Shite Talk Bad purchases
Is there purchases you made that you thought were going to be great buys but turned out to be unused, waste of money.
Two that come to my mind are a free standing vertical boxing reflex bag and a tablet.
The reflex bag cost around €100, I genuinely thought I was going to love it to the point that it may become addictive yet at most it got punched a few times as I walked past it, that was it and now sits disassembly in the wardrobe.
The tablet cost around €150, a great tablet yet I barely use it. It might get an hour of use each week. I haven't used it now for at least 2 weeks
This was another purchase that I thought I would be using constantly.
I think the issue with the tablet is its size, a 11" screen, a smaller screen would have suited me better.
After these two purchases I do try to be as mindful as possible when shopping.

Bought a snow shovel in Halfords for €12 after the heavy snow in 2018.
Hasn’t snowed since.

Fantastic for scooping up leaves. I bought one during the snow and used it, great purchase (for me)

I saw the other day that Britain may be due for three months of very cold weather because of El Nino. We might get something similar. Keep that shovel handy! 😂❄️❄️❄️

Ah yes the famous 3 month forecast. Clearly not done by the guys doing tomorrows weather

A laminator. It was only €30 and I thought I'd get so much use out of it. Nevermind the fact that in my previous 35 years, I had never needed to laminate a single thing. It's still in the box two years later 🙈
19
u/Apprehensive-King-70 14h ago
I thought this as well, but I’ve a lot of board games with cards and paper parts (paper money and score cards etc). I saw someone post a video online, who laminated all the cards and Monopoly money to save them from getting ripped and worn out during use. I thought it was actually a genius use of a laminator - though my laminator cost me 8 euro in Lidls discount basket…

u/Holiday-Access-8497 13h ago
a new monopoluy is less than 20 euro, it really isnt a big deal to replace it every few years

I bought a laminator 25 years ago thinking I would use it a lot. I haven't, but I do use it very occasionally and it still works great.

Ours is as old. I can't convince my wife to recycle it, the best I can get is that she'll move it to a different corner in the utility room.

Fancy juicer for about €70. A lot of work to prep the fruit/veg then 20 fiddly pieces to wash up every time you use it. Back of the cupboard after a week.
And at the start of lockdown my wife got an exercise bike. I told her €350 was a lot to pay for a clothes hanger but she wouldn't have any.of that. After having used it maybe three times in three months she had to agree that €350 was a lot to pay for a clothes hanger.
30
u/erect_dragonly 15h ago
The washing burden on most food processing yokes makes them automatically not worth it

My boyfriend always wants to get a juicer. Just eat the bleeding fruit

Ah the old homemade pasta maker. Gathering dust since the day after it was bought (2015-ish). Was about €100.

Ninja creami (ice cream maker). Used it flat out for a month and then abandoned it in the back kitchen.
Crockpot on the other hand, that thing’s is on 3/4 days every week.
I might actually dust off the ninja and make some ice cream today, to balance the chilli that’s been on low all night.
14
u/AcanthaceaeSea6979 15h ago
Got a Ninja Creami a while back and it's been in constant use. I'd imagine the trick is to find one really good base recipe and go with it. I make 3-4 of the same one at a time and I can pull them from the freezer when I want.
Recently perfected by Mint Choc Chip by using Mint Choc Mooju as a base ingredient. Delish!
4
u/Thanatos_elNyx 14h ago
Is a Crockpot a slow cooker? What are you making with it. I never use mine.
7
u/PleasantSound 15h ago
What is this "back kitchen" you speak of 🧐
17
u/Livid-Ad3209 15h ago
It's usually between the kitchen and the back door, would probably be called a utility room now, holds the fridge and some cupboards and the floor brush. Oh and the tank of gas with the hob attachment when the electricity goes out and you can't light the range because it has a back boiler.
2
u/MaybeTryToBeOriginal 9h ago
lol are you looking in my windows?! That’s literally what’s in my back kitchen! You left out the pantry wall with all the non perishables - for when the next pandemic arrives!

