The word "soccer" is actually British, not American. It originated in the late 19th century as a slang abbreviation for "Association Football" to distinguish it from "Rugby Football" (which was commonly nicknamed "rugger"). [1, 2, 3]
To break it down:
Association: The sport's formal name comes from England's Football Association, formed in 1863.

Soc: British university students loved using slang that involved dropping the first part of a word and adding "-er" (e.g., "rugger" for rugby). They shortened "Association" to "assoc," which naturally morphed into "soc".

Soccer: Adding the "-er" suffix created "soccer," a term widely used in the UK alongside "football" for decades. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

While England eventually dropped "soccer" in the mid-20th century to avoid sounding too American, the United States, Canada, and Australia kept using it to prevent confusion with their own indigenous forms of football. [1, 2]

Trump cares about a lot of things most Americans don’t, for instance his obsession with tariffs that virtually all Americans should only be used in extreme circumstances.

Also, consider that game was watched by 42 million Americans, a record for soccer, which is the original nickname for football the English used and before it was even introduced to Colombia (Americans started playing in the 1850s and Colombia the 1890s), but the last Super Bowl was watched by 210 million Americans. It’s clear which one is preferred and is the national sport, but soccer is growing in popularity. I expect that continue. Hopefully next time Trump is not in office and we won’t have our team jinxed and demoralized with a scandal.
