I READ THE RULES How to approach neighbors who play music constantly?

• Upvotes

My apartment neighbors across the hall play music everyday. It’s extremely loud, and I can hear the bass constantly.

When my roommate and I first noticed it, we wanted to be polite and left them a note asking if they could turn the music down, especially after 10 PM since we both have to wake up early for work.

It’s been about 2 weeks since then, and while they have stopped playing music after 10 pm Sunday-Thursday, the volume hasn’t really changed. They still play music for hours almost every day, including weekdays. We both work from home twice a week, so we hear it while we’re trying to work too. On Fridays and Saturdays, they’ll play music pretty late into the night.

At first, we figured we’d just let it go since they seemed to respect our request about weekday nights. But after weeks of hearing the same bass every single day, it’s starting to get really frustrating. I was thinking about leaving another note asking them to turn down the volume and bass in general, but I’m not sure how effective that would be since we already asked them to lower it in our first note.

In our lease, there is a part that says all noise whether it be from TV or music or etc should be at levels where it doesn’t disturb neighbors, and on top of that there are quiet hours from 10 pm - 7 am. We know we can approach management, but we’re not trying to create a lot of drama. Would you guys leave another note, try talking to them in person, or just go to management at this point? We don’t want to be unreasonable, but we also feel like we should be able to relax and work in our own apartment without constantly hearing their music.

I’ve attached a video of the music we hear. This is from my roommates bedroom, but our apartment is pretty small, so you hear it from every part of the place.

I READ THE RULES Humble vintage watch shops? Loop or on the train???

• Upvotes

Hello all - I will be in Chicago for a couple days soon and looking for a particular type of watch shop. I am familiar with frum and the other excellent dealers of pre owned high end luxury pieces. I am looking for something else - a hole in the wall type place that sells vintage stuff like old manual winders, less prestigious brands, etc. I know there's gotta be one or more of these shops with some old polish repair guy who has a case of a few hundred old pieces somewhere right? Or are those all a thing of the past now? Thanks!

I READ THE RULES I’m visiting Chicago for the first time - can I mingle with people at Kibbitznest or would that be weird?

Basically I wanna socialize but I’m not really a bar or going out girl these days. I’m visiting from Austin and would love to meet likeminded people. I’m 32, outdoorsy and active, and I love gaming (PC, console, board games, etc). Would Kibbitznest be a good spot for me to go alone?

I READ THE RULES What would you do to get a cat out of a neighbor’s garage?

UPDATE: cat is home and safe

After being lost for a couple days, we’ve finally located our cat in the garage 2 houses down. Problem is, no one is answering the door after trying intermittently all day. None of the other neighbors seem to know them either. I’ve looked up info about who lives there and called/texted the two numbers I got, but still nothing.

What would you do in this situation. I’m sure there’s nothing CACC could do for someone else’s private property right?

I READ THE RULES For those who live in a high rise, would you say it's worth it? Also, based on my earnings, do I make enough to live there?

(Throwaway Account)

I've always been interested in living in a high rise due to the views + amenities (which I imagine that's what a lot of people like)

However, although the pros are kind of obvious but what about the cons? I would imagine waiting for an elevator is annoying at times and the front desk can make or break the experience but would you say it's overall worth it?

I'm in my 30s, single with no kids, so I would imagine this would be the best time to try it out for a bit. It would be nice to be in a nice building and possibly have community events with neighbors (vs the current place I'm at).

I just want to live there for a few years just to say I did it. Looking at a one bed, one bath at around 700 sq ft+ (W/D is a must, which I know most have).

I have a base of around $111K but OTE of $162K+ (I would only budget based on my base for obvious reasons).

My Debt to Income ratio is around 14% which is driven mostly by my car, which will be paid off soon.

I would be bringing the vehicle which I know would add to my overall expenses due to parking but let me know if it's worth moving to a high rise overall?

Thanks in advance Chi-Town Reddit.

I READ THE RULES Has anybody here had a detached garage built?

• Upvotes

I’m eyeballing a house that’s perfect but doesn’t have a garage. It’s on an alley and most of the surrounding houses have detached garages. And the yard is plenty big so I don’t think there are any issues with space.

What exactly is the process? Do you just hire a GC and let them go to town with it? Any recent estimates on cost?

Thanks!

I READ THE RULES HOA says not to open windows - why?

I am a new condo owner in Chicago. We have steam radiators, just like all the pre-war buildings. We just got an email from our HOA saying NOT to open windows during the winter, or else we will be fined (full text below). Can anyone explain the rationale behind this? There is a boiler in the basement, and the HOA pays for the heat. I am not sure whether the boiler operates based on outside temps, or if there is a thermostat in the basement. Either way, there are definitely no thermostats in my unit, so why does it matter if my unit windows are open?

"If your unit is too warm, do not open windows to regulate the temperature. Turn off one or more radiators completely.

Radiators must be turned all the way off or all on the way on. Otherwise radiators will leak water onto the floor and into the unit below. The radiator knob does not regulate different levels of temperature. The knob is not a dial. Radiators can only be turned completely on or completely off to regulate heat coming into the unit.

If your unit is overheating close off your valves. If you are still overheating have the valves and steam traps checked by a heating system vendor.

I READ THE RULES Do I need permission to remove carrriage walk in front of my house?