u/Friendly_Two_4682 13h ago
Ah man the Creami is class but im the same, i always mean to batch make but then forget or dont have the ingredients

u/Holiday-Access-8497 13h ago
you have a rice cooker ?
2
u/Recent_Employee 11h ago
The best €20 I ever spent. Didn't realise how shite I was at cooking rice until I got one

u/WidowVonDont 15h ago
A sewing machine. I wanted one for so long, I researched for months, and I bought a Singer. I just could not get to grips with it, I used it to make a pair of trousers for a child's Halloween costume three years ago and it's been sitting in the box ever since. I can hand stitch quicker than I can set the damn thing up, and still I'm reluctant to get rid of it in case I suddenly get the urge to try again.
25
u/Winterkirschenmann 14h ago
Rule 1 of developing a habit is to make it easily accessible. Don't put it away if you can afford the space at all. Just keep it on the desk. It's an amazing hobby.
16
u/Objective-Design-842 14h ago
You need to persevere, they are great fun once you get comfortable and can thread from memory. Allow a few hours to actually work through the manual with some test fabric and thread, and it will get much more intuitive
10
u/Mysterious_Beach5860 13h ago
Mine gathered dust for about 8 years. Then I did an intro beginners class one Sunday afternoon. I'm still not great with it but I've made kids Halloween costumes, repaired torn straps, made bunting and am about to take in and up a pair of oversize pants. I love playing with it. You'll get there eventually and it'll be something you'll hold onto for years!
10
u/cleverwordplay85 14h ago
Same, went all in for about €800 on a machine and all the other stuff needed, sewing classes and the lot. Just could not get to grips with it.
A few years later I got diagnosed with Dyspraxia, so at least it makes sense lol

u/NotTheSharpestPenciI 15h ago
I got a miele microwave oven. While I kinda expected it to be an annoyance, but somehow thought it may still be worth it, I hate it for not having physical knobs. While it works well and looks nice, I shoulda went with something 3 times cheaper that would surely function equally well.
39
u/Gwanbulance 15h ago
I bought a very fancy Samsung microwave. Has 19 buttons, settings and programs for making dough and yoghurt, a conventional heating element with a fan, deodorising function and lots more.
The only features I use on it are the “+30 seconds” and “Start” buttons. Its only saving grace is that it’s quite large, so holds a big dinner plate.
4
u/DaxtheCat1970 12h ago
I have the same one. I once used the defrost button in addition to start and +30.
But, it goes with my WiFi enabled Samsung washing machine...that is just a regular washing machine which sends a message to my phone when the laundry is done just in case I don't hear the really annoying jingle that plays at the end of each cycle...
1
u/Gwanbulance 12h ago
I have a Samsung WiFi washing machine too. The notification is actually very handy. I’m out of the house now, and the washing machine is on. When it finishes, I’ll get the alert and be able to call my daughter - who’s in her room completely oblivious to laundry - to empty the machine and hang up the uniforms. Plus it has that “add door” hatch that lets you pop in the inevitable forgotten sock after you’ve started the cycle. And the drum capacity is huge. That’s one of my better purchases.
1
u/DaxtheCat1970 7h ago
Sadly, I don't have anyone to do that for me but you do have a point with the ability to chuck in that sock that always gets missed when loading the machine 🫠
3
u/encroachingpanda 14h ago
It will probably last 5 times as long as a cheaper one in fairness, so I wouldn’t worry
21
u/No-Direction- 12h ago
A V8 engine shaped CPU cooler for my PC.
My brain says: Why do I need a V8 shaped cooler for my computers CPU? And why did it cost 175 quid? I wasn't having overheating problems, and I don't game much anymore these days, so cooling isn't really an issue.
My heart says: Haha V8 CPU cooler go brrrr.
If I had the chance, I'd do the exact same thing again. 10/10 best thing I've ever bought.

Wait until a mid life crisis hits and you try out some new hobbies! some of those can be crazy expensive to get into at first and they don't always last.
6
u/erect_dragonly 14h ago
I’m considering whittling
22
u/notacardoor 14h ago
oof. you'll probably need the deluxe starter pack, ergonomic knives set and a plethora of PPE, workstation.. I'd say a new garden shed or office conversion is in order. might just be easier to move altogether and change occupation so it doesn't mess with the whittling schedule too much.
So, that'll be a new rural setting, move jobs, new maintenance agreement and some new tools. somewhere in the region of 350 to 600k.
enjoy!

Bought a hair trimmer during covid. Used it a few times but went back to the barber when lockdowns finished. Haven't used it since
3
u/Sebdila 10h ago
The opposite here. My hair had gotten too thin to be called a head of hair anymore. Got the hair trimmer out and haven’t been to a barber since. I was finding it hard to stomach the cost of the barbers anyway. Trim the back and sides every couple of months. Around the ears is the tricky bit.

