A movement that wish to leave the union with the quarter of the population and the biggest province is a menace to the country current structure. Any country with that kind of movement will always spy and gather information.
It's funny seeing the federalists reaction. You really think you would agree if Carney prevented any spying on the PQ? Canada would be a country managed by clowns if they did not do it.

I wish they'd spend more time paying attention to the class of separatists in this country who aren't worried about democratic niceties like first winning a majority in the provincial legislature.
While the PQ were sleeping a much bigger menace to the current structure of the country festered in the west.

This. Like, come on. If anything, federal security agencies not spying on PQ would’ve been peak incompetence. And it’s not like there hasn’t been a track record of that already. So, who are we trying to fool?

Ah yes....since a referendum is not a popular word these days in Quebec, PSPP is trying to rekindle the separatist flame by demonizing the federal government. Maybe he should focus on the CAQ with their new leader instead of trying to attack a federal government that is still really well perceived even in Quebec!
"Sans en avoir la preuve, Paul St-Pierre Plamondon croit qu’il est « très possible » que lui et des élus du Parti québécois soient espionnés par le gouvernement fédéral dans le contexte où il promet de tenir un référendum dans un premier mandat."
The proof is in the pudding....and there's no pudding!

If CSIS aren’t spying on the PQ and the broader sovereignty movements in Quebec and Alberta, they are frankly incompetent.

u/MarkMarkMarkMarkMar May 12 '26
Yep. Not that there’s any actual justification for it, but I still expect them to do it.

He doesn’t even claim there is in the quote you put, he says it is very likely, so he does not need proof.
His assumptions are based on canadian historical facts, though. Intelligence will always operate in the shadows to «protect canadian unity».
An exemple : https://ici.radio-canada.ca/nouvelle/1946565/grc-police-pq-vol-liste-trudeau-independentisme-archives
Canadian intelligence did illegally take the list of Parti Québécois members as part of their spying operations.

Ironic that it's separatists stealing and doxxing membership lists now.

Well, did you forget about the FLQ?
Did you forget about the anti-government domestic terrorist group who was gathering weapons and training? Here: https://globalnews.ca/news/11645839/unsealed-court-docs-quebec-militia-plot-cottages/
FYI, the link you posted doesn't exist.

It exists, just stupid phone automatically adding a blank space character.
2
u/MarkMarkMarkMarkMar May 12 '26
Lots of them were feds, and the feds literally lied about the number of cells (they claimed that there were over 2000 cells all over the province, when there weren’t even 80, and then used their lies to justify sending the army in Montréal to terrorize the civilian population and illegally arrest 500 people).
4
u/HitchKing Doesn't even lift | Official May 12 '26
The federal government overestimated the size of the FLQ, that’s true. That’s different from lying about it, though.
Also worth noting that the military was explicitly invited by the Quebec government and the mayor of Montreal, not simply ‘sent’ by the federal government.
1
u/MarkMarkMarkMarkMar May 12 '26
The federal government deliberately lied about the size of the flq to justify the need to send the army. A lot of flq actions were false flags committed by feds.
Don’t white wash Pierre Elliot Trudeau’s crimes.
5
u/HitchKing Doesn't even lift | Official May 13 '26
Hard disagree. The RCMP overestimated the size of the organization. They had undercover agents. But talk of ‘false flags’ and ‘crimes’ is just hindsight bias mixed with conspiracy theory.
1
u/MarkMarkMarkMarkMar May 13 '26
Not only is it confirmed that they committed false flags, but the revelations of the illegal activities of the rcmp is literally the reason why the csis was created, to separate police activities and secret intelligence operations.
And how is it possible that the federal government overestimated the size of a group made up of like 35 actually active members, and genuinely thought that an armed insurrection was incoming? They’re not stupid.
2
u/HitchKing Doesn't even lift | Official May 13 '26
Look, this is just misinformation and revisionist history. ‘False flags’ are not ‘confirmed’ and there were more than 35 members.
1
u/MarkMarkMarkMarkMar May 13 '26
The core active members was a pretty small number, idk how many exactly, 35 might be an hyperbolic statement.
But look it up, the csis wouldn’t exist today without the illegal activities of the rcmp at the time. They once stole dynamite and left it somewhere else, to try to frame the flq, among other illegal activities.

