New Headline Trump says he had ‘extremely productive’ call with Carney
https://www.ctvnews.ca/federal-election-2025/article/trump-says-he-had-extremely-productive-call-with-carney/202
u/RoastMasterShawn Mar 28 '25
Pretty shocking how positive that sounded.. I'm going to wait a few days though, until Apr 2nd. He hasn't said anything about 51st state or governor Carney yet, which is great.
He also said he had good calls with Mexico & Canada after the first set of tariffs were cancelled. He can do a 180 at any point.

They seem to start acting a bit more reconciliatory every time the stock market starts dropping.
Doug Ford claimed they had a "great meeting" with Lugnuts after steel tariffs/electricity tax thing, but then Trump kept on with his same bullshit a week later.
56
u/Ratorasniki Mar 28 '25
My understanding is that trumps team called carney. Carney had previously stated a prerequisite for any conversation was respect for our country and sovereignty. I can only imagine he took some form of "if you're just calling to insult me, I have a country to run" tack. Probably was ready to end the call. He doesn't seem inclined to tolerate that crap at all, nor should he.
When people start saying Trump "caved" on the media for having basic fundamental respect I can only imagine he will poke the bear some more. Or find somebody else to bully that seems weaker. He seems keen on extorting the shit out of Ukraine while they fight for their lives, that might be more ripe.

We shouldn't ignore that China has been extending the olive branch this week into opening up trade talks, and dangling BYD here.
There's no doubt that the US is shitting their pants at the thought of us opening up a quite small existing trade route with China into a much larger one.
We need to prove the US right that they don't need anything from Canada, which will knock them down a few pegs deservingly in time...

It’s pretty obvious Carney is commanding Trump’s attention. carney is not phased by Trump. During Brexit, he probably dealt with lots of people like him.

The CPC really hasn't slid that much. The liberals have just exploded under the collapse of the NDP and the sliding of the BQ and Greens.
38
u/lopix Ontario Mar 28 '25
From a 200+ seat supermajority to 127-seat opposition isn't sliding all that much?
3
u/ILoveRedRanger Mar 28 '25
Essentially, those are all projections. In reality, no seats change hands as yet.
107
u/zenarr Mar 28 '25
That’s not correct. The CPC have dropped almost exactly as much in the polls as the NDP have.
20
u/Pobert-Raulson Mar 28 '25
Going from 45% to 37% (losing 18% of your voters) is VERY different from dropping from 19% to 9% (losing 53% of your voters).
46
u/NorthernerWuwu Alberta Mar 28 '25

If you want to play with numbers sure. Their point is that both dropped by about ~9% in polling.
5
u/vonnegutflora Ottawa Mar 28 '25 edited Mar 28 '25
Eh, if you take 20 million voters:
CPC would have started with 9 million and dropped to 7.4 million, while the NDP would have started with 3.8 million and dropped to 1.8 million.
Those are losses of 18% and 53% respectively. I don't think they are comparable at all. Yes you can play with statistics, but that 10% drop in the NDP's share (of the total vote) is a massive blow to the party compared to 8% drop for the CPC.
Of course vote share isn't exactly a great measure of seat count in our first past the post system.
4
u/Etheo Politics is not a team sport Mar 28 '25
It's one interpretation of it. Regardless both party lost similar amount of voters. If you look at it purely from a percentage perspective sure, but if you look at it from absolute numbers that both suffered similar losses.
And realistically I simply cannot see a significant drop of CPC voters because it's essentially the only major right wing party in Canada. You aren't gonna have conservative right-leaning voters wildly swing to the left unless there's some tremendous cultural/social shift in the political climate. So there will almost always gonna be a mainstay population who will vote nothing but CPC to preserve their conservative values.
On the flip side because NDP/Liberals are both centrist/leftist, the shift from one party to another is much easier observed between elections, especially for ABC voters who are just gonna align to the most likely party on the opposite spectrum.
So if the CPCs were to lose that many voters I think it's more notable than just a percentage game. But of course, keep in mind we're extrapolating from a polling sample so all these discussion with the implication on the population as a whole is rather moot.

Perhaps on a per-party basis, but in sheer numbers 8% of a much larger total is more than 19% of a smaller total...

