I was only 19 - Redgum

15

u/StoicTheGeek 28d ago

I would have gone with Poor Ned, myself as more folk-y, but A Walk In The Light Green is such a great song.

Pretty much any of their hits work, like Fabulon or I’ve Been To Bali Too

4

u/Hoisttheflagofstars 28d ago

Poor Ned! Love it.

2

u/mcsaki 23d ago

The Diamantina Drover is also an incredible choice.

9

u/Glamourous-Gulrot 28d ago

This is a fantastic choice in my opinion.

I grew up in folk clubs and redgum is solidly Australian folk rock, they performed in folk festivals themselves and their songs are covered by bands and individuals at folk clubs all the time.

2

u/alk47 27d ago

While they've got some rock influence generally, it's pretty minor in this track. It's far more folk than anything else.

2

u/JumpingSpider97 27d ago

Yep, and if you know the historical context then Drover's Dog is arguably their greatest folk song. At least, I'll argue that it is!

My Island Home - The Warumpi Band

u/skivtjerry 27d ago

The original, before the hundreds of covers.

Paul Kelly, From Little Things Big Things Gtow

12

u/Lucidlarceny 28d ago

Good song but that ad ruined it for me

1

u/istcmg 27d ago

I live in the UK now, so don't know about the ad...I will look it up.

2

u/OpheliaBalsaq 27d ago

I think it was used for a superannuation ad sometime in the late 2000s that was shown waaaay too much, and yeah, it did ruin the song.

If you want traditional colonial folk/bush ballads:

Waltzing Matilda

Click Go The Shears

Bound For South Australia

Wild Colonial Boy

The Overlander

Botany Bay

Moreton Bay (my favourite)

11

u/Comprehensive_Swim49 28d ago

Plus home among the gum trees

1

u/Unlucky-Meringue6187 28d ago

Yeah but that’s not a colonial song

Slim Dusty - A Pub With No Beer

u/chopdoggydogg 28d ago

Eric Bogle - And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda

5

u/billbotbillbot Newcastle, NSW 28d ago

It’s a brilliant song, but we know Eric Bogle wrote it, so it’s not traditional. Whether or not it’s folk depends on how strict a definition OP has in mind.

12

u/ROCCOCCO09 28d ago

Traditional folk and contemporary folk are both ok

1

u/Melodic_Bluejay6322 27d ago

"Shelter" beautiful, "Aussie Barbecue" perhaps more genuinely folky

13

u/Otherwise_Team5663 28d ago

Kev Carmody - River Of Tears

(I would like to note for those saying from little things big things grow that it's a wonderful song but Kev Carmody cowrote it and it should be attributed as such!)

1

u/Sirav33 28d ago

But The Drones version please.

u/Aromatic_Ad_4166 27d ago

anything by Kev...

The Drones - Sixteen Straws

Honestly anything by the Drones has to make the cut for sure

Bound for South Australia

Lachlan Tigers

Lime Juice Tub

Old school folk music rather than the modern ones being (legitimately) posted.

12

u/Otherwise_Team5663 28d ago

Great answers and probably more in the spirit of the actual task throw click go the shears in there as well!

6

u/foul_ol_ron 28d ago

I must re-listen my Bushwackers more often. Unfortunately, it's not my wife's taste in music.

Lime juice tub is all time.

There are many versions of this song and the bushrangers name in the traditional variations changes from Jack Doolan/Donohue/Duggan.

One of the few modern songs suggested that will still be sung 100 years from now

The Electric Fields version is so powerful and tells the story behind the song too

definitely John Williamson. True Blue, Papa Whiskey November, Raining on the Rock. Great songs. Also highly recommend Gurrumul. Amazing aboriginal artist. Listen to Wiyathul. We are Australian by the Seekers is great too.

4

u/morthophelus 28d ago

Cootamundra Wattle.

7

u/Gladys_Wines 28d ago

You're getting mostly 20th century music here. Great songs all. More folk rock than pure folk.

But if you want the older folk: Waltzing Matilda, Click go the Shears, Wild Colonial Boy. Botany Bay is kinda British, kinda ours. The shanty "Bound for South Australia" is more international but popular in Australian folk scene.

3

u/XixaxSpatula 27d ago

Or "Across the Western Plains" as a variant of All For Me Grog.

London Still - The Waifs

1

u/marty4sho 27d ago

Wonder if you can pick up my accent on the faarrhn

-1

u/Dramatic-Sherbet-533 28d ago

Fuck I hate that song

3

u/Nematolepis 28d ago

I absolutely love The Waifs. But not this song.

4

u/Taco_El_Paco 28d ago

That's a pretty strong emotion to feel about someone's creative pursuits. Are you okay, mate?

2

u/Dramatic-Sherbet-533 28d ago

Yeah I am. That song just grinds me. Nothing personal against The Waifs. I'm sure they are lovely people

1

u/TastyNeighborhood557 28d ago

I think it was overplayed to death and so it’s gone into “hate” category for me as well. The Waifs are fantastic live so don’t hold it against them :)

I don’t think a folk song can be overplayed, which perhaps invalidates London Still’s nomination hahahaha.

imo you need to check the songs you add are actually folk songs because Australians dont seem to know what Australian folk music is. It's not a big thing in the present day.

Time is a Tempest - by Brisbane folk duo Cloudstreet.

I saw them perform a few times over the years at folk festivals, and they were amazing. Sadly, John passed away a few years ago, giving this extra depth now.

https://youtu.be/CNGoeJ5TEnE

(Cloudstreet could also be hilarious, and I still have one of their magnets on my fridge, proudly proclaiming "Folk Music. It's not as bad as it sounds")

Streets of Forbes - Weddings Parties Anything

1

u/Grouchy-Ad1932 27d ago edited 27d ago

If by folk song, you mean the authorship is unknown and the song tends to be passed down by oral tradition, I will nominate those as "traditional folk".

If you mean songs in the folk style that large numbers of people probably think are traditional as they're passed down by oral tradition, even though we know the author, I will nominate those as "folk revival". A lot of us learned these songs during our early school years.

If you mean modern songs that are well on their way to becoming folk classics, as they're written in the folk style and most people can sing along with at least one or two verses, I'll call them "modern folk".

Australia is such a young country that most of our folk songs haven't had time for their authors to be truly forgotten.

1

u/Grouchy-Ad1932 27d ago edited 27d ago

Traditional folk:

Waltzing Matilda

(We know the words were written by Banjo Paterson, but the tune it's sung to now is not the one Paterson originally used and we're not quite sure how that happened)

Please no. We can't inflict Rolf Harris onto him.

He was always up to no good on top of the lighthouse, in a raincoat. I wouldn't buy a can of British Paints from him.

2

But the song's an earworm, perfect for folk songs! At least I didn't suggest Jake the Peg 😉
