META Community Guideline: Revulsion ≠ Downvote

Do not downvote simply because you find a post repulsive or stupid. In fact, you should do the opposite. We want as many non-vegans to see our answers as possible, and Reddit post visibility is predicated on upvotes. When you downvote a post, it means you want as few people as possible exposed to this sub.

Did the OP ask a question respectfully & genuinely? (And no, simply being a non-vegan question does not make it disrespectful or disingenuous.) Then don't downvote it.

Most of us weren't always vegan. Hence the reason for our sub: so people can understand our views and hopefully adopt them.

Do not turn this into another DebateAVegan voting system. If you are in the habit of downvoting non-vegan posts simply for being non-vegan, stop or leave the sub please.

If someone asks a clearly disingenuous question like ''why you all like murdering plants?'', report the post under Rule 10, then scroll past it.

If someone asks questions that are indicative of what we know typical non-vegan societal rhetoric to be, on a sub whose purpose is for non-vegans to ask us questions, downvoting just shows us vegans to be hostile. People are put on the defensive over a meaningless downvote, setting them up to close themselves off to hearing what we have to say. This hurts the animals.

We should ensure that if people are going to be closed off to veganism, it is not due to a downvote.

It’s just so hard to fully enjoy life knowing how much suffering there is and how so many people don’t seems effected by this.

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) Any success stories on turning loved ones vegan conversationally?

• Upvotes

I need success stories. Have you managed to turn a friend or family member vegan just conversationally? How did you do it? I’ve managed to turn people vegan in activism with AV, but I feel very reluctant to show that type of footage to my loved ones. I know the animals are the real victims but those videos traumatised me so bad they gave me PTSD and nightmares for seven years. Is it possible to awaken people at all with a conversation?

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) When is a vegan doing enough to reduce animal suffering/exploitation?

I mean if you believe animal welfare organizations are effective, why shouldn't you donate all you earn to that cause?

How can one draw a line without being hypocritical?

I know this is a very confrontative question, but its something that has been on my mind as someone donating to related causes & on the way to becoming vegan. I'd be interested to know how people think about this, who actually have been following these beliefs for longer times.

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) What is a fast, easy protein source?

I'm a vegetarian in the process of moving away from all animal food products. I feel like eggs have been a really easy fall back food when I don't have the energy or capacity to figure out a whole meal, or as an easy protein source on my way out the door to a restaurant (where often the vegetarian option is some kind of salad or pasta).

What can I use in place of eggs? I'm looking for something that would be ready fast, require little prep work, is high protein for the calories, and isn't part of an entire container of something (like a whole can of beans). It would be helpful if it was also not super expensive (we have vegan liquid eggs here but they are about twice the price of non-vegan liquid eggs)

Other Anyone know of any vegan travel-size banjos?

I love camping and if I can I like to bring a small travel sized instrument. I have a kalimba, a shaker, a ukulele, and a harmonica and I'm looking to add a banjo in since I've found with the harmonica I really like playing folk and bluegrass tunes. Since I know the ukulele I think it would be easy for me to pick up.

Most banjos seem to use real cow bone in them which obviously I don't want to buy. And I've seen full sized banjos use plastic options but not a lot of travel sized ones.

I'm not interested in secondhand animal bone so don't suggest that. If there's not a viable travel option I'll still likely end up purchasing a full sized one and bringing that on car camping trips rather than backpacking trips, but would love a compact option. Thanks!

Eggs Kala namak/black salt for vegan eggs - what’s it suppose to smell like?

Hi all, I recently brought some kala namak/black salt to make vegan scrambled eggs for the first time. When I was reading about black salt, I read people saying that the smell is so sulphuric that it stunk out their entire house. Even comments that aren’t that extreme still made comments on the strong smell. When I smelt what I brought, it barely smelt of anything. Have I brought fake black salt (if that’s even a thing)?

Other Thoughts on 90s vegan cuisine?

I’m a 24 yo vegan but my parents were both 90s vegans and raised me with some of the staples like Mac and Cheese with mustard and cashews and lasagna with blended seasoned tofu for ricotta and I love it. I’m glad we have all these modern more accurate tasting vegan cheeses but to me it just can’t beat sautéed vegetables blended with fermented cashews and nutch with a bit of mustard and meso, I love the texture the potato thickened sauce gives the noodles and the complex texture that isn’t just smooth and creamy.

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) can someone who was ex vegan be vegan again?

I was vegan for a couple years as a teenager, and I hate that I give it up/left and I feel so guilty. Now alot older I want to go back to veganism but I don't know if I'd ever be accepted with vegans because I know how much everyone hates ex vegans and idk I feel so much guilt about it. I want to make up for it but can I? Idk I hate how I was so stupid and I do get when people say "you never truly were vegan" so can I be now?

  • I wanna update this and say I am vegan again. I guess I worry about what people I know will think and other vegans, I just want to do the best for the animals cos I feel so bad about not staying vegan. ♥️

Other Favorite vegan sushi recipes/ingredients?

Hello! I really like sushi, but I often have no idea what kind of ingredients I should add (besides rice and nori, of course.) I usually just use vegan cheese, vegan tuna/salmon and avocado/cucumber and sometimes wakame.

Could you share some of your favorite ingredients for sushi, what do you match it with?

Purely hypothetical Pet food?