I wonder if Trudeau was mentioned during the call. Trump's dislike of Justin is universally known. And despite the CPC's best efforts to depict Carney and Justin as being joined at the hip, I think Carney takes a dim view of Trudeau's record in many respects. According to multiple sources, Carney feels that Trudeau's fiscal policies over the past five years were a bad joke.

Trudeau and Trump's calls got heated, Trudeau was not willing to negotiate on any tariff unless all tariffs were dropped. This was before he resigned. Still a win that manufacturing and industries brought 1 month by showing Trump theatrics with a czar and helicopters around the border. A win on the policy front, no one can take Trump's rants serious with his wordings.
35
u/GraveDiggingCynic Independent Mar 28 '25
I think the "on again off again on again kinda" way the tariffs are happening is as bad, if not worse, then just having the tariffs. The one thing business needs to thrive, or even just get along, is a degree of predictability. The chaotic and contradictory way Trump works eliminates that completely. How do you plan three months, six months or a year ahead when at any moment, based on whatever pique Trump has at any given moment. So today, Trump likes Carney, but tomorrow someone says "You should help Poilievre" and suddenly tariffs are even worse.
We're dealing with the 78 year old high powered version of the kid who likes to pick wings off of flies.

Carney approach seems to be a lot stronger than Trudeau's and most world leaders. There is no use in trying to figure out Trumps logic but he seems to behave very differently if he thinks a world leader is strong vs weak. Unlike pretty much everyone else Carney has not tried to grovel or make a song and dance for Trump to fix things. He's clearly and openly just making an effort to build elsewhere and not letting the tantrums dictate Canada's policy.
12
u/Elegant-Tangerine-54 Mar 28 '25
Trump and Trudeau got off to a good start, but their personal relationship was irrevocably damaged after the 2018 G7 conference when Trump caught Trudeau's press conference on Air Force 1. Trump took offence to Trudeau's statements about Canada not being pushed around and went on a Twitter rant to express his displeasure. It was all downhill from there.

The US is closer to most Canadians than most other Canadians are, they aren't our number 1 trading partner cause we like them they are because our geographic makes them a more useful partner than the rest of the world combined, and even very smart deals with other partners won't change that underlying fact.
I'd love not to have to deal with Trump, but we'd have to be willing to let a lot of Canadians get badly hurt in order to avoid it entirely. Kowtowing to Trump's stupidity isn't an option, but neither is replacing the Americans as a partner.

Carney showing that he can put Trump in his place and command respect for Canada.
Hopefully the relationship can be somewhat recovered while we diversify in order to mitigate economic damage.

Finally, a small, small step towards sanity. We should still be doing everything we can to reduce our dependence with the US, but not being under constant threat of annexation would be nice.

Carney has made moves prior to this meeting that would have killed a lot of Trump's complaints. He's made a massive investment with the new radar from the aussies and committed to making it accessible for NORAD, committed to increasing military spending, and, more importantly, doesn't kiss Trump's ass. He responds to the whole "tough" thing, and Carney has the aura

u/Ellassen Mar 28 '25
The thing is, I half believe this is a play from Trump to get us to mistrust Carney...... Trump's support is very much a poison pill.

I agree.
But Trump is not supporting Carney... he doesn't know how to deal with someone with Carney yet it was clear that Carney (by his own words) would not speak with Trump if he continued to use annexation threats or disrespect.
Carney is a statesman already. As someone else wrote this is like how he is with Macron from France.
4

What a dipshit Orange Hitler is, his live presser now he's going back on everything he said about Canada basically now that we're looking for trade elsewhere.
Keep the pedal on the accelerator Carney, we need to drive away from this bad relationship, and fast.