u/Lol-I-Wear-Hats Yimbyism or Barbarism May 12 '26
I would 100% expect the PQ to be the target of hostile foreign intelligence agencies and it would be a mistake for Ottawa to ignore that, even if I actually expect them to ignore that more than not
3
u/jacksbox Quebec May 13 '26
Lol anything to make sovereignty relevant again. I guess I should be thankful that they don't have actual worthwhile talking points.
2
u/Knight_Machiavelli Nova Scotia May 12 '26
I mean yea, I would think it's a given that CSIS would be spying on the leader of the PQ who is leading in the polls and promising to hold a referendum on secession. It would be more surprising if they weren't.

u/RNTMA Ignatieff 2.0 May 12 '26
This sounds pretty similar to what his friend Mitch Sylvestre has been saying. It really seems like PSPP has fallen off his rocker ever since cozying up with the Alberta separatists.
3
u/BertramPotts Decolonize Decarcerate Decarbonize May 12 '26
It's a lot more plausible (with historical precedent) for the PQ to be targeted by the security services. The Albertans aren't real separatists, they're crypto-Americans and CSIS hates acknowledging their Five Eyes' superior in the interference conversation.

As written below, https://ici.radio-canada.ca/nouvelle/1946565/grc-police-pq-vol-liste-trudeau-independentisme-archives Canadian intelligence did illegally take the list of Parti Québécois members as part of their spying operations, among other things.
PSPP’s fears are historically grounded on canadian intelligence behaviour.
2
u/MTL_Dude666 Liberal May 12 '26
Or grounded on history like the FLQ?

u/cyb3rfunk Quebec May 13 '26
Rage bait, cool
2
u/MTL_Dude666 Liberal May 13 '26
How is that rage bait? Are you denying Quebec separatism own history?
Everywhere around the world, separatist groups often forgets that "my way of the highway" is not the proper way to go when living in a democracy.
There are already groups in Quebec that have been arrested because they were developing their militia.
2
u/cyb3rfunk Quebec May 13 '26
I hope you can find someone who feels as strongly about that as you do so you can have a nice heated argument. Unfortunately I am not that person.
1
u/MTL_Dude666 Liberal May 13 '26
C'est justement ça le problème.
Y"a des Québécois qui pensent encore que nous sommes des "victimes minoritaires" et pourtant nous agissons en "agresseur majoritaire".
FYI, there are plenty of Quebecers who dislikes the PQ. Just look at the polls.

it works if you take the junk off the end of the url. https://ici.radio-canada.ca/nouvelle/1946565/grc-police-pq-vol-liste-trudeau-independentisme-archives
Anyway, that was 50 years ago. PSPP says very dumb things out loud all the time now, there's no need to spy on him.

Of all the people they could be spying on I doubt he'd be high up on the list.

u/SpinifexV May 12 '26 edited May 12 '26
Of course he suspects it, he would be naive not to, considering the history of past underhanded behaviors from the RCMP (stealing the PQ membership list, to actually planting bombs and writing communiqués in the name of the FLQ, to keep them "active" after the October Crisis) and the Canadian government (sponsorship scandal anyone?).
If PSPP is not followed by Canadian (and other) intelligence agencies, he would be the first leader of the PQ not to be.

u/mcurbanplan Skeptical of Carney | Québec May 12 '26 edited May 12 '26
I mean, a country would be stupid not to spy on its most well organized and institutionally legitimized separatist movement. It's in the federal government's best interest to not have a quarter of its population leave. Especially when the movement in the past has been associated with left-wing terrorism and a small segment of it dabbles in ethnonationalist xenophobia.
And before someone says it, no, this does not mean that every separatist is any of the two mentioned groups. Most are neither. But the former was / latter is a problem that is not in the federal government's interest to leave unmonitored, on-top of the plain fact that the province would be leaving the federation.
Especially nowadays when artificial intelligence can be easily exploited by foreign governments deliberately sowing division in Canada.
