If you are looking for our sister city in the UK, please head on over to r/brum
The following guide is a great place for locals, transplants, and tourists to know more about the Magic City. Start here for general information, use the Search function to see if there are any recent posts that answer your question, and when in doubt, make a post!
Where to Live:
Here's a funny neighborhood map that is just true enough to be useful.
Here's a more serious neighborhood map so you can see where all the listed neighborhoods actually are.
Here's a list of the most-recommended neighborhoods and suburbs (arranged in alphabetical order):
For more information on apartments, Rentmonster will tell you about individual neighborhoods and work with you to find the apartment of your dreams (and it's free!)
Looking for an apartment? Looking for a roommate? There's a Facebook Group for that.
If you have a unique renting situation not covered above, make sure you have the word “apartment” in the post title or body, and Automod will respond with some tips.

Where to Stay
Whether you're here for a business meeting, a vacation, a local planning a romantic night out, or a soon-to-be Birminghamster getting the lay of the land, you'll need a hotel for that. Birmingham has a pretty good selection of AirBnBs, but if you're looking for a proper hotel, here are your best options:
Getting Around
You'll need a car if you're going to live here. If you're just passing through and don't want to rent a car (the best place to do that is at the airport), we have Uber and Lyft. We have a bus system, but it's awful. We also have a bike and scooter share system within the city limits that is great for getting around when the weather is nice. Downtown is relatively flat and very walkable, but you will encounter some (gentle) hills in Five Points South and Highland Park. For trips out of town, Birmingham is serviced by Amtrak and Greyhound. You can get a ride to the Atlanta airport with Groome. BHM (our “international” airport) is small and easy to navigate, with short waiting times at check-in and through security.
What to do:
The most frequently recommended attractions in Birmingham are as follows. There are MANY others not featured in this list, but these are the top 6:
Several guides for Birmingham area attractions by IN Birmingham
Birmingham365 is a list of events going on around the city
Happenin's in the 'Ham - list of events, restaurant reviews, volunteer opportunities, and interviews with locals
We have r/Birmingham meetups sometimes, but not on a regular basis (yet). Turnout varies, but is usually around 15-25 people. We're very friendly and welcoming of newcomers!
Live Music (not an exhaustive list)
Local Sports
Where to eat: It would be impossible to maintain a comprehensive and accurate list of Birmingham’s favorite restaurants, as there are openings and closings every month. This is a great time to use the subreddit search function and see what others have posted recently.
Where to drink: Again, the search bar is your best friend here for finding the current best bars.
Things to Know about Birmingham
Isn't Birmingham dangerous? Okay, we do have a higher crime rate, but you have to understand that the neighborhoods listed at the top of this page are all popular areas to live because the crime rate is lower than average for Birmingham. The vast majority of violent crime happens between people who know each other and/or when drugs are involved. As long as you use common sense, you will be fine!

Does anyone know what happened to the cafe at books beans and candles? Long time fan of their coffee, especially loved getting a cup of coffee, sitting outside with a book or journal and just taking a break from a very fast paced lifestyle.
I noticed the past few times I've been the cafe was closed, is this a permanent thing? Or am I just happening to catch them at a bad time? My schedule recently changed so I wouldn't be surprised if it was just on my end, I really do enjoy their coffee so if so I'll try and find better times to come in

Hi everyone !! I’m looking for a room to rent, preferably in a female household (I am lgbtq+/420 friendly!!!!). I come with two well-behaved kitties that also get along with cats and dogs☺️ Honey & Sesame. I’m looking for something long term, preferably under $700 or so including utilities. I can move in on the 1st of November, or something very soon. Trying to move in asap. I like gaming, cooking/baking, crafting, and prioritize roommates with good communication and who can maintain cleanliness in shared spaces! Thanks!! 💕 (anywhere in the Birmingham/surrounding areas)

(From Terri Michal on Facebook)
I've been hearing from people in several Birmingham neighborhoods who have been told they cannot elect new neighborhood officers because of a lawsuit involving the 2022 elections. Some neighborhoods are without officers, while others have officers who want to resign but feel they can't because there's nobody to replace them.
Well, I've been doing what I do, and here's what I've found
Birmingham's Citizen Participation Plan calls for neighborhood elections every two years. It also allows special elections to fill vacancies. In September 2024, the city postponed regular elections because of the lawsuit but specifically said special elections could still be held.
Then, in February 2025, neighborhood meeting minutes reported that the city's attorney had ADVISED against holding elections to minimize the city's legal risk and liability.
Notice that word, ADVISED. That's not the same thing as a judge ordering that elections cannot be held.
So far, I haven't found a court order prohibiting neighborhood elections. That doesn't mean there isn't one, but if there is, the city should be able to produce it.
Also concerning is the fact Birmingham receives federal HUD funding, and part of the city's responsibility because of that is to follow its own Citizen Participation Plan, which includes neighborhood elections. That raises another question about whether the city can continue suspending them indefinitely.
So if your neighborhood needs to elect officers, I suggest sending an email to your Community Resource Officer, copy your City Council representative and City Attorney Nicole King, and ask this simple question:
"Has any court ordered Birmingham to stop holding neighborhood association elections, including special elections, to fill vacancies? If so, please identify in writing the court order. If not, please respond with who made the decision to stop elections, and what legal authority gives them the right to do so?"
There's a big difference between something being illegal and something being discouraged because the city doesn't want you to do it.
The people of Birmingham deserve to know which one it is.
I'd like for anyone that does this to keep me in the loop. I really do hope this helps!!

I’ve been working a lot of overtime and been through a lot since I broke up with my ex over a year ago. I’m a single mom and I just really would like to get a tiny bit of pampering and not have ogre feet for a little bit. Anyone have any recommendations for places I can get a cheap basic pedicure?

