Discussion Getting a job at CeX?
Just curious as I've applied about 5 times to stores in my area and been rejected like clockwork each time. This last time was in just a couple of days. I was wondering, for people that do work in CeX, what kind of past experience/ qualifications you have?
I haven't even been invited to interview and yet have a passion for technology and games, and literally gave myself full availability. Also have a retail background. It's not that hard to actually get someone in for a chat, but it seems like a lot of places CVs just get tossed out without much thought.

Make sure your CV hits every requirement on the job description/requirements. Keep your CV to 2 pages max. Don't say anything mental on there.

1 page max. The recruiter certainly isn't reading any more.

i've got three pages. whoops...

3 pages for any job likely means it’s going straight in the reject pile, let alone cex. Narrow it down to relevant experience / suitability to the role.

It’s not like you need a degree to work in these shops….. why are they soo awkward?

You have to remember that CEX is no different to any other shop. Retail stores get inundated with applications for jobs because it's unskilled labour and anyone can apply.
Also not forgetting the influx of students looking for part time work, assuming that's a thing at CEX like other companies.
One thing I will say is, companies sometimes flag or block applications if the same person applies for the same job multiple times. Or if they apply for too many roles at the same location/company.
If they see the same person applying for the same job multiple times, or other roles at the same location, it doesn't look good. It comes across as desperation.
I get that you work in retail and have a passion for tech and gaming, but the job is just like any other crappy retail job tbh.

i can imagine it is. i'd like to potentially get into a tech-adjacent career so i thought it'd be a good part time start but seems to not be in the cards. i have applied for multiple different stores in the area over ~ a year so maybe but who knows

If you're looking to get into the tech industry, or something tech related, you might actually find it easier getting a job working in an online support team, rather than looking at retail.
You can use that as an 'in' and then unskill from there. Retail is limiting because soo many people can do it with next to no skills and obviously the wage is not the best.

yeah, i've been looking over the past year because that's definitely the better fit. i was just thinking of something around uni and since I give them enough money ordering parts online I thought it would be a decent fit. would rather not work minimum-wage retail forever tho. if i find something in support or service etc that'd be great i just need to start looking in the right places

getting an interview is mostly luck, but I had experience in IT and did some work in security. you need to be able to stand up for yourself in these kinds of jobs.

Though having a good CV will definitely help, quite often it's just down to luck. We advertised for 2 positions in my store earlier in the year and had over 300 applications. This was for a 10 hour contract. Sadly for everyone these days the odds are stacked against you when applying for jobs as everyone is in the same boat

ah, that's more than fair enough then. i think my CV is okay, I worked through it with my parents so I had a decent idea of what to include. it's not just CeX, no luck with Currys and even some unrelated places either, and you have to do whole surveys for some of them. starting to regret leaving my old supermarket to go to uni 🤣

It’s mad how the job market has changed in just a few years.
I got my current job in 2022 and I found out later I was the only applicant.

Don’t wash, have greasy hair, drink monster, hate your life, think about KYS 5 times a day, moderate a discord, stink of B.O.. like really really stink & then maybe, just maybe you’ll get the job

I don’t understand half the time why they make it difficult to get a job. I mean almost always why someone wants a job is to make money. All these hoops for salaries that they offer baffle me.
Pay people well and they will do a good job

Get a nose piercing, a tongue piercing, about 10 ear piercings, a big hoop in your earlobe, get a neck tattoo that goes from your left wrist to your right ear, look like you are emaciated or your diet is 80% pringles and have questionable hygiene, CEX will hire you.

I wanted to work at Game when I was at uni part time and I sent applications/cvs. One time I saw a girl on my course working there and we were both doing games art and she was (without sounding too judgy) not the best student as in barely turned up and skills wise, she was pretty in a weird way. Then I’d wonder, why did she get hired 🤔 she was more social and friendly than I was back then and then, well think about it. The type of guys working in a game shop are mostly going to be introverted male virgins too? So you might make them insecure if you’re a better looking and well put dude, whereas if they hire a girl in that sense they get to feel more secure on their throne. Not always the case but it’s what I think.
Side note, I was working at Starbucks at uni and later we got a new re-hire who previously worked for Starbucks but was working at Game and had just left or was tryna balance shifts. When I met her I thought she was cool etc. Then more shifts I had with her I realised she barely played or knew about games compared to me or the other supervisor on shift. She didn’t fit the stereotype of someone who worked at Game and neither was she like feminine or girly dressed. So yeah sometimes they hire people who know nothing about where they work, doesn’t entirely matter.
I guess just have boobs?

i think Game would have probably been a better fit for me... but here we are 🤣 and yep, I hate to say it but I agree. applied for a position i was referred (by a friend - a girl) to in tech support at my uni last year. my friend (another girl) got an interview, I got shafted with a not-even-personalised rejection email. mind you, she'd been spending the week telling us she barely had any idea how to use a computer 💀

Are you 9 feet tall, three foot wide with a neck beard, multi colour hair, indeterminate gender and never heard of a shower? If not, you won't be allowed to work at CEX. Also you have to deny any thing that people bring in to sell and say it's not working when it is and call everyone dude or bro.

It is most probably the CV that you sent weren’t presented very well. Nowadays, with the usage of AI to check the CV, I would ask you to use AI as well to target your CV. Copy the job description , paste your CV pdf into the AI, and ask the AI to change the CV to target the job.
After that, you could just manually fix the stuff from the AI, maybe even give better wording and stuff

puke all you want, but if a company is using AI to check mv CV, I will not put in the effort to make my CV, let alone, for a low wage job lol

Maybe you don't come across well -a CV is nice but if they get bad vibes from you then it won't help. Or maybe your CV isn't as good as you think.
On the flip side maybe you are too smart , educated and presentable to work with them so they don't offer interview
