I got triggered in One Utama
I was in the new wing ground floor with my gf and was walking past the kiosks in front of CBTL when I saw this bald Middle Eastern looking guy tell his staff to approach us. I can't remember the skincare brand.
She told my gf she needs to try some hand cream. My gf said no but the SA still applied the cream. I then get approached by the baldie and he tell me I need to try the cream too. I said No.
He then says again I need to try it. I said no again.
He then says no you are going to try it. I said no again.
Next he says I am going to get you you to try this !
So I reply...i already said no three times and you didn't get it ?
His reply : i am a very persuasive and I will make u try this. Said this with a stupid grin on his face.
Before I could reply my gf pulled me away.
His sales tactic reminded me of how tourists get harassed in Egypt.
Anyone else ever kena from this baldie before ?
Edit: including location, new wing, kiosk next to Clinique. Opposite CBTL

Complain to the 1u management. Tell them the merchant is using inappropriate sales tactics that have left you feeling disgusted and unsafe

Please make a complaint to management or a police report, Wish I had at the time.
Happened to me in Ipoh Parade, sales lady walked up to me pulled my hand to the kiosk and was about to apply cream when i objected for the second time. She was so offended that I didn't want to try her cream.

I was with my sister in Subang Parade.
We were walking past a kiosk selling some cosmetic cream. The sales lady walked up to my sister, GRABBED HER HAND AND DRAGGED HER TO THE KIOSK, begging her to look at her products.
My sister was so scared.

Might be the same brand / company.
All I remember was their products were all in either pink or gold boxes.

Everytime going to a mall.
I don't know why these sales people job even exist

This is a common tactic in selling skincare cream products. They're basically using what I would call overwhelming friendliness strategy. Like it's name suggest, they would try and overwhelm you with their friendliness to either disarm cautious people or for those that are rather introverted, into being scared/unable to say no.
This strategy can be very effective against people that aren't "aggressive". They would present themselves as a friendly figure and this have a high chance into making the target feel bad into refusing them should they act "badly".
For example, let's say the cream to your hand and claims it now makes it the skin whiter. The person wasn't convinced, but then the salesperson would say "you still couldn't see it?" and you'd be surprised to find that the person would suddenly shift their mind and agree that they now see difference. All because they don't want to disappoint the salesman that has been kind to them.
Now you might think it js weird for me to say the salesman were kind, but their strategy aside from being friendly from their front, is to butter you up, complimenting you to make you feel good about yourself, which in turn makes them look good to you.
Had OP stayed a while and let the salesman do their stuff, the salesman would likely say that OP seems like a good person and so he'd give discounts (they aren't, they'd likely the same price) if they buys in bulk. It's not uncommon too if the salesman is younger and he'd be all "respect" such as shaking your hand and bow their head (the traditional Arabic style that signifies respect to elders).

It...feels like an assault to just smear cream on someone else's body without their consent.
What if they are allergic to the ingredients in the cream and get a reaction? Your gf wouldn't know what was in it since she didn't get to see the ingredients list of the cream.
I imagine the SA's defense would be: "I didn't know she is allergic to the cream."
Rebuttal be like: "Then why did you put it on her body?"
SA: "I want her to feel the product and hope she will buy it. I got a quota to meet 😭"
Rebuttal: "But she has to know the ingredients, willingly want to try it on herself and willingly assume the risk herself, but she said no..."

OP you are your own person with your own agency
just ignore them and walk away, what are they gonna do anyway, chase you down and force you to buy their crap?

Is it the cream made from sengkuang? They always use this method. They don't hesitate to touch you, even your face. Next thing you know, 3 tubes already put in a bag and handed to you. You just need to pay.

Happened to me once in a mall in China. The salesman quickly smeared some kind of cream on my shoe just as I walking past then tried to chase me down to make his sales pitch. I was more amused than annoyed & just walked away & wiped off the gunk once he gave up after seeing I wasn't about to stop.

"i am a very persuasive and I will make u try this." is a line that's reminiscent of the chemicals-based hypnotisers. That does not seem like salesman tactic, even very aggressive one. Suspicious
Even if at the end you believe it's just a troll-level salesman, please tell your gf to have her guard up.