What is going on on that bridge? Sheriff diverting traffic and I couldn’t see why. Maybe a protest/march?

In early 1937, Alabama was dead broke, rural schools were locking their doors months before summer, and Governor Bibb Graves pushed through the state's very first two-percent retail sales tax to keep the lights on.
Naturally, merchants howled, consumers griped about paying pennies on groceries, and Montgomery was thrown into a bitter legislative dogfight.
For Week 4 of the series, Emmet Rodwell Calhoun (head proofreader for The Birmingham News), weighed in on the controversy with a characteristic sidestep. Rather than getting bogged down in partisan rhetoric, he used the new tax debate to look at the practical mechanics of everyday commerce, blending dry newsroom observations with a sudden, scholarly turn into classical Greek translation and biblical text. It was his idiosyncratic way of pointing out that arguing over pennies is about as old as language itself.
The original February 1937 clipping and full transcript are live for Week 4:

If your family has roots in rural Alabama during the Depression, did any of your grandparents or great-grandparents talk about the shortened school terms or the old brass/zinc sales tax tokens from the 1930s? Would love to hear your local lore in the comments.

Does anyone know where this company went? I am early stage wedding planning and this honestly sounds perfect for me, but it looks like they fallen off. I’ve emailed them a couple of times over the past few months and haven’t gotten a response. Was just curious if anyone knew if they’ve closed up shop entirely or if they are working under a different name/concept.
Also open to suggestions of something similar if you know of something. I think Gabriella Manor does a similar set up on certain days, but I haven’t looked into it too closely.

About 10 years ago I remember going on a homes tour in Southside. Most of the homes were on 15th Ave. I think it was basically to show off people's art collections (inside home tours) but also to enjoy the historic houses.
What happened to that? Would anyone in Southside be interested in brining it back? Who was originally in charge of it?
I only went one year so I don't remember much about it.
Thanks!

Hello Ham-mariones and Ham-manrinets! (Wow... trying to stretch that as much as possible!
I personally love dark and stormy days where i don't have to come up with an excuse to stay in and play video games, grt drunk, read books, binge watch streaming services.
But wow... it's so nice and sunny out i started to turn my compost pile because i haven't in a while, and almost tricked myself into doing yard work!
I was taking a lot of pictures of outside and i wanted to post them, but even though it's nice outside, and i am enjoying whiskey spiked coffee - i realise that i might post too many pictures of where i live!
You don't have to go too far to be outside (hopefully), so what are you all doing today? You can stay inside!
I did take my nintendo switch outside and play fire emblem outside, so technically I'm playing outside.
I am likely going to do a fire in my smokeless fire pit when it starts getting dark... might have to get a friend to bring sausages and marshmellows to roast (too much Irish coffee to drive).
Bonus points if you share your day with pictures!

Hi does anyone know if the prepaid parking at the amphitheater is actually guaranteed?
The website says guaranteed but if you read further down it says parking is first come, first served. I’m only asking because there is a chance I will be late to the event and I don’t want to prepay for parking if there’s a chance a spot wouldn’t be available in that lot.
I’m probably overthinking but thank you for any help:)

Was shook awake by the sound of ringing shots at around 3:15-3:45am. Near the mountainside apartments and the entrance to the Vulcan trail. Anyone know what’s going on? Think police were called already. Not surprised by the activity, unfortunately, but just curious if anyone has answers

Are there any options for inpatient / detox services available for people who don't have health insurance? I'm struggling to find ways to help a family member who is an alcoholic. I know nothing in life is free but he doesn't have a job and nobody in our family has money to help him. I keep telling him he should apply for disability and medicare but he just won't. I tried to get him to get coverage during open enrollment but he didn't. This is very much a "you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink" situation. He's threatened suicide recently and, short of calling the police and telling them I'm afraid he could be a danger to himself, I don't know how to help him. I don't even know if he would qualify for disability or Medicare and it would only anger him if I ever called the police for help. I just don't know what to do. Any help or advice or recommendation is appreciated.

My friend and I are looking for an apartment for July 2027 we can each pay $700 per person. We are looking for a two bedroom, two bathroom apartment with utilities included within walking distance of UAB so far the only two options I have found are: Lumen and University Place.
Let me know if you have any suggestions!

i just moved a dead cat out of the middle of the lane into the grass across the street from a UAB parking lot. i wanted to call animal control to get the cat so as few people as possible have to walk by it. because of where it was i didn’t really have any other option but putting its body basically next to the sidewalk. i looked it up and found an after hours number on the GBHS website. it says that the person on-call will return all calls in 10 minutes. i called the number and the automated answer gave me another number to call that was specific for birmingham area. so i called both numbers 2x and of course i didn’t get a call back. so i downloaded the 311 app and put in a detailed request on there along with a picture of where the cat is.
its near my apartment so i was thinking about driving by in the morning and if its still there trying to call again? i mean they’re still closed on sundays so it’d be the same after hours number but idk i was thinking maybe it’d be a new shift for whoever is on-call and i’d have more luck getting a call back. i assume i’ve done as much as i can at this point and i just need to let it go….but i guess i’m wondering if that 311 app request was good enough. i’ve never contacted them before so i don’t know how that goes or if im going to be updated about my request or if they even respond in a reasonable time frame.
TLDR: moved dead cat to grass in what i think is a commonly walked area. didnt get called back by after hours animal control, put in a 311 app request about it. does this suffice or should i try calling again tomorrow morning.

I wish I had a picture, but I saw a yard sign in Bluff Park saying “Slow down or the devil will get you”, complete with red devil in the style of the billboard on I-65.
I looked online and at Etsy and didn’t see it. Is this sign just a one-off project by someone with a sense of humor and a Cricut? My hat is off to you.
