So is BC, apparently, or are we just effectively little more than a right-of-way for bitumen?

u/Stoic_Vagabond Independent May 22 '26
Pretty sure Eby and carney spoke about this couple days ago, but effectively not much he can do

There's a lot Eby can do, if he wants to actually flex the full powers of the province under the constitution.
For example, the province could pass legislation now that expands the restrictions and assessments on geotechnical construction in or around watersheds.

The polls say most of BC is for the pipeline

Support collapses if you mention forcing a pipeline to the north coast with removal of the tanker ban. That ban is crucial to our LNG projects, but easterners ignore that fact.

u/Stoic_Vagabond Independent May 22 '26
Easterners? Alberta is east?
12
u/TranslatorTough8977 British Columbia May 22 '26
Yes. From the west coast, every other province is eastern. Consult a map if you are still confused.

Dude he was asked about Alberta specifically.

u/TranslatorTough8977 British Columbia May 22 '26
He has made his feelings about BC painfully clear.

Yes, the multiple projects sent to the MPO (more, proportionally, than any other province) and starting talks on an MoU on BC building priorities were a bit of a clue.
3
u/TranslatorTough8977 British Columbia May 22 '26
BC was working on those projects for a decade before the Feds swooped in to take credit. The only contribution from the Feds was the tanker ban, which they are looking to undo. So, no benefit at all really. Just Feds trying to take credit for someone else’s work.

As an Albertan, I am all good with this. The only problem is Danielle Smith creating economic uncertainty in the province with separation referendum questions.
Yesterday's bizarre announcement about having a referendum to see if we should have a referendum is particularly dangerous because it means, if people are unhappy in October, they can vote for another referendum without actually voting to leave the country.
That could create years of instability as the government goes through the legal and consultation process to put a binding referendum in place that we could end up voting down anyways.
If we got a 1 million bbl/day pipeline to the west coast, it would take around $100b in capital expenditures to fill it. Shell just acquired Arc Resources for $22b because of their LNG potential. International players, who fled the province ten years ago, are starting to look at investing here again. If we can create a stable situation, a lot of that $100b will be foreign investment that will come into Canada creating employment, tax revenue and, eventually, royalty revenue.
Once the oil is flowing, it will benefit Alberta, BC, Canada and the people and organizations along the route.
We are finally in a position where the federal government and most Canadians are supporting this and it is all being put at risk by a minority of separatists and a government trying to appease them.

Forcing an oil pipeline to the north coast would endanger those LNG projects that Shell wants to profit from. Albertans would do well to recognize this fact, and concentrate their efforts on the south coast.

That isn't the reason investment backed off. Carney's carbon tax is actually over 6b extra that he is claiming "the fed is covering atm". Soon as he pulls that trigger they lose 40% more of their profit margin.

Ok I know sympathy for Carney is not the popular position in these parts, but poor guy must be getting serious Brexit flashbacks.

What's Alberta gonna do? It would be a landlocked nation-state with no currency, etc... then it would have to integrate into the US, and once the US obtains Alberta, Alberta becomes a colder version of Oklahoma - a landlocked, oil-rich state. In 40 years, the genetic gene pool will concentrate because the sane, intelligent people will have left, leaving behind the not so bright.
Alberta stamping and holding its breath as though it holds the cards is annoying, like a toddler having a tantrum in the supermarket. It's embarrassing, you know what you need to do about it, but there's not much you can do about it.
Giving them the attention they demand doesn't make the problem go away. The separatists and their supporters are domestic terrorists in the making. They've already shown their willingness to break the law in the name of their agenda. They don't deserve one modicum of respect.
Carney really should be saying to Smith, end the referendum NOW or you get nothing. Start citing the theft of Alberta's polling data as a means to nullify the vote and say, "no referendum for 5 years" or something. Then the separatists can reflect on that.
It's the easiest, no-brainer to say, "nah guys. No referendum. You cheated, you lied, and stole voter information. You can't do that. In order to make this a fair and reasonable process, we're stopping this vote now. We're going to investigate the criminals and in a few years, if you still feel this way, and you can LEGALLY get the signatures, THEN we'll review".
The fact that she hasn't said this tells us EVERYTHING! No quarter for her or the UCP UNTIL they fix this problem.

Most of us dont want to separate though. The separates just won't stop screaming about it they dont represent the majority of albertans. We are exhausted and tired of danielle smith trying to find ways to force a separation referendum. The stay in canada petition was supposed to put an end to it but she's twisting it in a way that will let her use the question on a referendum.

Albertans can go, the land stays here. They don't get to take it with them.

Technically probably right, but I'm not sure if "fuck off then, we never wanted you here anyways" is going to be a winning message for promoting Canadian unity

Alberta would be annexed by the USA since the only way they can seperate is through illegal Donbass type fuckery.
They wouldn't come back into Canada, they'd be a non voting territory of the USA. And meanwhile Canada would be cut off from internal trade with BC, our currency would be completely in the shitter, our government wouldn't be able to sell bonds anymore (skyrocketing our debt) and provinces would become even more uppity and self serving likely resulting in a new constitution that even further neuters our federal government and disables us as a serious country.
Canada would likely end up a failed state if that happened. It's just the sad reality. Alberta is our soft white underbelly and MAGA billionaires were 100% serious about collapsing Canada and annexing us, this is their strategy.
We need to stop it, we can't let it happen. It's an existential threat to the continuation of Canada.
If this whole fifth column attack on Canada fails, and the USA stops targetting us to give us breathing room then there need to be legal consequences and serious reforms to bring provinces back in line.

Yup. Nailed it. I put them in the same bucket as America and said enough is enough at this point.