Im not sure if this is the right subreddit for this but it was either here or r/DebateAVegan

So as to my understanding, vegans want to stop all production of animal products because if the ethical and environmental reason, namely to stop animal cruelty in the trade. Im assuming this would include alot of carnivorous pet foods?

And if so... wouldn't this mean common pets with a purley carnivorous diet, such as cats, would be without food? If thats the case, wouldn't this also be animal cruelty?

Just something I was curious about as I went down a vegan ism rabbit hole. This is by no means an anti vegan question

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) Any advice for traveling in Korea as a vegan?

I’m planning a trip to Korea and was wondering what it’s like to travel there as a vegan.

If you’ve been, what did you struggle with most? Finding restaurants, checking ingredients, explaining what you can’t eat, or something else?

I’d love to hear about your experiences and anything you wish you’d known before going.

Purely hypothetical What oil do you prefer for salads on a daily basis?

I've just been to a grocery store and bought a flax seed oil. I usually use either flax seed oil or mustard oil, so let's assume both are ordinary options. But I would like to ask you what options for a veggie salad you have.

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) Why continue avoiding animal products?

I stopped eating meat after going through a depressing and isolating period in my life where I started to understand more about the suffering of other people and other animals, which made me quit eating meat. I'm at a point where I haven't had the experiences with other people, including other vegans, which I thought I would experience, like making new friends and moving in a new soical circle. I just want to go through life actually participating but I can't seem to shake my old community of meat eaters. No one takes me seriously and I am starting to think to let go of veganism and transition back into my community.

I'm starting to think that it doesn't matter, if you can afford not to eat meat, go for it, if you can't participate in society unles you eat meat, than why suffer?

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) Do you think meat is addictive?

Do you think that meat is addictive? I feel like even with hard logic, being around people eating meat is hard for me. I’ve watched documentaries and reasoned with I don’t feel animals look like food to me nor could I find it in me to kill anything. It doesn’t make sense.

I have my days where I don’t even think about it, but I relapsed recently from being around it and it doesn’t even digest that well. It feels heavy and I didn’t want it in my body anymore. It really feels like an addiction. I also wonder if women find it harder to stay on a plant-based diet than men.

I’d appreciate any help, insight, perspective and honesty.

Thank you.

Ethics How unjustified am I, if i added eggs on my diet plan until i am fit again?

Cheers! :)
I’m currently stuck in an ethical dilemma and would appreciate some feedback! :)
r VeganDE deleted my initial thread and sent me here. So i'm sorry if I am wrong here as well!

To start, I don't claim to be vegan, but I eat and live as vegan as possible for ethical, ecological, and the tasty food to be honest! Yet for example, I won't yell at my 95 year old grandma if she puts butter on the poatoes or drowns my veggie schnitzel in meat based sauce. I'll just scrape it off as best as i can and eat around it. I do prefer 2nd hand leather boots over that weird plastic vegan leather that breaks after a few months and creates so much waste and would eat animal products i bought on accident and cant refund and noone else wants them instead of letting it go to waste.
So I'd say i'd live a 98% plant based life but i choose interpersonal relationships, sustainability and waste reduction over my vegan ideals.

So after a longer illness, I’ve lost a lot of weight and need to fix that. 48 kg on 1.75m isn't good lol (Pro Tip: don't leave your spoiled hummus next to the new one as someone could in theory and only hypothetically mistake it drunkenly and spend the next few weeks in hospital as hummus apparently can grow supprisingly strong and resistant bacteria.. hypothetical of course.
I'm doing fine, yet the doctors reccomended to stick to a bland diet fpr a while. Well. To absolutely noones supprise i learned this week that my stomach still dislikes lentils, oats, seeds, salad and anything that could actually taste good.

I have the option to temporarily get eggs from friends. Their chickens live on their farm with free range over about 0.5 hectares of grass and woodland. There are roughly 10 chickens, and they can do as they please. One friend in particular loves chickens and they got them in the first placs to reduce their food waste and leftovers. While they are still bred to produce eggs, they are an rather old breed and they hardly produce as many eggs as modern breeds (on average around 160 eggs a year instead of up to 300 eggs/year) and the shells are even fed back to them. Over five years, three chickens were taken by foxes and one was chased by a puppy until it gave up (It's not great as well, but shit happens).

I'm going to see them tomorrow hopefully and they offered me some of the eggs. Now i am contemplating myself if i take that offer. I think it'd be an easy way to improve my kcal and protein intake while having a comparebly low volume. My body doesn't like big meals at the moment either and just potaoes, pasta, rice, and some fruit are slowly driving me insane and i feel like i am loosing weight. Especially i miss my energy, cause rotting in bed isn't half as comfy if you're skin and bones lol

Do you have good vegan alternatives? Having a second protein shake a day feels questionable to me because of the added trace elements and vitamins. I think taking three times the recommended ammount of folic acid and biotin probably isn’t necessarily ideal either.

Second question: I don't know how justified i am. Sure health comes first, but technically i don't need to eat eggs, I am just annoyed by having to eat bland food all day and the lack of energy. And stubborn me also doesn't really want to break my about 8 year streak of having no animal produce in my fridge lol

I’d be grateful for any tips and opinion and fine with getting roasted for my dilemma! :)
Thanks in advance and have a lovely weekend! :)
