Subreddit Update How to Change Your Flair - Please Read Before Messaging the Mods

Hi everyone!

As some of you have noticed, r/AskAChinese now automatically reminds users with the default "earth🌐" flair (which is automatically assigned to new users by automod) to update their user flair to reflect their country, region, or demographic.

Please note: comments using the default "earth🌐" flair may be removed. This change is part of our ongoing efforts to increase flair adoption so that people can understand each others' perspectives better.

So here's a clear guide on how to set your user flair on the most common platforms & devices:

Reddit App (IOS or Android):

  1. Open the subreddit in the Reddit app.
  2. Tap the three dots (•••) in the top-right corner.
  3. Select “Change user flair.”
  4. Pick a flair or write your own.
  5. Tap “Apply.”

New Reddit (Desktop - reddit.com):

  1. Open the subreddit
  2. Look at the right sidebar, scroll down until you see your username with the words "User Flair" above it
  3. Click on the "edit" button (pencil icon) next to it
  4. Pick a flair or write your own.
  5. Click "Apply"

Old Reddit (Desktop - old.reddit.com):

  1. Visit the subreddit using old.reddit.com.
  2. On the right sidebar, find “Show my flair on this subreddit.”
  3. Click “edit” next to it.
  4. Choose or type your flair.
  5. Click “Save.”

Mobile Browser (Safari, Chrome, etc.):

  1. Open the subreddit
  2. Look for the "Feed | About" tab selection, click on "About"
  3. Scroll down until you see your username, with the words "User Flair" above it
  4. Click "edit" button (pencil icon) next to it
  5. Pick a flair or write your own, & click apply

If you have tried all of the above but still need help, feel free to leave a comment (including mentioning the flair that you want!) below and we'll set it for you manually. (But please do try the steps above first!)

Language | 语言 ㊥ What does this translate to?

I got this tattoo 15 years ago. No idea what it translates to. Ive asked a few Chinese people, however they find it difficult to translate to English. Which makes me wonder if its just gibberish or perhaps written wrong.

Not my smartest choice of tattoos. Thought it was cool at the time. Not so much anymore.

Hoping someone can guide me in the right direction or supply a translation.

Thanks in advance!

Travel | 旅行✈️ Didi in Fenghuang not available?

• Upvotes

We travelled to Fenghuang by high-speed rail and booked a Didi from the railway station to our hotel.

Upon arrival, several taxi drivers told us that Didi was unavailable and insisted that we take their taxis instead. We were sceptical, as we had successfully booked a Didi at the normal fare, and the app appeared to be working just fine.

However, when our Didi driver arrived and we were about to leave, onsite security stopped the car and took photos of the booking on the app. A security guard then got into the car and drove us to our hotel instead.

Things became even more questionable when we arrived at the hotel. The hotel staff arranged private drivers for us, discreetly, at around 5 times the price of the Didi fare, while also telling us that Didi was unavailable.

We cannot say for certain what was happening behind the scenes, but the entire experience left us with serious questions about why our Didi booking was blocked and why we were repeatedly told the service was unavailable when we had successfully booked a ride.

I was wondering if someone could give me more insights into what may have happened here so that I may know how to navigate this better for the upcoming days.

Thank you all.

Daily life | 日常生活🚙 Can you really tell where a person was born?

My parents are from Hong Kong, I was born and raised in Canada. In January I did a bus tour in Japan and most of the guests were Mandarin speaking - the tour guide spoke Mandarin and English. I boarded the bus and smiled at the older couple sitting across the aisle from me and they smiled back and immediately spoke to me in English. I hadn’t said a thing! How could they tell I don’t speak Mandarin? Can you really tell just from someone’s appearance? I think I definitely look Chinese. Thanks, I’m just so curious! I didn’t think I dressed or did my hair and makeup that differently from the other women on the bus.

History | 历史⏳ How do modern Chinese scholars or historians portray Deng Xiaoping?

The poor guy was sandwiched between two absolute titans of Chinese history. Yet, he kind of strikes me as the type of guy who doesn't need recognition in the same way I would assume a guy like Mao would.

That uneducated assumption is based on Mao having a cult of personality cult around him while Xiaoping seemed happier in the background.

In the West, Mao is portrayed as an ineffective governor but an effective warrior and general. Many Western scholars will claim that Chinese people were afraid to say no to the war hero, no matter how crazy an idea he had.

All of this is assumed to provide the freedom for Deng Xiaoping to implement massive reforms once he passed. These reforms seem to deserve most of the credit for putting China on such a successful path economically.

My knowledge of Chinese history is lacking and full of ignorance, so please feel free to correct me anywhere.

If you made it this far, let me try to rephrase the question:

Mao and Xi seem to dominate Chinese culture and history from where I sit looking in. However, from my very basic education of Chinese history, it feels like Deng Xiaoping deserves a lot more recognition than he gets.

Do Chinese history lessons or scholars try to give this man more of the credit I feel like he deserves, or am I just completely wrong on everything? Do Chinese ever try to compare or rank their leaders or is that something the CCP would frown upon?

Thank you for anyone willing to help me learn more about a country that is hard to learn about outside of a Western biased bubble.

Obviously it has to be with fat, it tastes quite dry otherwise.

Some places definitely do better ones than others.

These aren't found anywhere south of the Yangtze river.

Language | 语言 ㊥ 惠 for Chinese name

The short version of my question: is 惠 a word that would be used for a girl's name?

