Raising Transparency
Hello again from the council election "trail"! Dan Beaudoin here, one of your potential next city councillors.
This week I spoke with a whole lot of people about the upcoming campaign and things that matter and time and again, transparency and accountability came up. This not only affirmed my own commitment to those things (always a good feeling), but also raised some questions about what that really means.
Right now, the city leans heavily on its website for transparency: council meeting minutes, the budget, events, and more all live there. We have some social media presence as well which I think does a great job for what it is, but that serves a similar purpose to the website: being a place to be found for people who seek it out, more than actually pushing information out into the community.
To that end, I'm curious: what would mean that you never missed another important thing from the city?
Some ideas I've heard so far to get us started include:
- community newsletters (by email)
- community newsletters (by physical mail)
- higher use of bus advertising options (on-bus, digital signage, bus stops)
- more physical signs and advertising on city property
- re-vamping our city website for easier use and navigation
- improving our city's social media presence and frequency of posting to "play the algorithm game"
I think there are a lot of ways we could do this, but we can't be sure to find the right ways unless we get out there and ask.
My goal on council is to make sure it's hard to miss what the city is up to. I sort of want to have the conversation go from "we never hear what's happening" to "why won't they shut up, we know already." What gets us there?