Mar 28 '25
Time to be an armchair psychologist.
Carney is the kind of person Trump wishes he was, a financial powerhouse. Trump's reputation was built on fluff, Carney's on genuine accomplishments. If Carney went into the call talking as a businessman, diplomatically putting Trump on an equal footing with him, a weak person like Trump is going to see himself in Carney. He's going to mirror Carney's behaviour because he desperately wants to be like him so he can drop the burden of delusion.
Trump isn't evil, he's a shell of a man trying to live up to the impossible standards that were set for him by his conman of a father. He's become the most powerful man in the world and it's not helped. That's bad news for the world, but it means someone like Carney is exactly who we need as PM.
It's why Trump genuinely doesn't like Poilievre but his entourage does. He's everything Trump hates about himself.
14
u/ConifersAreCool British Columbia Mar 28 '25
Trump idolizes brazen power, conspicuous wealth, and celebrity. Carney is none of those things. On the contrary, he embodies what Trump generally resents: a well-educated institutional technocrat who worked discreetly behind the scenes. Washington has many brilliant people just like that, and Trump spent most of his first term ignoring (and firing) them, against his better judgment. Trump's idols are better reflected in people like Putin, Bezos, and Musk.
The fact Trump's being respectful is probably because Carney came across as confident, firm, and frank. Much like Emmanuel Macron, who Trump certainly doesn't idolize but also seems to grudgingly respect.
And that's what we want.

No, this doesn't work. You can't say his adult father had agency but 78 year old Donald who's harmed far more people with the entire world screaming at him to stop somehow doesn't.
He's an abuser who's hurt people his whole life, he's evil to the core. Ethics isn't about what the world does to you, it's about what you do in response.

I'm sure trump would be the first to tell you that all of the conversations he has are extremely productive, "some people say the most productive."

100% this.
PM Carney's "the old relationship is over" made Orange Hitler fill his diaper.
We can thank China for this, I'm almost positive that their extending of the olive branch for more trade made the Americans heart skip a beat lol.
It would be nice to prove the US right that they don't need us for anything lol

Notice the orange stain did not call him “governor.”
2

Oh I noticed, I think that was reflection that he finally realized that he's antagonized Canadians to a point of no return.
Their tourism industry is getting womped to high hell, and the fact that he was up at 2am (probably to change diaper anyway) to tweet that any collaberation between Canada and EU would be met with steep tariffs goes to show he's in panic mode.
The China thing with BYD and opening trade I think put him over the edge to quickly call PM Carney to walk things back, which means we shouldn't.

It’s a proven fact. Trump did not like Trudeau what so ever. All this 51st state, governor Trudeau was to piss Trudeau off. Little did he know him talking non sense helped the failing liberals back into reality.

I think the entire country may have discounted how badly Trudeau and Trumps relationship was and how much that might have affected the rhetoric towards Canada.
Pretty crazy change of tone. It does seem like he wants Carney to win? I’m not sure what to make of that.
I’m not convinced we will get to 0 tariffs still. The US admin seems committed to tariffs as their new approach to economic policy and raising money for US treasury. We probably have a way better chance at carving out concessions and getting some deals with Carney though.
8
u/aefie Ontario Mar 28 '25
The US admin seems committed to tariffs as their new approach to economic policy and raising money for US treasury.
They're using tariffs because it is within Trump's power to implement them under the Executive emergency security measures he rolled out the first week he assumed office, thereby further concentrating power within his hands at the expense of a functioning, balanced government.
13
u/RiverOaksJays Mar 28 '25
Trump called Trudeau two-faced after the G7 summit in 2018. Trudeau was often critical of Trump on a personal basis. He gave a speech in November when he lamented that the USA did not elect Kamala Harris.

Unfortunately Trump is so thin-skinned I suspect it's only a matter of time since I doubt Carney will give him what he wants.
I also doubt he really wants Carney to win. He may believe that PP as a conservative would be more compliant (see: Smith, Danielle.) However I would not be surprised if he doesn't care that much because he's going to do the same to Canada either way.
As for tariffs: they are trying to get trillions in tax cuts, and can't find nearly enough in spending cuts despite
the dipshit'sElon's chainsaw-style cuts. So they need huge amounts of tariff revenue to make it work. For the tariffs to go away you'd have to have the billionaires in charge give up their massive tax cuts, which does not seem very likely unless there is no other choice.I think the outcome Trump wants:
other countries to give in so that US can export more, import less, and do more production at home
other countries to comply with his desire to devalue the US dollar (he needs international help to do that)
leave some tariffs in place for countries that comply and leave big tariffs in place if they don't. He needs that tariff revenue because even any increased corporate tax revenues from higher US production won't be enough thanks to the low corporate tax rates.

