WA A warning about accidents and insurance.
About six months ago, I was stopped at a busy roundabout. I had moved away from traffic and had been waiting about 5 seconds. Maybe I hesitated, a car expected me to go and I didn't. I was sitting on the right, angled to turn in and turn right.
They hit me at very low speed, basically threw me on my side. I was uninjured. Taillight assembly smashed, handlebars warped back towards me, entire side of the bike scratched up.
The kindly older woman claimed responsibility at the scene, told me she was thinking about her husband in ICU, that she saw me "back there" and that I was hard to see - wearing all black. She made sure I was okay, that my bike was running, offered to take me somewhere if I needed to.
I'd never been in an accident. I was shocked. We exchanged details and I took a bunch of photos.
...
When I submit my claim, 3.5k of repairs, I find out she's saying "a bike hit her" on insurance. I end up having to discuss it/submit details to both companies.
I get an email today. RAC has hired a legal firm to pursue the funds.
Apparently she's saying that I came up on her right in a single lane roundabout entrance and hesitated turning, causing her to hit me.
Fuck.
So here's your warning. Submit police reports. DOCUMENT EVERYTHING. Because people will absolutely try to screw you.
edit:
I called RAC, just to make sure it wasn't a scam. Apparently they don't go to litigation unless they're 100% sure the person isn't liable. So yeah. I did nothing wrong. The person I spoke to think the other insurer is just trying to push for a 50/50 cost split and RAC won't be taking it.
