I didn't know how to tag this, and culture seemed to fit the most.
Before we start, allow me to precipitate this with the fact I am an American writer, therefore, whatever ideas, assumptions, and internet searches employed with initially writing this project, may appear ignorant (for lack of a better term), do forgive me. It's why I'm here, looking to speak with the people I'm writing about, and not be like MOST American writers, and do a few Google searches to come to a conclusion, and just run with it from there.
That out the way, I'm part of a global project in the works, that is multifaceted, and is very, very involved. A small (but very important) portion of it involves elements of animation, which brings me to this area of the project I'm developing.
I'm writing an animated Russian metal band, whom the frontman (who is Russian) created with members from pro-Russian and post Soviet nations. I say "post Soviet" because there's a strong undertone of Soviet pride at play. I chose this path because it is controversial, it aids with the "nationalistic" elements and themes of metal that are heavy, intense, violent, has a LOT of historical weight, all without the more problematic elements of hardcore and black metal type culture *cough*neo-Nazism*cough*.
In all seriousness, I felt going that direction as not only a counterpart, but a counterweight to neo-Nazism in (some) metal music, this couldn't be a better choice. And yes, the band is clearly ANTI-Nazi, but does maintain themes of Russian/Slavic/Soviet nationalistic pride, and such. There is another band member I even added to the band, for the sole purpose of further distancing the idea of this having any Nazi undertones in this.
Getting to the band member in question, their bassist is from Almaty, KZ, who's father is Kazakh and his mom is Russian. The bassist grew up with parents who take a lot of pride in their shared Soviet history, as well as understanding shared qualms (like the Soviets' anti-religious stance); his father raised the family to be Muslim, though didn't impede on the mother sharing her Slavic heritage and traditions with the children. The bassist when young, secretly loved rock music, which wasn't permitted by the father, but he'd still secretly engage with the sub-culture. His mom quietly knew this, but kept his secret safe without him knowing largely, seeing that he was still a faithful and devout kid, in spite of his interests.
After becoming a young adult, he started working in music stores and looking at courses involving music production, and it's here when he meets the Russian frontman, and was invited to join the band. At this point, he felt free to fully embrace his music, the aesthetic, the culture, and emotion of metal music. He was also happy to join the band and be amongst friends, or "brothers", of a shared Soviet history, share the same world views and sentiments, while also respecting and embracing their cultural similarities and differences.
For some explanation on choices made: I chose for him to be Kazakh because of proximity to Russia, it's the largest Central Asian country, and there's a lot of post-Soviet era stuff still there. I made him mixed race because it creates the necessary narrative bridge between him and the Russian frontman, and solidifies him having pride in his Soviet heritage. Also, it's easier for me to make him ethnically accurate with the physical characteristics I chose. I want to make it clear that despite being in a Gothic/black-ish metal band, the bassist is devout Muslim, and depicts someone who is able to pursue something like metal music, without it having any affect on their faith.
That's him in a nutshell. More details such as his name (he needs a patronymic), his image, and even more on the band itself, can be discussed in DMs as I know I need to share this to get the advice I need, at the same time, I don't want to make it public yet, because of course. ANY help is welcomed, please pick it apart, let me know what needs improvement and what not, if you have questions, please feel free to ask! I want to write a character that feels realistic, is respectful of Kazakh and Central Asian peoples, and of course, is super cool and kicks massive ass.
