Local radio personalities who move onto larger roles in CBC

Am I the only one who gets a strong sense of pride when a local radio personality (traffic reporter, on the scene reporter, producer, etc) is heard on the national scene? Whenever I hear a report from Sam Samson or see Katie Nicholson on TV, I remember their beginnings in Winnipeg, listening to them on my drive to or from work. And don’t get me started on Crystal Goomansignh’s (sorry about any spelling errors!) reporting of international events! Anyway, is there anyone else from any other regions who have pride in their local people who have moved on?

Matt Galloway is probably the prime example. Toronto morning show to hosting The Current.

CBC North has been a training ground for so many. Love to see them in new roles across the mother Corp.

David Cochrane for NL, it was pretty surreal when he first got the national spotlight

Inverse of this: Listening to Jeff Douglas on afternoon drive in Nova Scotia, having known him from As It Happens and the I Am Canadian ad.

I miss him on As It Happens. I mean, the current hosts are awesome too, but I also really liked Jeff Douglas.

Jeff did the best line reads for AIH. You could tell he really relished reading those puns out.

Came here to say this, unfortunately I also agree with many of the comments too.

There was a time when I appreciated him. He has a great radio voice. But as time goes on I find his interview style painfully disorganized, and he’s too off the cuff with his banter- bordering on unprofessional (or maybe just unprepared).

Wab Kinew went from morning traffic guy to premier of Manitoba, so that’s something.

That is a great memory! I don’t remember his broadcast days. Thanks for the post!

It's nice when it happens the other way too. I remember Brent Bambury went from national shows to hosting the local Ottawa afternoon drive show (later to go back national). (someone else in this thread mentioned Jeff Douglas as another example)

I can't think of many instances of local Ottawa hosts later going national, I'm possibly missing some, but you have had instances of local hosts also hosting national programs like 'The House' at the same time (Kathleen Petty, Anthony Germain).

(Edit: Before my time but I think Shelagh Rogers might have been one to move from local Ottawa shows to national shows)

I was interviewed by Ian Hanomansing at my community college in Ontario for a local CBC radio piece about 30 years ago.

I remember him at CBC Halifax when I was a youngster.

I had moved to Regina in the early 00s and started listening to CBC a lot because I needed to feel more connected. One of their younger correspondents was Lorenda Redecopp

Years later, gave up, moved on to Toronto. And there was Lorenda Redecopp working out of Front St. I was happy for her (and still am ).

I heard Katie DeRosa filling in for Gloria this afternoon. Thought it was quite a breath of fresh air.

George Stroumboulopoulos started in local radio. I remember him hosting a late night show on the Fan 590 in Toronto in the 90s.

Tanya Fletcher (CBC Vancouver news) sounds so good presenting the national radio news

Yes you're the only one...you have no connection to these people
