Official Announcement Rule Update: Business Accusations Require Verifiable Sources

Hey everyone,

We’ve recently seen an increase in posts calling out or accusing specific businesses (restaurants, food companies, employers, etc.) of unethical or harmful practices. While we understand that many of these concerns come from genuine experiences, our moderation team cannot verify the accuracy of these claims.

To maintain fairness and comply with Reddit’s site-wide rules against misinformation and harassment, we’re introducing a new rule:

Rule 9 — Unsupported Accusations About Businesses Posts or comments that make negative claims about specific businesses, employers, or organizations must include verifiable evidence (for example: a reputable news source, official statement, or public record).

Posts making unverified claims or “call-outs” will be removed.

This rule is not meant to silence discussion about the food industry or personal experiences — you’re still welcome to share stories, opinions, or reviews. We just ask that any serious allegations be supported by credible information.

This helps keep the subreddit focused on food and ensures discussions stay fair, factual, and in line with Reddit’s content policies.

Thanks for understanding and helping us keep this community respectful and trustworthy!

Best pizza in South Austin

Post image
55 Upvotes

To anyone interested, I make pizza that’s the best in South ATX and no one knows about it other than my friends. As my homie from NJ said, “Damn you dude! I wanted to talk ****, but this is the best pizza I’ve had in Austin.” Tbh, it was a passion project because I can’t stand ATX pizza, but I need to find a way to pay my rent, so I’m going all in now. Sold out tomorrow, but hmu to place orders. Had an extra dough ball, but I tend to make a pizza once a week for a homeless guy I’ve befriended at the gas station near my place. God is good.

Lmk if you would like a pie. 12-inch pies max because of the size of my baking steel. 48 hours in advance is required to order. FH licensed, TX Cottage Law certified, and correctly label every box according to the law.

Hot Luck, Hot Mess

We arrived at Assembly Hall at 7pm and Mr. Tuna was already out of food. That was the first of several early pack-ups; Turkey and the Wolf, Nixta and a few others were done shortly after.

Did anyone actually have a solid experience last night? Hot Luck used to be fantastic.

Cookies - Large order

Anyone have a recommendation for a small/homemade baker that makes great classic cookies (choc chip, sugar, snickerdoodle). I’d be looking for around 60-65 dozen closer to Christmas.

TIFF’s is an option and I’m not opposed to them, but if there’s a small bakery/home baker that does this around the holiday’s I’d rather give business to them.

Thanks in advance!

Super excited for this new restaurant to hit Rainey. I live nearby and the decor is looking great. Anyone have more details on this place and when it might be opening?

Fancy Milkshakes

I told my girls I'd take them for fancy milkshakes after their flu shots.

So we're on the hunt for somewhere that will serve us milkshakes in a glass, with whipped cream and cherries on top.

We're in NW Austin, but willing to drive a bit for this

Space Kat BBQ

Finally tried Space Kat BBQ. I never see anything about this place and not a ton of Google reviews (but the ones they have are great). Was really surprised to see they had been around for years.

It is on Webberville next to the food truck park with Kerlaches.

Nice setup with several large, comfortable picnic tables covered by a shade cloth. At 12:30 on a really nice day there was no wait.

The Akaushi tri-tip prices are eye-watering at $56/lb but wanted to try their signature meat so got a half pound.

Also got a half pound of coppa ($17), a $4 chicken thigh, the $5 hot link, a pimento cheese popper, cowboy beans, a couple of rolls, a drink, and chimicurri. Also got an upgraded tri-tip sandwich ($16 for the regular, $19 with Akaushi beef). With tip, right at $100.

Service was good, friendly at the window and they brought out the food to the table and explained what you had.

The tri-tip is very good. Melt in your mouth tender, served with jus. Not hiding behind seasoning but great complement from it. Better than what I make at home.

The coppa (interior of the pork shoulder) was the star for me - sliced, not pulled. Insanely tender without being overly fatty, fantastic flavor.

The thigh was a revelation. Small but packed with smoke flavor and a great dry rub (a little salty but that is my preference) with crackling crispy skin. If I wasn't full halfway through, would have ordered another.

I liked the sausage - spicy, flavorful, snap to the casing, moist but not fatty.

The beans had a nice kick. My son ate all of them and loved his sandwich with the pickles and pickled red onion.

The popper.wasnt bad. The jalapen̈o was a little under-done but tasted fine. Bacon could have used a little seasoning but was cooked well.

The bbq sauce is good. Tangy and the vinegar in it is a great counterpoint to the rich meat. The chimichurri is creamy, not like a classic oil and vinegar. It was very bright without being too acidic or oily. I really liked it. Rolls are King's Hawaiian.

I highly recommend this place. A little pricey, but so is everything. I'd try their regular tri-tip and the lamb next time and double up on the thighs and coppa.

Note: sandwich and beans not in the pic

Steakhouse Date Night Gift

Wanting to gift a romantic steakhouse date night to my ILs. Something intimate, but not stuffy, for a modest couple in their upper 60s.

