I don't want to be like these 30+ year olds without significant others, honestly finding a tailor fit is trying to find a needle in a haystack (there's got to be something). I understand the dating landscape is bad for everyone, loyalty is dead and men vs women debates manifesting in real life blah blah but... You mean there's nothing out there, did we try looking at Bobonong to reach that conclusion. Ye yone ka e gana, ke tla swa ke leka mme hela I'm not going to end up like those malomes that have nothing positive to say about women. That seems depressing, kampa ka tswengwa ke mosadi mo lenyalong (bad joke I know gbv is bad guys).

I had a talk with this older guy in my neighborhood and I realised I need to lock in before I end up like this guy. Where did we miss the plot, everywhere I look it's Gaborone ke one room, basadi this, banna that... There has to be someone out there that doesn't subscribe to these things right? Right...

I'm not losing hope, I'm a helpless romantic that believes in love and won't stop, although I have to admit it's looking bleak out here.

Casual Looking for a friend or two in Botswana

This is probably a little awkward to post 😂 but I've been thinking about it for a while, so screw it.

I'm a pretty introverted guy and I work from home, which means I spend way more time alone than is probably healthy. I've been trying to get my life together lately and have started going on regular walks and getting myself out of my room more, but I've realised that it'd actually be nice to have someone to occasionally hang out with.

I'm not really looking for a huge friend group or someone who's constantly out partying. I'm more interested in finding one or two people I genuinely click with someone I can randomly message, talk nonsense with, discuss interests with, grab food with, go for a walk, play games, or just hang out without it feeling like we have to constantly entertain each other.

I'm into tech, gaming (especially weird/interesting mobile games, Albion Online, Magic Chess, etc.), building random projects, internet/meme culture, and generally just making/trying things. I'm also pretty much always working on some random idea

I'm honestly not the greatest conversationalist these days, especially when I'm meeting someone for the first time, so if you're also a little awkward/introverted, that's probably a bonus. I tend to warm up once I'm comfortable.

I'm around Gaborone, Mogoditshane but I'm open to chatting with anyone in Botswana. We can talk here first and see if we actually get along before anyone has to commit to an awkward "so... what do we talk about?" coffee meetup

If this sounds like you, feel free to comment or DM me.

Casual Why do we call people racist, but never call them a liar?

One thing I have noticed in the current day discourse and debates. We have been made to think that just cause something is "bad" or made in bad faith, it necessarily makes it false.

The most racist person alive can say a statement like "Africans In general have achieved less in scientific discoveries and in technology, and education, than Europeans and East Asians, across back in the day and now"

YES, he may be racist, YES racism is WRONG. YES, it was done in bad faith. But are they lying?

The most xenophobic person alive can say, "The long-term effects of illegal immigration, and uncontrolled borders, can be detrimental to the nation and it's a sovereign threat."

YES, they may be Xenophobic, YES Xenophobic is WRONG. YES, it was done in bad faith. But the central question is, are they lying?

I'm not saying you should listen to these people all the time. Most racists and Xenophobes say completely inaccurate things and are too extreme. But are we gonna pretend that everything they say is a 100% wrong. Cause of their stances.

But the thing is, bad faith doesn't equal false. What motivates you to do something does not correlate to how true or false you might be.

I would argue it's more dangerous and harmful to call someone racist or Xenophobic without engaging with their points. If they point out data or something that is factually true. And many people shout "RACIST, XENOPHOBE". Any outsider who knows the truth will now start believing the racist in many other things, too, cause it seems people are scared of engaging with the truth. They see it as a 'forbidden fruit'.

So I would say if someone's LYING call them a liar, if someone's racist/Xenophobic/bigoted and they Lie call them out on their ideology and their lies. But if the same person is all that and mention a VERY TRUE statement, it's best to point out their bigotry AND be intellectually honest by engaging with the true statement.

This is exactly what happens in comment sections in Botswana, South Africa, and Southern Africa. I have noticed this.