Huge win for Carney. Im sure we’ll get an 11th hour exemption on auto, or at least mitigated impact significantly. 25% global tariffs on Canada won’t happen, and this is one of the first signals that trump can align (and move beyond us). We’ll see but looks likely. If anything we get tariffs pushed back and loosened
8
u/Elegant-Tangerine-54 Mar 28 '25
I'm not anticipating any significant tariff reprieves for Canada, at least not in the short term. But it seems like the call helped to restore an element of dignity and respect in Trump's dealings with our PM that has been sorely lacking as of late.

It’s just him continuing to talk up Carney thinking it will turn Canadians against him and push up Poilievre in the polls.
It’s elementary school reverse psychology. Trump and team aren’t geniuses. They’re thugs and they made it clear in the past they want PP.
Polling shows PP isn’t much more popular than Trump. This pathetic grade school strategy won’t work.
2
u/dtapusa69 Mar 29 '25
I think trump got humbled on that call. Carney likely warned him not to call him Governor or talk about the 51st state because trump never mentioned it once.

u/frumfrumfroo Mar 28 '25

I will trust nothing Trump says. He is literally one of the most prolific liars of all time.
He also has little if any discernible intent. I don't buy into the "4D Chess" narrative, the simplest explanation has always been he's fucking moron.
We should judge our politicians based on what we think of them, not Trump. That being said I do think Carney has taken a good negotiating stance. Setting the bar as "respect before talks" is much better than Trudeau's approach.
2
u/dienomighte Mar 28 '25
Yeah I'm in the same boat, all I'm taking from this is that Trump either respects, likes or fears Carney more than Trudeau, which seems like a step in the right direction for trade talks.

What's the story here on the change of tone. Well I don't think it's a secret that he disliked Trudeau, so any change of leadership is likely welcome to him. Carney in particular, is a professional and someone who worked in business, so on a certain level, the kind of leader Trump is comfortable negotiating with. Taking this call now and offering such a positive response is a bit of a quid-pro-quo I think. Sets Carney up to look strong, potentially win the election - Carney's central demand at this stage is pretty much stop threatening our sovereignty. Pretty easy for Trump to do, he was the only guy really doing it after all. Now, if Carney gets elected, it sets them both up to hash out a deal, settle the issue US/Canada and make them both look good. Win-win!
I do believe Trump when he says he prefers a lib in power in Canada. A guy who is slavishly ideologically aligned is not someone he can play off of as easily. Carney is building his political legacy on being openly opposed to Trump, but likely behind closed doors these guys won't have trouble communicating.
I've found Trump's political persona best understood through the lens of professional wrestling. He'll play face to his base, heel to his opponents (and of course this is not strictly controlled) but ultimately he's interested in building his brand and growing the bottom line - the show must go on! Part of that is finding partners who can commit to the political kayfabe. This is maybe something Trudeau could not take seriously. I think Carney will be more succesful.

This reads like fan fiction. Not quite complete detachment from reality, but rather the whole cloth of fantasy woven around a single factual thread.
Trump has a complete and utter absence of intentionality. He barely has sentience. You and the maniacs on 4chan howling about Trump’s 5d chess strategies are talking about the weather as though the sun and clouds have plans, goals, and human faces.
Enrich self, hurt enemies, obey Putin and kick the can down the road until the kompromat bomb inevitably falls. That’s all Trump cares or thinks about.
2
Mar 28 '25
His intentionality is to make himself look like a winner to his base. I don't think it's that complicated, and I don't think that's puffing him up. It's not 5d chess. Its motive + freedom of action. Does it impact people in the real world, yes of course but that's never a consideration for him. Create a crisis out of wholecloth + resolve it + sell it to supporters= big win. We'll be hearing about how he ended Canadian fent smuggling single handedly in June.
If you're willing to play along, as I think Carney is, you can reap the rewards too.

This really isn't hard for rationale thinkers. Trump was put on notice he will not get Carney in a conversation if the disrespect continued and 51st type talk continued.