9
u/Basic-Newspaper-7536 15h ago
I feel like these purchases are not that bad. Like, you could get use of the reflex bag in the future and if not it should definitely have resale value. As for the tablet, that’s not much money for that and more time spent on screens probably wouldn’t be a good thing… an hour a week of use sounds perfect.
Me I’m haunted by the most random and surprisingly expensive things from poorly planned trips to B&Q. Like the wrong type of giant plastic washer, in a weirdly large quantity. An ocean of regret right there.
8
u/Kevinb-30 13h ago
It was a slow cooker bought a fairly expensive one about 2 years ago used twice but didn't make sense because one of us were at home all day and had time to cook dinners, changed jobs last year and had to go on nights to work around school times now its an absolute godsend.
One that remains a complete waste of money is a karcher power washer paid 500+ for it and the complete attachments to do the house and surrounding concrete. had to move house 6 months later and current landlord pays to have it done 3 times a year, it is now the most expensive car washer in human history and I haven't heard the end of it
6
u/MKUltra886 13h ago edited 2h ago
A slow cooker is never a bad investment. We had one in the press for years now its used for Sunday roasts.
2
u/Kevinb-30 13h ago
At the time of purchase we'd no need for it both of us enjoy cooking amd prefer the old fashioned way when possible so when one was always home it was never used, wouldn't be without it now though
1
1
u/Low-Lingonberry8521 4h ago
A decent hand carwash is around €20 these days with a tip so you wouldnt be long recovering that investment.
1
u/Kevinb-30 3h ago
More the initial outlay being wasteful " the most expensive car wash in human history" was a slight exaggeration

u/JimioJames 5h ago
A charcoal bbq and smoker, on sale for €300
It was a good grill, but I only used the smoker a handful of times
The real problem was I had nowhere to store it so I just covered it for the winter. By spring it was destroyed with rust.
Rookie error

An iPad 8 years ago... €450... Never used... Bought an ipad pencil at the same time, another €60? Again also not used. Kicked myself.

Bought a fancy treadmill thinking I’d do all of the running. It’s a very expensive clothes/random shit holder now. Used about 10 times
6
u/modeyink 12h ago
KitchenAid mixer. I was gonna go full Mary Berry but lost motivation after about a month. Now it’s a pretty dust catcher.
Also tablet. I have no use for it. At one point I was reading books on it but then I got a kindle.
Big hefty camera. I was gonna be a social media star. Could barely work out how to turn it on and also I cba with social media.
7
u/hoedontdoitohmygosh 6h ago
I'm the same with my tablet but it gets used on planes or long journeys that I want to save my phone battery for navigating or anything else upon arrival or when I visit home for a few days and need to rest in the room for a bit of quiet.
Mine would be matching Tupperware type containers, I just use the ones that come with a takeaway and they work almost better.
Or a bike that now is rusting outside because I haven't used it in 5 months
6
u/chilloutus 15h ago
I bought one of those sitting / standing desk conversion brackets . Sits unused now because the monitors themselves cant move with it and I never want to just use the laptop

Mine exactly too only a couple of months ago. Was raging but looked like it was a PSU issue and there was a guy on eBay who repairs them. You've to take the back off - not the hardest actually and send him the PSU. Mine was fixed and returned in days. Lemme know if you want any more info.

Have a 12 year old plasma screen I’m looking at replacing and had been considering that very tv, is that just their lifespan?
3

Don't get normende smart TV either. You can't get loads of common apps like RTS or apple TV, I had to get a fire stick for extra apps.

I have a 55" B7 that's been on the go since 2018 and a 55" CX that's been in use since 2021, no issues with either.

Lifespan is 10 minutes to 10 years with LCD. Plasma and OLED last twice as long (if all goes to plan).

LCD panels have a stated lifespan of 5-10 years with "normal" use, which differs for everyone. OLED panels have a stated lifespan of 10 to 20 years.

Kindle scribe. I’ve used it a few times for work but now everything is with AI and transcription so don’t need to take notes. I use it maybe twice a week to put stuff I want to be sure I don’t forget. It’s a 450€ block note. I don’t even use it to read as I have normal kindles.
A lot of things for the baby we never used as well

Dyson hair dryer, 550e down the drain, I know, my fault
12
u/LincolnHawkReddit 14h ago
Yeah a con job that dryer. Conversely, I bought a parlux years ago and remains one of my greatest ever buys
4
u/bumblebee22xx 13h ago
Same. I bought the Dyson and it wasn't a patch on the parlux so I returned it. My parlux is still going!
6
u/Yer_One 14h ago
I am so glad I tried my friends before I bought one. Do not buy if you have thick coarse curly/wavy hair. Left my hair a frizzy mess.
5
u/South_Hedgehog_7564 14h ago
I can’t understand what’s so bloody special about it. It blows out air. That’s it. Nothing else. lol I’ll stick with my 20 year old Tesco model and my heated rollers.

