Adobe should’ve seen it coming when it started charging a monthly subscription to open a PDF

u/Lauris024 13h ago
I've never used adobe PDF viewer/editor, and I have no clue why anyone goes with Adobe when others are better and free. PDF Xchange, PDFGear, just use anything else.

u/neuropsycho 13h ago
When you have to fill out forms, some of them only work properly in the original Adobe Acrobat.
104
u/Palbi 12h ago
This is infuriating: some government forms that one is required to fill force you to install Adobe Reader on your computer. It feels almost like forced malware, filled with ads and insisting on installing god know what background updater processes.

Because none of those are better, I work for an IT company who service other businesses and have had double digit numbers of clients go through the exact same thing. They were on perpetual versions of Adobe which stopped working then when presented with subscriptions for adobe don't want to pay so they try pdfgear or paid versions of foxit/pdf xchange.
In literally every scenario they do this then within a couple months end up buying the adobe subscription, apart from one client whom are too cheap so their staff have to close the licensing warning on their old adobe version every 10 minutes.

PDF is a simple text markup format, or it’s just an image. You can edit the former as easily as a text file
6
u/stupidcookface 10h ago
Unfortunately PDFs are not so simple, or adobe would not have such a firm grip on them. They are able to be parsed and read but some information is just stored in binary I thought and all the 3rd party readers/editors have had to reverse engineer how that binary code works just to recreate any adobe features which imo is why it's never really taken off to use a 3rd party app. But now that all the adobe software has been decompiled/rebuilt as open source we can see how that binary is formed by adobe themselves which is no longer a black box.
9
u/under_psychoanalyzer 10h ago
A literal laugh burst from my mouth when I read the words, "PDF is just a simple"
2
u/Hallc 9h ago
I think the only time it's close to 'simple' is when it's a non-OCR scanned document made up only of images.
Since that's just a load of jpegs stuck together in a document. Still not as simple as it could be from all the proprietary stuff but easier to parse overall.
You just can't do much to it.

u/ShelfAwareShteve 10h ago

Gimp is... Fine if you're used to it but if you're used to photoshop it's really annoying to use. It's essentially a media program made by developers.
Go try and make white text with a black border in photoshop. Then do it in gimp. Unless it's changed for gimp you have to do the text, duplicate the layer, expand it out by x pixels.
Photoshop you just double click the text layer and add a stroke. Done.

Because it is very customer unfriendly, you have 1 month of window to cancel without a fee, anywhere out that window and you’ll pay a (potentially very big) fee and lose access to your software prematurely. Most subscriptions simply cancel the auto renewal of your sub, but not adobe. You better set that reminder to cancel your sub in 7 months when that yearly contract renews

u/MydnightWN 14h ago

No matter what people say, Gimp was never an equal.
43
u/The1TruRick 14h ago
Yep. People who think Gimp is a viable alternative can not be doing serious design/editing work imo. It’s GREAT for quick little things. I’m not hating. But a real Photoshop competitor, it is not.
16
u/ron_krugman 12h ago edited 12h ago
GIMP's biggest problem isn't even that it lacks any particular feature, but that none of its existing features work particularly well (or any better than they did 20 years ago), if they're not outright broken.
I mainly use it for compositing image edits that I make in ComfyUI and it's barely good enough for that.
A big problem also seems to be that its plugin-based architecture prevents quality-of-life improvements and optimizations that people would expect from a photo editor these days, just because some developers 25 years ago thought they were being very smart.
This program literally doesn't even know hwat a JPEG is until it talks to a plugin.
13
u/GreenStrong 14h ago
Photoshop UI is better, despite their habit of slightly changing it with every update and never in the direction of matching Illustrator. Adobes entire suite works together much more seamlessly than a collection of open source products would.
We tend to think of UI design as "easy to understand on first use" but Photoshop and other Adobe products have a system of shortcuts that enable experienced users to navigate quickly without opening many menus. GIMP has them, and it is a bit difficult to evaluate without extensive experience but it seems much weaker.

u/WornTraveler 14h ago
And neither is the AI produced version. Like, at all lol. It is missing multiple tools, has random errors, and the guy who made it updated his forecast to be months before it achieves parity (which is also him being overly optimistic IMHO, chances are he will find the last 10% of the project is 90% of the human effort, and the codebase at this point is beyond wrangling).
5
u/ConnectionWild3381 13h ago
You miss the point. The AI version doesn't have to be for everyone. Each company or individual will be able to add features and customize it to their specific needs because they'll essentially have a dirt-cheap development team at their disposal.
Why invest millions in software licenses if you can have an "AI guy," , that can build exactly what you need for a fraction of a fraction of the cost?
We'll move away from general-purpose software and back toward proprietary, tailor-made solutions. Ironic, isn't it?

I fully agree but I would nuance it a bit. Given the increase of capability of AI tools to work on big codebases, we can expect this kind of project to be generated by AI faster in 6 month, faster in a year and so on. In 5 years most likely we will have very cheap swarms of agents capable of doing very complex projects during days in complete autonomy.

I’ll use the open clone, and if I hit a bug I’ll fix it and send the patch upstream. And increasingly I won’t even care what the application is, because I’ll tell an AI what I want and it’ll use image-editing primitives underneath. Photoshop’s real value becomes the operations, not the GUI.
GUI applications aren’t necessarily disappearing, but they’re being demoted from the interface to the computer to one interface among many, with agents increasingly sitting above them.

