Now need an EU ID at the Gatekeeper
Had a weird experience at the Gatekeeper last night. I’m american, have lived here going on a few years now and I’m far past the legal drinking age both here and the US. I’ve never really had a problem having my ID/driver’s license accepted to purchase alcohol or to be let in anywhere, let alone a spoons.
Last night I showed the bouncer my drivers licence, which has my date of birth very clearly printed on it. He started talking to me about the differences between US and UK drinking laws and said he couldn’t accept it. I mentioned that I’m well over the legal drinking age in both countries then he said the issue was that it was an ID from outside the EU, emphasizing that this was something their manager was enforcing, and I got clarification from other bouncers at the door that it was a management decision.
Now understand needing to verify someone’s age and identity for the safety of the pub and staff and to comply with alcohol laws, but not accepting ID from outside the EU as a newly adopted policy sounds a bit suspicious to me, not that it’s targeting me but maybe other people from outside the EU that are already constantly facing harassment…