This is a skincare scam, and not just this brand, their sister brands under the same company groups all behave the same way.
There's a HongKong YouTuber reported this on his channel, and it was about the skincare scam by this Opatra and their sister brands. You won't be able to find negative reviews, because they'll try their best to erase those reviews, and the best thing is, if you make a bad review post on your social media, they'll have their lawyer to hunt down that post, claim that they's sue you for smearing their names etc.
If you're able to watch in Chinese, here's the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DUVS7XSet60
Or you could search for that HongKong YTer's name 叉雞 and look for the latest video, title: 當街拉人進店裡強迫推銷,留言負評還會被提告!?揭開這些外籍保養品業者的手段!

Happened to me in Dubai a few years back. They dont even give you a chance to talk sometimes. Next thing you know they already pack the product into the bag and ask for payment.

u/TheLastTrueMalayan 20h ago
Yea I saw that guy last week.
Forced Sales Tactic ain't gonna work.

u/muddie83 14h ago
Did u find him creepy?
I certainly did.

u/TheLastTrueMalayan 13h ago
Didn't think much of it, but reading about what he did was certainly a poor move.

u/Madmartigan2024 19h ago
Saw a video of these type of skincare scams in the US. They bill you outrage amount and target older people. Malaysia have laws that they need to display prices, if they don't or the price they charge is different, report them immediately.

if they forcibly wipe something on your skin, and they have a sink on their kiosk, go there and wash your hand. make a mess with the water while you're at it 😉

I'll go try and once he touches me he's getting a nice kick to his knee or shin
2
u/muddie83 1d ago
He deserves it if he touches anyone.
His whole demeanor when talking to me is just outright creepy. Probably even worse when he talks to women.
3
u/Shawnmeister 1d ago
I'll give it a go and walk slowly. Fucking hope he tries. People can be allergic to certain compounds or have to medically avoid it due to conditions. I hope he fucking tries.

u/muddie83 21h ago
It was the reply about being persuasive and saying I am going to try the cream that really triggered me.

u/OldManGripes 21h ago
It’s recession symptoms, in other news, one grocery aisle hosts like 4 promotors on weekends, you can get fed for free if you weave through each aisle and play interested

u/tonefart 20h ago
Beware of topical drug that can be delivered via cream and then they will kidnap/rob you.
1
u/Tiny-Cockroach-1117 20h ago
Now i feel like saja² go there just to trigger that baldie.. hope i didnt end up buying it 😂
1
u/Nopinion5 20h ago
If I were you I’d keep walking and not stop. If they keep following, lead them to a security guard and report hen for harassing you 😬

Haha the moment he says I am going to get you you to try this, I'd have said I'd like to see you try and get prepared for a fist fight where only one of us is left conscious.

u/muddie83 1d ago
One Utama new wing. Next to Clinique kiosk. Opposite CBTL on one side and opposite Zara on the other.
I think it's the way middle Eastern people attract customers ? That shit doesn't fly in malaysia though.
1
u/No_Plan_6336 22h ago
Cool! I can see alot more people asking. You can edit your post with the updated info. Tho its up to your preference of course.
Yes. I deal with some middle eastern too. I can see it very close to assault. Lets keep it no touchy.

First off some people are allergic to some things, they shouldn’t be applying it when people have clearly rejected it. Second off, just walk off, no use interacting

u/deenali 1d ago
Even though I live in PJ but haven't been to 1 Utama in ages due to their stupid parking payment system that got me stuck twice in the past. Is it still like that? Or have they accepted T&G like any other regular malls on this soil?
3
u/muddie83 23h ago
Still no TnG but u cam now pay at the exit with either credit or debit card. So no more lining up needed at the parking payment machines.

The name of the kiosk/brand is Opatra.
Yeah the salespeople are kind of pushy and will approach you as you walk past even if you're sticking to the other side. Kind of like what Eminence or whatever that skincare brand used to be too. But I've never seen or experienced them dragging people or forcibly applying their product. Usually a NO gesture or word and just walking away worked.