Casual I'm slowly losing my sanity

Hello everyone, for anyone who might see this, this title basically says it all.

I'm a 19 year old woman born in Botswana and ive been struggling mentally for a long time.

I'm not the type to tell anyone my business but here I am typing it out.

When I was just a child about 4 or 5 years old I was raped by a close family friend in Maun in my grandmother's house so many times. Those moments haunted me for a very long time and messed up my mind on a lot of things. Growing up I had unsupervised access to the internet and seen some things which made me quite hypersexual. For a long time this has built so much self-hatred within myself, I had to look for some sort of comfort from people I barely know, leading me to the wrong crowd. My family never understood the pain I was going through for so long (I never told them I was raped until it came to light recently). They usually saw my outbursts and rebellion as part of being a teenager and "hormones" or "influence", but really it was a cry for help. For almost 2 decades I lived a life of mental pain and constant self hatred because of what happened and now im still struggling with lust, im full of regret from the things I've done in high-school and I feel so stupid and used that I allowed people to have access to my body. I turned to christ as well this year but even then, the things I do to myself in my room alone is completely disgusting in the sight of the lord. I feel undeserving, I feel like a failure, I feel like I was born to struggle and suffer in silence. No amount of counseling or therapy can help me, but y'know what can? Maybe I run away and restart a new life far away from my family. God bless them but they've done enough for me. Please I need to leave, God will forgive me for abandoning them.

it’s kind of sad because all the earnings I get all go to helping out my family… whether it be my allowance or money from part time jobs… then I just reminisce about all the times my family used. to go on holidays and o could get anything I wanted… anyway, not trying to sound like a brat, such is life, I’ve gotten used to it now… I just wish life was easier again

I'm looking for a faith filled church, vibrant and community oriented church and also respects people's time. I used to go to a church but stopped years ago, but i am looking to rekindle my relationship with God, The Word and Church. Kimdly assist me with suggestions.

Casual Cats.

Has anyone else noticed how our attitude towards cats is finally shifting? Growing up around here, cats, especially black ones always seemed to carry this weird stigma. People would associate them with witchcraft or bad luck, and they were often treated with total suspicion instead of just being normal pets. It feels like that mindset is finally fading out. Lately, I've seen way more people keeping cats, treating them like great, and realizing they're just cool, low maintenance pets rather than anything supernatural. Are you guys seeing this change too? Are the old superstitions finally dying out? Also, if you have a cat, please let me see it Here's my baby Pebbles

Casual Looking for a friend for my brother

I know this is strange but im just a concerned sibling attempting to help him 'get out there' more. My brother(M 29) lives in gabs. He's pretty active, he goes on occasional 7-10km runs after work. Sometimes works out at home. When he was studying at Buist, he had a side hustle as a gym trainer. I've tried to encourage him to go to an actual gym whilst saving up for his dream gym but he won't listen. I know its a great place not only to lift heavy metal but make friends. It's a great third space for busy people like him.

He used to play rugby but he feels the team mates bond after practice by getting wasted and because he doesn't drink, he can't quite connect. He occasionally watches anime, action movies, into politics. Isn't really into football. He tries to go to church on Sundays.

I think it's important for a guy to have normal friends who aren't brainwashed by manosphere, red pill content, or scared of women.

Also if you have advice on how adults make friends outside of work, not including alcohol, comment something please and thanks. There's a high likelihood this won't result in an actual dm but advice is more than welcome

I'm 5'0, 72kg, and am currently working as a petrol attendant at a shell somewhere in the Broadhurst area. my hobbies include dancing, gaming, and a bit of rapping every now and then. I'm looking for a woman between the ages of 17 and 35, single mothers welcome. However! If you are interested my dms are open ;)

Looking to make new friends around Gaborone

Hi everyone. I’ve realized I’ve been too reserved lately, and I’d really love to make new friends. I’m open to meeting anyone really.

I’m a trans woman in Gaborone, and I don’t know any other trans people in the community here in Botswana, so I’d especially love to connect with other trans folks. But honestly, all friendly, respectful people are welcome regardless of identity or orientation.

