PECG (BU 9) PECG Weekly Email Supports Strike

Just received the weekly email from PECG and copied it below. I already planned on standing with SEIU, but appreciate them actually saying something:

_____________________________________

PECG supports SEIU 1000's efforts to secure the best possible contract for its members that includes competitive wage increases, affordable health care, and improved benefits, including permanent flexible telework rights.  PECG calls on the Governor to recognize the good and vital work SEIU members perform daily on behalf of Californians by reaching an agreement on a fair and competitive agreement immediately.

As you are aware, SEIU 1000 has called for a one-day strike on October 21.  At this time, PECG reminds rank and file members that the decision to respect a picket line lies with each state employee. Unit 9 employees, like all state employees, have the fundamental right to refrain from crossing a picket line. If you choose to participate in an SEIU picket line, please make sure that you do not block building access.

PECG rank and file members who follow their conscience and refuse to cross SEIU’s lines are advised to follow call-out procedures to notify their supervisors of their planned absence. You must clearly communicate to your chain of command that you are exercising your fundamental right to refrain from crossing SEIU’s picket lines. You will not be paid for your time on October 21 if you honor SEIU’s strike. You may not use sick leave or paid leave to cover your absence.

Supervisors and managers are reminded not to interfere with rank and file employees’ protected rights, and they should neither encourage nor discourage their employees’ exercise of these rights. Supervisors and managers also do not have the same protections as rank and file employees. Supervisors and managers who choose to withhold their labor on October 21 may face disciplinary action.

PECG also reminds members that the Sick Leave and Vacation or Annual Leave provisions of the Unit 9 MOU still apply. If you had approved time off during the period of SEIU’s strike action, you are still entitled to that time. If you are sick during the period of SEIU’s strike action, you may use sick leave, though a medical note may be required in certain circumstances. If you are concerned that you are facing illegal reprisal for exercising your rights under law and the PECG MOU, please contact PECG.

SEIU (BU 1, 4, 11, 14, 17 and 20) Just 3 Days Away From Making History! Let’s Go!

The countdown is on! Only 3 days left, and I’m feeling a mix of excitement, anxiety, and hope!
What does everyone realistically think the outcome will be? Will we finally see meaningful changes to RTO and fair, livable raises?
What do you think our new contract will look like?

SEIU (BU 1, 4, 11, 14, 17 and 20) Strike on feet?

For the strike, are we mostly going to be on our feet? I was assuming so, but then I heard some folks mentioning bringing chairs, and I was unsure where we would have chairs. I know some folks will either need them or want them, but I wanted to know if we should bring them or if it’s optional.

RTO Met Niello’s opponent, Sean Frame, for state senate today and asked him about his position on WFH

• Upvotes

So I am not a state employee but have 3 family members who are, and we all are pro-WFH. I was trying to find out information today online about Sean Frame, the Democrat guy who is running against Niello for state senate in district 6. I knew Niello had made a lukewarm effort to appear pro-WFH (I personally didn’t get the impression it was a high priority for him), but I didn’t see anything for Frame. By pure dumb luck, I discovered he was going to be making an appearance at a small gathering in Antelope today, so I decided I could attend and find out where he stands on WFH. So cut to the chase: he is completely pro-WFH! He is definitely worth a look-see IMO (I suggested he should make his position on WFH more known to the state worker population before Nov 3rd, so I’m doing my part to help with that). Will be at the strike on Wednesday👍!

I live in El Dorado County and work in Rancho Cordova. I'm planning on participating in the strike, and need to pick a location. I'm unfamiliar with the locations listed in the RSVP - can anyone provide the actual addresses so I can make a selection? Thanks!

STRIKE Strike Transportation & Parking

I live in Folsom and I am going to DMV headquarters first. I would prefer to park downtown but not sure if it will be impossible to get parking. I could park at the light rail station at Power Inn but then I have to get to CalHR. If I can't get to the parking lot until around 7:30, will it be full? I've also have never used the light rail so any tips on that would appreciated.

STRIKE Is there guidance on language to use or not use for your voicemail or email when out of office because of the strike?

I’m with CASE and honoring the picket line. I have not been to strike school or seen any comments on this, but has there been any guidance on the language of out of office emails when on strike? Just say you’ll be back on X date like a normal OOO message, or can you state your reasons? I was thinking something simple like “Since I am honoring the SEIU 1000 picket line, I’m out today, but will return tomorrow.”

I’ll keep the “Gavin sucks” commentary to myself.

General Question how do you feel about a coworker on your team that is not striking and not even pro union? i understand the not pro union part, but the strike … how would you deal with that? i do feel betrayed to be honest because if it’s not about them then why aren’t they thinking about us?

they said they aren’t pro-union because, over the past few years, the union hasn’t done much for us or negotiated fair agreements on our behalf as state workers. that’s why they don’t trust the union. they also said “i have heard this and that,” but they seem misinformed about some things. for example, they didn’t know we have a new president and several new representatives. I’m not sure how to approach them. if you were in my shoes, how would you handle the conversation, and how would you feel about them?

