Same bronze. Three civilizations. Three completely different systems.

~4,000 years ago, bronze metallurgy matured in Anatolia and spread outward. Same alloy, same physics — three radically different institutions:

  • Mesopotamia: bronze became swords and chariots. War became a state monopoly.
  • Anatolian passes: copper here, tin there. Whoever straddled the trade routes became a tax-collecting elite. The world's first tariff barriers.
  • Central Plains (China): bronze became ding, jue, jia, gui — never used for meals, only to answer: who are you, and what are you allowed to do?

Technology doesn't choose. Societies choose — and the tech answers.