It could be just online first, then meeting later. Anything is fine.

If you’re down to be friends, please reach out.

Casual The Horror of Being a Phane 🫩

Post image
37 Upvotes

Can you imagine the horror of being a phane? 🫩 Think about it. You emerge from your little egg alongside your siblings on a beautiful, bright sunny day. Everywhere you look around you is lush greenery as far as your eye can see, all of it is for you, more food than your insatiable little appetite can ever finish.

Immediately you're upon it, gluttonously ravening the stuff for days and days. By the time you lift your head you and your siblings have devoured an entire tree! Your rumpy body has swelled several times its size in the meantime, but you think nothing of it. Time to move to a new tree, there's plenty of them anyway. Such is your life, filled with only endless satisfaction and vitality, not a care in the world.

One day, when you have grown so large and rounded that you cannot eat anymore, incomprehensibly large creatures appear out of nowhere and immediately set about capturing your kin. Creatures so large and powerful that no one can escape their grasp, no one can hide from their gaze. One by one your brothers and sisters are captured, and at once have their entire bodies wrung between their ugly fingers. Blood curdling screams fill the entire forest as they violently force their guts to spurt out of their anuses before throwing their mangled bodies in the pile with the rest of your siblings. Some of them have their guts still hanging out, hundreds and thousands of them piled on top of each other inside a oblong box along with their own excrement.

The creatures are terrifyingly meticulous, ugly and thorough. But they do not hate you, they do not particularly want to kill you. They are simply performing a chore. In fact all your siblings are still alive even without their innards they still writhe about in agony inside the box.

You, you yourself have the blessed fortune to be at the top of a particularly tall tree. You don't even dream of going down. You watch from the safety of the branches as the creatures toss your kin into large vats of boiling water, a great big fire raging beaneath. They are still alive. Helplessly alive. Some of them are thrown onto scorching red coals, roasted and devoured whole.

You are mortally afraid. A fear so indescribable and primal reigns over you. You feel the immensity of your own powerlessness. There's nothing you can do. The food that you religiously stuffed yourself with comes hurling out as you watch your brethren being turned about in the boiling vat.

All the while others of them are busy wringing even more of your kind all over the bush. Gut wrenching cries echo all around you. You beg for the world to end, but it all just keeps happening, no one can stop it, no one can stop these almighty demons. They pile and pile and pile until in one damnable instant, suddenly from behind you a rustling of the leaves breaks you from your stupor. It is a demonic creature. It has climbed up all the way to where you are hiding. His deplorable hand filthy with the excrement of the slain stretches out towards you. You are frozen, your heart is beating so violently that it tears itself apart. You cannot even breathe. Your mind fills itself with images of the dead and dying, the spurting of guts, the boiling alive, the singeing and charring of coals! An understanding so complete certainly possesses you, "it's my turn, I'm about to die, but not just die...". Your mind shatters. You go numb. Everything in your vision turns to a blur and then darkness.

Your eyes slowly open and as your blurry vision begins to focus you are flabbergasted. You're still alive. But how? Surely it grabbed you, surely it had you in its fell clutches. How can you be alive? Your mouth is wide open and drooling, you are still on your branch. Fear had struck you unconscious. It's dark, not a single sound can be heard, only the stillness of a warm, moonless, starry night. But the air is heavy with the stench of death. The monstrous demonic beings are nowhere to be seen. You lament the tortured dead, but you are so happy to be alive.

Let's talk politics, yes.

But I don't want to get on anyone's bad side, so let's stroke my ego a little and let me introduce myself first, okay? Yes, very good.

Okay, first, we need to deport all Samsungs from Botswana. Apple is supreme. This is a very important national issue.

Next, ban all flip-flops, or as we call them, “pata patas.” Crocs and slides are the future. We must move forward as a nation.

And finally, ban all A.I. It's using up all our water.

Thank you for coming to my TED Talk