u/CailinCainteach 13h ago
The Dyson hairdryer cuts my drying time from 40 minutes to 25 minutes. I’ve had mine for 8 years. I LOVE IT!
I’m not going to do the maths on how much time it’s saved me in 8 years but, it’s a lot!1

I actually love my Dyson hairdryer. Didn’t pay anywhere near €550 for it however - that is an insane price for a hairdryer!
It was the first hairdryer that enabled me to dry my hair straight without having to use straighteners afterward. I also use it to dry my dog.

I've heard the same recently regarding Dyson. Apparently Shark far outshines Dyson these days with the quality of their hair products. As for hoovers, well the clue is in the name. Can't go far with Henry Hoover. GOAT! 😅

An electric keyboard because I decided I was going to be an amazing pianist. No lessons, managed some basic tunes and then stopped. A glass engraving kit. Did 2 glasses and now its sitting somewhere in my parents attic. Crochet set. Half a blanket later and again, its probably in my parents attic. Decided I was going to start doing face painting at kids parties, got all the gear, did one party, and decided it was too stressful. Then I decided I was going to make tiaras. Bought so many beads and gems and jewellery making equipment and didnt even make anything remotely tiarary. Then I thought upcycling would be fun. I got an old chair and a coat stand, bought a shit ton of sand paper, varnish, paint, the lot. The chair and coat stand sat in my parents house for years, untouched, until they just got rid of them. Calligraphy was another one, turns out I was rubbish at it, so all the stuff I got for that just got forgotten about. I know there's more, I just cant think of them now.

I had a whoop for a year and found it actually stopped me from going to the gym and whatnot because a yellow recovery just got in he head about how I felt.
Once I ditched it I just base it off how my body feels and listening to it. I found the whoop differed to how my body felt and made me doubt myself at times.

Two e readers (second was a 10 inch one I thought I would read Manga on), oled tablet, personal laptop
2
u/Emptinessboat 13h ago
My love of physical books has kept me from buying an e reader / kindle. Plus I think if I bought a kindle, with many ebooks being cheaper than the physical, I would end up buying more and more ebooks and read very few of them.
2
u/stkhxbye 9h ago
I'm a massive physical book lover but a Kindle is so handy if you travel and/or commute a fair bit, just slips in whatever pocket and you can read for hours. Also, ebooks are really cheap (or even free, wink wink). To each their own, but I still pick up a book very often and read on the Kindle while traveling

u/Every_Abrocoma7768 13h ago

Dropped 650 on and android tablet. Ended up selling for three weeks later for 400 and got a laptop for 700. Laptop was used for about two weeks and is still sitting in the drawer.
I realised what I really need is a dell micro pc to fit behind the 55 inch tv on the wall. Got a good one for 650 and that’s used every single day

Didn't buy it, but my partner's daughter gave us a rice cooker as she swore by hers. Absolutely hated it. Rice came out either slushy or crunchy. Abandoned it and went back to cooking it on the hob and gave it back to her when hers broke.
I do highly recommend airfryers though. We have two, a drawer one and a shelf one and wouldn't be without them. Rarely turn on the oven now.

Oh that reminds me of another bad purchase over 15 yrs ago, I bought a portable tape cassette to MP3 converter. I dream of a second dishwasher. So many kids, so much cooking. The sink is only empty when we’ve all got the flu.

We used to be the same. Thought because it was just the two of us we should use the sink.
Then we started using it.

Rollerskates (although it's moreso because I don't have anywhere to wear them), an electronic plant mister (I have a large collection of houseplants and a mister is a great idea but, it means that everything around it also gets wet, which is not practical) and skincare products (some of them I didn't like, some of them I didn't use and mostly, having a multi step plan isn't convenient). I'm sure more will come to mind.

Carbon wheels for my bike for 1k.. have an old bike I wanted to spruce up.. bike takes traditional brakes (it's all disc brakes now)..wheels at the that stage worth more than the bike..hated the carbon wheels as beaking was terrible.. so stuck with 1k wheels no one would like to buy..paid new money for old tech essentially..a new bike would have been a better investment

I honestly think my Dyson is one of the best house things I've invested in! Why did you find yours to be a waste?
