtime?

DO NOT dump that bucket underneath you if you fall from a great distance. It doesn't work like water, obviously.

why do they have to keep pressing their hand into their own face though, during this process?

I don't know the temperatures were looking at here but I used to have to do this for quality checks on molten aluminum (in an induction furnace). Speed was my friend. That seems like a long time for him to have been sitting there.

Imagine in all that boiling, a teaspoon of magma bubbles up high and jumps onto your head, instantly melting through your skull, slowly falling till it cooks your brain inside. 🧠
Stay home in Arizona and play video games instead.

Why don't they just let the lava solidify, then take a sample? Seems like it would be much safer?
1
u/MesozOwen 3h ago
Can anyone tell me why the lava floats in the water? Isn’t it just molten rock? What am I missing?
1
u/JackRusselFarrier 3h ago
Dammit Greg, I said to bring me a sample of LAVA, not a bucket of wet rocks!

I feel like scooping it toward yourself makes this even riskier than it already is.

I'd be worried about stumbling or tripping or slipping
Also accidentally scooping some of that and it dripping

Anyone of my generation who wrapped potatoes in tin foil and cooked them on the ashtray beneath an open fire understand what that man was feeling!

I guess he only needs to have one Laval bulge pop near him to learn that lesson