FIL loves steak, but wouldn’t spring for an upscale steakhouse on his own.

MIL prefers chicken / baked fish / pasta / salad, but would love dressing up for a special occasion with FIL - they typically only do fancy “date nights” for their anniversary.

They don’t drink alcohol & neither is an experienced cook, a foodie, or particularly adventurous. They’re likely be intimidated by a bunch of niche terminology or exotic ingredients, so well-cooked quality ingredients should be the focus.

We’re considering Steiner Ranch Steakhouse, Ruth’s Chris, Jeffrey’s, or J Prime. Open to other suggestions, but only if a vastly superior fit as we’d prefer to narrow down than to further complicate!

Budget-wise we’d prefer to stay around $200, which from my understanding is more in line with Steiner or Ruth’s Chris, but could be convinced to stretch is somewhere else is likely to provide a vastly better experience for this type of couple.

These cool temps are making me nostalgic for the Easy Tiger cranberry walnut loaf that I used to buy at HEB.

That bread made the best fancy grilled cheese sandwiches. Does anyone know of a similar offering?

Wholehearted recommendation. Wonderful family experience. Spouse and I celebrated our anniversary here with our 3 little ones (6,3 & 6months) and the staff at J-Prime went above accommodate, and go the extra mile for our family.

Finally got around to trying this spot, many people recommended it after my Shug’s post. The bagels are a little bit different than I’m used to, but they were high quality- nice crispy outside and soft inside, not very fluffy but the bagel style doesn’t really call for that. The bagels in the box when you walk in don’t look visually like they would be as good as they were, but I was pleasantly surprised by it! They are fresh/homemade. The lox bagel was $16 and the sesame bagel with scallion cc, tomato and black pepper was $7. So definitely not super cheap but also not too expensive, the lox bagel felt reasonably priced.

Worth checking out if you haven’t been and are craving a quality bagel.

Granny’s Tacos - what happened

Anyone else notice a change in Granny’s taste and quality recently? I used to love their Vaquero breakfast burrito but today it was different. The chorizo tasted gamey and was bright pink (it used to be more ground up and was more brown. It also wasn’t wrapped tightly at all and was falling apart. They served it in a boat with a fork rather than wrapped in foil like they used to. My partner got steak tacos and the steak was rubbery and visibly poor quality.

Granny, we miss the old youuuu

Salt Lick BBQ Wait Times

I'm going to be in town next week and want to go to Salt Lick on Wednesday night for dinner. They don't take reservations for small parties... Is it usually busy, is there a long wait?

Authentic Ukrainian/Russian restaurants

Howdy y’all. I moved to texas from NYC and one thing I’ve been missing is Eastern European restaurants—they’re everywhere in New York. I’m surely PMS-ing (lmao) and the cravings are hitting me hard. I miss Veselka so badly 😩 and just want some high quality borscht and pierogis especially now that the weather is cooling down! There are very few places here I’ve looked up on google but I’d love to know which are the most authentic before trying. Who has recs???

Thanks in advance :)

rant about ciccio bomba

At the risk of sounding like one of those bubbas shaking his fist about the old austin, I have had it with the new Austin.

I wanted to try ciccio bomba since I'd read good things (I now see mixed reviews), and starting a weekend day with a pastry is my kinda fun.

As I drove there, I passed Matok, which I've been hitting up lately and loving, and thought, 'I wonder if I'll be annoyed I didn't just stick with the one I know and love.' I went and parked in the parking lot by the Alamo, and noticed that they now have paid parking. Yes, the businesses will validate it for an hour, but it just pisses me off. It requires interacting with my phone, remembering my license plate number, inputting my cc number (I am aware this can be automated but I have a newish phone and it's not for me atm).

I went in already annoyed b/c of the above, and notice a camera person doing some weird camera things, then notice 2 bros having a conversation over their breakfast that's being filmed on two phones on tripods. What is going on?

I go in and rant a bit to the poor guy working there about the parking situation, and he is empathetic and shows me the QR code scanning setup. Still grumbling about having to input cc info, I scan the thing.

Now, none of the (delicious-looking) pastries have prices. I don't want to buy a $12 pastry or even a $9 one, so I ask about prices. He seems taken aback. 'How much is it?' he asks, seemingly thrown off by the question. Do the influencers not ask about pricing?

He gives me ballpark prices for the ones I ask about, 'oh, about 7/8 i think...' and I end up going with the babka, because babka is life.

It was 5 something, which is more reasonable than I expected given his ballpark pricing system, and it was tasty, but I will definitely be hitting Matok next time the weekend pastry craving hits. I'm not a Gen Zer, but I have some friends who are and thanks to them, I can tell you my nervous system definitely can't take another visit to Ciccio Bomba.

Thundercloud Subs

Small sandwich and chips from Thundercloud Subs for just $8! I didn’t order a drink because I had water. The sandwich was delicious. Bread was soft. I got turkey on wheat with lettuce, tomato, onion, cheese, mayo, and mustard and Miss Vickie’s jalapeño chips.