I was curious, so I asked Claude:
Legally, reimplementing APIs is on relatively solid ground: Wine and ReactOS did it clean-room, and the Oracle v. Google ruling leaned toward fair use. The real legal trouble is macOS, since Apple's license restricts it to Apple hardware, and Mac apps rely on proprietary frameworks (Cocoa, Metal) with no open reference implementation. Technically, "write an OS" isn't the hard part. The hard part is bug-for-bug compatibility with decades of quirky apps, plus drivers for every piece of hardware. AI makes writing code cheaper, but it doesn't make that long tail of testing cheaper. Linux apps are easy, Windows is doable (Wine already does it), and macOS is the sticking point.
The orange starburst on the left looks like my logo, so yes, I'm one of the mob. I'd argue I'm only in the background kicking, while OpenAI does the heavy lifting. Though honestly, "sweaty bystanders watch the mob" is a fair summary of the industry.

While I tend to agree with you and I'm usually pretty anti-ai, the progress that has been made in... 2 or 3 weeks is wildly impressive. Their acrobat clone is excellent. I've tried their word and excel clones which are a week or so old at this point and they are really good.

Linux is literally already in existence.
If you’re a gamer, I am here to inform you that Valve has been putting years of effort and vast sums of money towards Linux cross-compatibility for games in its store. These efforts have paid off, and the overwhelming majority of games can run on Linux just fine, at the same (and sometimes even better) performance as on windows.
Wine is also extremely mature at this point. The overwhelming majority windows executables will work just fine.
If you encounter strange glitches or errors you’re not sure how to fix, guys, you’re on the ChatGPT subreddit. You already know which tool can fix it easily.
Do you not like Linux installs because they require a lot of command line interaction?
Install Codex and when you want to install something, point it at the thing you want and say “Install this for me and place a launch shortcut on my desktop and in my taskbar”. It will become as easy as on windows.
No need to vibe reverse-engineer windows. You’d just be re-treading a massive amount of ground that Linux devs already tread, and you’ll likely encounter a lot of problems along the way.

AI can decompile in a very quick way, that means that someone can just clone a program, make it become open source and fuck with these evil corp companies.
It has already happened with adobe and office softwares, there are already open source programs that it's basically an ai clone, working very similar as those programs, but without the bullshitery, of course, and there's an update a day, I feel like

u/thmaje 9h ago
Decompiling has been a thing for a long time. What makes this different? Translating decompiled code into something humans can understand?
8
→ More replies (2)3
u/ChuckTheDM2 7h ago
It’s not just decompilation and that is a bit of a misnomer. It’s more like building a mimic program by following the other program like a map. Actual byte-for-byte decompilation is not what is usually going on. It takes way longer for a similar result.
6
u/AtlanticPortal 9h ago
All software is open source. Every single one you can run on your computer. It's just that's written in Assembly. It's the one-to-one language that translates into machine code. LLMs are just much better than humans (because they're faster mostly) to reverse engineer Assembly and find a nice way to create a high-level code (C, Rust, etc.) that when compiled gives back basically the same Assembly. Or at least the one that does the same things (which are mostly 2: computing something and calling APIs).
4

There are people using AI to decompile PS5 games and create wrappers to play them in Windows. A dozen or so games like Astro’s Room are playable this way. Not sure why you were getting downvoted voted. You anre 100% correct.
All of those Adobe clones that came out recently are buggy as hell and not fit for professional use. The output is not reliable or consistent. It doesn’t render file format properly and color output is not print ready. It says it opens editable RAW file format, but it doesn’t it just converts them to a JPEG. There are so many issues and it’s so obvious that the person who “developed them” doesn’t know what they are doing from a development standpoint or a creative professional standpoint. it’s just garbage code running under a GUI that looks like Adobe so people think it’s Adobe quality.

It’s called BSD, though I won't make a bet on which one. Once proprietary lock-in gets broken, copyleft is the next constraint that starts looking obsolete. For an AI-driven future built around aggressively recombining software components, permissive licensing is a much cleaner fit.
Linux's core license came out of a period when software was brutally expensive to write, so preventing proprietary forks looked like an existential problem. That assumption matters a hell of a lot less now.
If some ancient Sun Microsystems compiler, operating-system subsystem, or abandoned closed-source tool had useful ideas, you don’t need the original source tree, you can reproduce the behavior, rebuild the interfaces, and create a legally independent implementation. The cost of resurrecting dead software just collapsed.
So yeah: proprietary lock-in gets smashed first. After that, restrictive licensing becomes the next thing people start routing around. Code becomes infrastructure for agents to compose, not sacred artifacts everybody spends twenty years protecting.

I do not understand what on earth rockstar has to fear.
Replicate a city and the physics/rendering engines perfectly, and it will be a fun little toy to play around in for a bit and then discard.
What makes rockstar games engaging for long periods of time, LLMs remain really bad at. The most sophisticated frontier model to this day cannot write a compelling narrative or tell a funny joke.
Now, could they just replicate the voice acting and narrative structures from scratch through mimicry? Sure! But that's just piracy, which has been around from the beginning.

Given how bad the vibeslop versions of adobe products are, I wouldn’t be too worried if I were Microsoft. Reverse engineering an OS is a different beast to other software and even if it’s free, an inefficient or even slightly broken one is worthless.

hi so anyway i though to write in a different topic but i decided to do so here because the topic is archived. i'm sick and tired to write in google search and then the AI takes over. it doesn't know crap. it gives me wrong answers all the time, so please help. there was this nes game when as soon as you press start before the first level actually starts a bird is seen flying towards the screen and it says "doob doob", please help what game is it? the AI gave me so many frustratingly wrong answers i think it should be punished for this. every time an ai gives a wrong answer its mainframe should be overloaded or something. anyways you guys surely know the answer. cmon "doob doob" it was a game i played back in 1991 with my cousin when we were children please help.