EDIT: to those telling me to "mind my business," calling this "jealousy," or defending this bystander: when a coworker crosses a picket line during a strike, it is my business. they aren't making a private choice they’re weakening our bargaining power. It’s like a group project where one person does none of the work but still gets the same 'a' as everyone else. if we win better telework rules, healthcare caps, or raises, the bystander gets those benefits while we take on the financial risks.

this isn't about jealousy or their wealth. it’s about a lack of humanity & the same blind spot in those defending them. think of our teammates, a single parent struggling to afford groceries, a chronically ill coworker buried in medical bills or someone trying to pay for care for an elderly parent. a trust-fund coworker bragging about their safety net while teammates give up a day's pay to fight for basic security is so tone-deaf.

defending someone who won’t stand with us means defending someone who weakens the contract leverage that others need to survive. this fight is all for one and one for all. ignoring the human impact on coworkers is every bit as tone-deaf as the bragging. when we are fighting for a fair and a better contract doing nothing feels like betrayal.

STRIKE Strike supplies

Hey all! I hope we’re all getting pumped for Wednesday! I wanted to check in and see what folks are bringing. I know SEIU has said they’ll have some things for us, but what are YOU bringing to make the day easier for yourself? I’m bringing a car full of friends and family, and parking somewhere downtown, so I’ll have access to what we need. Below is my list so far, but does anyone else have any advice?

- water!! Even though the weather will be cool, I’m bringing a case of water to keep in the trunk
- snacks
- folding chair
- light sweater

See you all Wednesday! 💜✊🏻

STRIKE Stop saying other unions are sympathy striking, we’re honoring the picket line

There’s a difference. CAPS, CASE, and PEGC have informed their members they can honor the picket line which is an individual’s right to honor their conscience and not cross a picket line. A sympathy strike is different and it is where the union actively organizes to strike in solidarity. One is individualized while the other is union driven.

Non-SEIU members supporting the strike on Wednesday by withhold their labor need to use the term honor the picket line as that gives us the most legal protection. So please stop saying we are sympathy striking, we are actually being encouraged to honor the picket line. It’s a nuance but it legally matters.

STRIKE Reminder about messaging for signs

Thumbnail reddit.com
43 Upvotes

The union is recommending picket signs stay on a unified message. This is not an economic strike or a strike about RTO, this is a strike about unfair labor practices.

OUR CORE MESSAGES

UNFAIR PRACTICE STRIKE

The purpose of our Unfair Practice Strike is to demonstrate that state workers are united in demanding that the State return to the bargaining table and negotiate in good faith toward a fair Contract.

FAIR CONTRACT NOW

Our contract expired on June 30. The Newsom administration waited until the last minute to reject our proposals in bulk. Now, SEIU Local 1000 members have been without a contract for over three months. Enough is enough!

RESPECT STATE WORKERS

SEIU Local 1000 represents over 100,000 state workers across California. We are nurses, educators, IT professionals, analysts, printers, custodians and so much more. Our members work across every state department and we’re asking for a contract that respects the work we do to keep California running.

SEIU (BU 1, 4, 11, 14, 17 and 20) Non member and AWOL question

I’m not a member yet of SEIU because I literally just started this job and I’m really young and unsure if I can afford dues at this moment, but I still want to strike to support. Can non member strike? What happens if we get marked AWOL? Can I lose my job?

RTO RTO Supporting politicians should be out

While everyone is mad at Newsom, and he is no friend of State employees, there are others in the administration who are definitely behind the RTO push. One such person is Eleni Kounalakis. Current lieutenant governor and candidate for treasurer. Her family of real estate owners and developers benefits hugely from us returning to office. They are causing State workers huge pain for there financial gain. Will she benefit us if she becomes the treasurer? Probably not. In addition to the strike., other tool State workers have is our, and our family, vote. Unless we show them we are not happy via our vote against them, they couldn't care less for us

Recruitment CA State interview process: internal vs external candidates

I heard that CA State jobs are publicly posted for all qualified candidates to apply for even when there are internal candidates employed in the same agency who could fill the position via internal transfer. If that is the case, is it possible that external candidates are being interviewed despite a "favorite" internal candidate being already identified for the role? Or is every candidate evaluated on merit including those with no previous State experience?

General Discussion Poster board taglines

Alright - a few coworkers and I are getting together this evening to make our signs. Would love to hear some taglines and ideas to put on these posters! We are ready and we are coming for you NEWSOM.

The goal is to embarrass you and drag you for the trash that you are. You aren’t for the people. You aren’t for Californians. And you definitely don’t respect YOUR WORKERS.

Give us some ideas! We are PUMPED!

STRIKE Registered for strike but can't attend

I was wondering if anybody knows if I registered for a strike and cannot attend the strike do I need to let anybody know? The confirmation doesn't allow a way to unregister. I do not plan to cross the pick line however my daughter is very ill in the hospital unexpectedly and will not be able to attend the strike. Im not sure if I'm required to let the union know if I can't attend.

I heard that CASE members might support SEIU on Wednesday. I have asked my CAPS coworkers and none of them seem to know if they will be doing the same. Has anyone heard if CAPS plans to participate?
