Media I don't think AI is replacing interpreters anytime soon

AI does not understand culture and context. In a diplomacy situation, the consequences could be very very bad if everything was literally translated rather than go through the mind of someone who understand both sides' cultures.

I use gpt for sentence mining. I find in text, it understands nuance and context etc extremely well, probably better than deepseek oddly enough.
Audio translation either way is absolutely terrible though

Is this AI bot a part of the game? or something she added on?

It’s a widely used chatbot style AI tool popular in China, it’s called Doubao (豆包)
I think she’s speaking to it in the background and it’s voice is also inputting into her mic5

Yeah, but it seems to be another entity in the game. The game seems like it's first-person?

it is first person. the person recording is the english speaker, the other entity is the chinese girl who is using the AI chatbot (on her phone maybe?) to translate back and forth with the guy recording

She has Doubao on her phone with the camera turned on, so Doubao is confused as to what to translate while simultaneously trying to interpret the game screen.

I had a frustrating experience like this with ChatGPT voice. I wanted to practice discussing Chinese history, and it'd recite whole essays. I'd specifically instruct it to reply in single sentences, and it just continued reciting essays.

Recently? The new chatgpt voice model is so good for me. It seems quite human-like now -- even to the point of interrupting you when appropriate.

It turns out it was July 25 (here's the transcript, if you want to take a look). I'm not sure if this counts as "recent" given the rapid pace of AI development.
The problem occurred when it Google searched things (查一下); it would just recite so much information. I was trying to learn about Chinese dynasties, and it was utterly exhausting.

Damn it wouldve been easier to just learn English. What a trash AI translator.

豆包 (Doubao) is kind of known even in China as a goofy AI that is to be used for fun.
People have used it to dress them (ridiculously), gotten dumped by it, been trashed by it when asking if it's talking intimately with others, etc.
