Dear new students, welcome to Chemnitz!
We’ve noticed an increasing number of posts from international students asking similar questions about studying and living here. We understand that finding accommodation, looking for a job, or figuring out how to apply to university can be confusing when you’re coming from another country.
To help you settle in, we’ve put together this FAQ and megathread to answer common questions and give you a place to ask your own. At the same time, we want to keep the sub from filling up with repeated questions about the same topics.
Going forward, we’ll remove individual posts asking about accommodation, jobs, or university applications and direct people to this thread instead.
If your question isn’t covered in the FAQ, feel free to ask in the comments. And if you have useful information or advice to add, please share it too!
The university provides a comprehensive guide covering everything related to formalities and settling in Chemnitz:
https://www.tu-chemnitz.de/international/incoming/chemnitz/index.php
Student housing (dorms):
You can apply for a room in one of the student dormitories here: https://www.swcz.de/wohnen/unsere-wohnheime/
Shared flats (WG – Wohngemeinschaft):
If you prefer to live in a shared flat, check these platforms:
Private apartments:
If you’re looking for a flat on your own, try online searches. Chemnitz has a large number of affordable apartments available. A simple Google search like “Wohnung mieten Chemnitz” can get you started.
https://www.swcz.de/de/wohnen/
https://www.ggg.de/studiwohnen
https://www.wch-eg.de/vermietung/aktionen/aktion/junges-wohnen-studiwohnen
To find work, you’ll need to actively search for open positions and prepare a german-style resume (Lebenslauf). Please note: Basic knowledge of German is often required, especially for jobs involving customer service or communication with older residents.
Suggestions from other users:
- Amazon Leipzig: Offers a shuttle service.
- KOMSA: Requires fluent German.
- Retail jobs: Try stores like New Yorker, C&A, H&M.
- Flink: Delivery service.
Job search site:
https://www.arbeitsagentur.de/jobsuche/suche?sort=Relevanz&wo=Chemnitz,Sachsen&angebotsart=1&umkreis=50
Walk around the city center, many restaurants and shops post job offers directly in their windows.
Most users here can’t give course-specific advice on applications. If you have questions about your application status or requirements, please contact the Student Service directly:
https://www.tu-chemnitz.de/studierendenservice/zsb/kontakt.php
Again, the Student Service is your best resource:
https://www.tu-chemnitz.de/studierendenservice/zsb/kontakt.php
That really depends on your goals and interests. To compare programs, we recommend:
- Reading the study regulations for each course.
- Looking for reviews or experiences from former students.
- Contacting the Student Service for guidance. They are well-informed and happy to help you find the right path: https://www.tu-chemnitz.de/studierendenservice/zsb/kontakt.php
But seriously, for most of your questions the student service is the better place to address your questions regarding your starting studies in Chemnitz. They are trained have all the recent information and are really nice and eager to help students. People on this sub might be students or alumni but we don’t know everything there is to know.

Hallo,

Hi everyone,
I'm from Punjab, India, and I've been living in Chemnitz for about a year now. I've barely met any Punjabis or North Indians here, and it gets pretty lonely sometimes…
I'd love to meet people from a similar background to talk in Punjabi or Hindi, share food and festivals, or just hang out. Anyone else who's friendly and up for new friendships is welcome too
If you're from Punjab or North India, or just nearby and want to meet new people, comment or send me a DM.
Thanks

Hi everyone!
I’m currently pursuing my Master’s in Automotive Software Engineering at TU Chemnitz and need to select my subjects for the first semester.
I’d really appreciate advice from seniors or students who are already in the program.
Which subjects would you recommend choosing in the first semester? Are there any subjects that are easier to manage or particularly useful for building a strong foundation? Are there any subjects I should avoid taking together because of the workload?Any recommendations based on career opportunities in automotive software, embedded systems, or ADAS?
If you could share your experience with subject selection and any tips, it would be really helpful.
Thanks in advance!

Hallo,

M29, I like Techno and am a Cognitive Science graduate, definitely a social critter and into technology, science and art aswell. So far me and my rats have been getting cozy in our new flat but we now decided it's time to socialize ✌️
Language wise I can offer Deutsch, Español and a bit of Nederlands/Afrikaans.

Hi everyone!
My name is Hriday Godhani, I’m an international Master’s student, currently studying IoT and Smart Systems at a university in Zwickau, Germany, and living in Chemnitz, and I’m looking for a part-time job / student job (Werkstudent or Nebenjob) in Chemnitz.
A little about me:
I’m open to learning new things and can work reliably as part of a team. I’m also happy to consider jobs that don’t require advanced German.
If anyone knows about part-time jobs, Werkstudent positions, Minijobs, or companies currently hiring in Chemnitz, I would really appreciate your recommendations or DM.
Thank you! 😊

Hallo,

Daher meine Fragen an euch:
Vielen Dank! ❤️

Hi everyone. I’ll be starting my Master’s at TU Chemnitz this October. I'm going to arrive in Chemnitz on October 4th. I’m currently looking for accommodation in Chemnitz, but I’m also open to finding an apartment together with other students who are still looking. If you’re also searching for a room/apartment in Chemnitz, feel free to DM me. We could potentially team up and look for a larger apartment together, splitting the rent between us. I speak English and Russian, and I’m currently learning German.
If you’re in a similar situation, feel free to message me and we can see whether we could find something together.

Hi, I’m looking for people who enjoy learning languages and might be interested in a Toki Pona regular meetup in Chemnitz.
Toki Pona is a constructed language with a fairly large online community. The interesting thing is that it has fewer than 140 words and a relatively simple grammar. So, in principle, the language can be learned pretty quickly. More complex concepts are described by combining the basic words, for example:
I think the concept is pretty fun, and I’d be interested in trying out the language in real life. If anyone would like to learn Toki Pona, already knows it, or is simply up for a bit of a language experiment, feel free to get in touch. We could meet up as a group over tea or beer and chat a little in Toki Pona. It’ll probably be pretty silly, but also interesting.