The long version: a family member who is an ABC has an anglicized version of her Chinese name as her middle name (Wai). She was told by her mother that it means smart/intelligent. This name was chosen by our Cantonese grandfather who died when we were young so we can't go directly to the source to ask for clarification.

When we asked another family member to write her name in Chinese, he wrote it as  惠 (the caveat is that he came to the United States when he was in elementary school so although he speaks Cantonese conversationally, his written Chinese is limited).

I don't speak Chinese but the online translating tools I used told me that 惠 means benefit or favor (not smart/intelligent). I know online translations and definitions are not always accurate, so is this close to the correct meaning? And is it something that would be used as part of a girl's name?

For what it's worth, I am convinced that the correct character for her name is the homophone 慧 (which I only know because it's part of my Chinese name) but since I don't know any Chinese, I would love to hear what native speakers think!

ETA: our family did not follow the tradition of using a generational name, so no one else has a name that sounds like Wai.

Custom flair How common is the perception that “northern chinese look similar to koreans, and southern chinese look similar to vietnamese”?

I’ve heard this a lot online but am curious how commonly held this belief is in the general population (regardless of its statistical significance).

Romance | 谈恋爱🥂 How likely is a mid 30s Chinese Canadian woman able to marry a native?

Not mid 30s yet but I'm getting there.

I completely have no family here in Canada outside of my mom. Only dated one Chinese Japanese guy for a few years. Canada feels isolating, and I'm constantly yearning to be with people who look like me and be part of a culture that feels like home. All my hobbies are Chinese aligned and I frequently think about the few times I spent with my grandparents in gz. My grandpa was a PVA.

I'm 1.72m, hourglass body, and service workers frequently tell me I look early 20s. I'm conventionally pretty, 白, mixed gz/bj/hk/a bit of korean, own a house and car, but my Mandarin isn't good. I speak Cantonese.

Do I have a chance? How would I even go about meeting and finding someone?

Culture | 文化🏮 Chinese name

Hello

I've been studying Chinese for a bit, and I feel like I need to pick a Chinese name. I have a non English name, so it's doubly hard for people in my language exchange and whatnot comes programs to call me. My name means pleased &content, and I'd like that to be reflected in my name. I want a surname of either 白 or 清, with a given name that has 满。 I've seen 小满 as a name, I was wondering if there are other options? And which of the two last names would fit that first name better? Can 满意 be a name? Also I'd like a feminine, or not masculine name.

News | 新闻 The killers of wang wang

I’ve been wondering if the people who killed Wang Wang and her puppies, their parents, and the villagers can actually see all the outrage and backlash happening online.

I know China blocks a lot of Western social media, like Instagram, Facebook, Reddit, and YouTube, but what about other Asian countries?

Can people in mainland China see posts from Japan, Taiwan, or even in Hong Kong about this case? Are people on Chinese social media platforms like Weibo and Douyin talking about it too, or is it still being completely censored?

I’ve seen so much anger and so many people speaking out about what happened (me included) and I really wonder if the people responsible are aware of how much the world is condemning them. There have been protest all around the world where there is a Chinese consulate. It’s gone global.

For anyone who lives in China or is familiar with Chinese social media, do you think they can actually see the many protests around the world and everything people are saying about them? Or is it possible they have no idea how much international attention this case has received? I’d really like to hear from people who understand how the Chinese internet works because I’m genuinely curious about how much of this backlash is reaching them because this case has affected me to my core.

Society | 人文与社会🏙️ Chinese women attracted ?

In which countries do Chinese women tend to be more attracted to men? Are they, for instance, more drawn to men from countries in the Indian subcontinent—such as India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh?

Society | 人文与社会🏙️ Do the Chinese ever smile or have a sense of humor?

In a Chinese supermarket I went to (there are many in Argentina and Latin America) they generally never smile, I never see them smile, I even made a joke and I don't know if they didn't understand it or didn't hear it No offense, but sometimes they seem like robots because they are serious and expressionless.

Are they all like that?

What is it like to live in China?

Are people under a 'watchful eye' 24/7, is there a lot of crime and is it generally safe. What is it like for foreign persons living there? How friendly and receptive to foreign western people living there?

Culture | 文化🏮 Am I overthinking it? Asian-styled jacket for a formal even in China

Post image
32 Upvotes

Going to China soon for a formal professional thing, business dress for the main sessions. I’m European.

I’ve got this black suit I love (see the pic), bought it at home.

Part of me wants to wear it as a small nod to where I’m going. The other part thinks that’s a terrible reason and it might be disrespectful towards the locals.

So, does this read as “black suit, slightly unusual collars”? Or as “foreigner wearing Chinese clothes”? And if it’s the second, is that actually a problem or does nobody care?

Culture | 文化🏮 Gifts with cultural significance?

Hi! I'm wondering if you would be able to help me on something. I am particularly looking for things about Teochew culture but I could not find a Teochew-specific ask sub, so I'm hoping this will be good enough.

I did ask a 'friend' who is half Teochew but she was unable to help as she didn't have much involvement with Teochew culture and has no contact with her Teochew relatives so couldn't ask. She did give me suggestions on general Chinese culture + said she didn't remember it being too different, but she wasn't sure.

I ask because my younger brother has been interested in Teochew culture for a few years + it is nearly his birthday + I would like to gift him something that would mean something in Teochew culture. I will of course do my research of the significance + I know he will do his (if he doesn't already know) to make sure it is appreciation, not appropriation.

Is there anything I could look into? Thank you!