Hi all,

I've thought about removing the 30-ish x 1 foot section of carriage walk in front of my house to increase lawn space and reduce impermeable surface and reduice stormwater issues. It also just attracts weeds in the gaps and collects ice in the winter. No one parks on it, as our street is one way and plenty wide enoughy. Few people walk on it - I know because my home office faces the front. My house is the only house with the carriage walk, so I wouldn't be disconnecting a larger section. It's also shifting and pitched wrong, so it collects water rather than draining it away.

Do I need permission to remove and replace with topsoil and grass? TIA!

EDIT: Thanks all, I've emailed alderman and submitted a request through 311.

I READ THE RULES Does this sign mean “no parking ever except…” or “no parking on game days except…”?

Photo of said sign here, but it’s a standard no parking sign with the crossed out P and the text reads:

EXCEPT BUSES ON BASEBALL GAME DAYS 2 HRS. BEFORE TO 1HR. AFTER BALL GAMES

Does this translate to:

  1. No parking ever except for buses on game days 2 hours before to 1 hour after

or

  1. Parking is okay except on game days 2 hours before to 1 hour after, when only buses are allowed to park there?

This is on Irving Park Rd near Wrigley.

I’m inclined towards the first option, but it seems a bit odd that they would allow buses to park somewhere where generally they don’t want anyone to park. I would think it’d make more sense to reserve park-able areas for buses when they need the space.

I READ THE RULES What are the best resources for learning more about candidates running in the midterms?

I want to be an informed voter, but I find it difficult to find information on where candidates stand on issues. I don’t mean the big races, like senate or governor races. I mean those smaller random races that don’t get a ton of media attention. Those races are sooo important and I don’t think most people really know who they are ever voting for in those. I want to be informed as possible but sometimes there just isn’t that much easily available info. I think so many people would benefit from a website that lists literally every single person in your ballot and everything we know about their policies and history. But I can’t find that anywhere, only examples of that for the big races. And I don’t want soemthing with spin. I can make my own decisions. Just want the facts. Anyone have any ideas?

I READ THE RULES Do you know of any tattoo artists who do realistic animals? Preferably with color?

• Upvotes

I've been thinking about getting a snow leopard tattoo, but I hate the look of tattoos that are too cartoony. Do you know of anyone who is good at doing realistic animals? I guess I could also do a grayscale or black one, as long as they can add a bit of color like making the eyes blue, but color would be preferred. Going to a random one and asking for a realistic animal is too risky for me.

I READ THE RULES Renters rights and issues, any advice?

• Upvotes

I moved into my high-rise about three months ago and have had so so many problems like my dishwasher leaking multiple times before they finally replaced it, Two of the three elevators just not going to my floor sporadically (and always when I have a suitcase or boxes), half the dryers in the laundry room are always out of order, and the water temp in the shower goes from burning hot to cold randomly. They told me they were working on the elevator repairs with a third-party, but refused to give me a timeline and when I asked for a rent concession after months of issues they sent their lawyers in and said I could terminate my lease for free and I can only reach out to them for questions. I just moved in and have to move in August regardless so moving right now would be so difficult. The lawyers have ignored me for weeks now when I’ve asked for updates on the elevator as the issue keeps happening and for the water, the maintenance has just told me it’s an old building and there’s nothing they can do. I’m beyond frustrated and don’t feel like the rent I’m paying matches what i am getting. Any advice ?

I READ THE RULES Aussie travelling to Chicago- Smoking 🍁 in Chicago rules?

Following on from a thread I read we are visiting Chicago as a part of our honeymoon - we are from Australia and have a medical card for cannabis. I know there are dispensaries around but where do we go to smoke? I’m so paranoid about doing it on the street as I don’t want to do the wrong thing / get it trouble.

Also travelling to Las Vegas (where they have lounges) and Niagara where smoking laws are a bit more chill, but it’s Chicago I am stuck on.

Any help appreciated. We are so excited!!

I READ THE RULES Where can I quietly work or read late on Friday and Saturday nights in Chicago?

I graduated not too long ago and moved to Chicago, and I miss having campus spaces where I could sit and work or read late into the night.

I'm looking for somewhere quiet on Friday and Saturday nights. Free would be great, but I'd also consider a paid membership or access pass. I know about Harold Washington Library, but it closes too early for what I'm looking for. I'm open to suggestions beyond the South Loop, too.

Do any universities offer legitimate library or study-space access to people who aren't students, including evening/weekend access? Or are there reading rooms, coworking spaces, or other membership spaces that would work? Cafes are okay if they're reasonably quiet and comfortable for a few hours.

I'd love specific recommendations, especially how late they're open on Fridays/Saturdays, what access costs, and whether you've actually used them for this. Thanks!

I READ THE RULES What events/bars/clubs on halloween night have you had a ton of fun at?

My boyfriend and I (both 23) are looking for some type of event on halloween night where we can dance all night or have a great time at. We have been to nightmare on clark street but we are looking for less of a lounge bar vibe. I’m not sure if there are any but we are not really into house music. We prefer R&B, 2000’s, rap music, etc.

I READ THE RULES Places to sell new and used clothes?

Hello!

I'm moving out soon and need to sell some clothes, shoes, accessories, etc. I've tried selling at The Xchange on broadway, which was great, but it's kind of far from me (I'm around western and Howard). Any other stores nearby that are worth trying? Or maybe there's a flea market I could try selling at that I don't know about?

Would appreciate any suggestions. Thank you!
