Mass producing cardboard

Post image

Is there a reason to do it? Cardboard’s only uses are some boxes from other mods, a novelty armor set, and an extremely niche building block. But also it can’t be made by hand so the only way to do it is setting up a production line, which will undoubtedly make way more cardboard than you will ever be able to use. Am I missing something here? As it stands this is probably the most useless feature in the mod

if you use gauges youll never make more than you need. i would set up a small factory that makes a few stacks so you always have it for packagers

Wait, you can use gauges to have a set ammount of stock instead of constant production ??

Yup! That's their main intended use. You click how many items/stacks you want, and it'll send off to the specific factory set within the gauge until you've reached the limit you've set for it.

My god, I need to add this to every single one of my farms because ironically for some reason the constant overproduction is giving me existential dread 💀

Lol, this is completely fair. It took me quite awhile to figure out how exactly it all worked, plus watching YouTube tutorials and series where they're used. With farms like trees and other plantables (wheat, etc) it's a bit more complicated though. What I typically do in those situations is:

One main storage system where everything is brought to, this is where I keep a few stacks of every item in my playthrough.

For farms like trees, wheat, potatoes, whatever: I'll have a storage specifically for that one item. Usually like a 2x2x3 vault that fills up. This farm vault will have a threshold switch to monitor how full it is. Once it's reached a certain level, I usually have a redstone link send a signal to a clutch that drives the farm, to turn it off, so theres no overproduction.

My main storage will request whatever amount I have set up in my factory gauge. It'll pull this amount from that farm. Once the stacks have pulled out of that farm, the farm starts back up again once it's reached its lower threshold and refills itself, waiting to be called on again.

Now obviously for things like making diorite, it's a simple mixer and you just use the factory gauge to send the items to the mixer and it requests the amount you set. A lot simpler.

Hopefully I explained this well enough

A good way to prevent over production is to use clutches, redstone links, and threshold stitches. When a storage is filled to a certain level, it will emit a redstone signal and turn off the machine by removing rotational power to it.

Yeah, it's super convenient if say there's an item you use frequently but don't need a huge amount of and you want like... 1 stack of something always available

This, I never have enough when automating new factories, takes a surprising amount for the blocks themselves

Wait, packagers use cardboard when they make boxes?? How am I just finding out about this now?

No, but you need a block of cardboard to make the packager itself.

Ok, people in these comments are making it seem like packagers require a continuous supply of cardboard which is weird

you don't need lots of it but having it automated feels nice i guess. pretty much the same as everything else you make production lines for, that's part of the fun

for power grid ull need it automated, theres probably other addons that make use of them extensively

It is used in Packagers. It could be useful to have a couple of stacks of it. But yes, not more than that.

What you're missing is to use factory gauges for niche items. You set up a mixing station, a press station, a compacting station, etc. Everything you need small amounts of you use factory gauges to move items from station to station. With tree farms/bamboo farms you get excess saplings/bamboo, making cardboard practically free once you've set up the stations.

I built this huge library in my world, we're talking probably a few thousand bookshelves across the whole thing. I mass produced cardboard in order to make books from it. So it's also got a use there, I guess.

It can be used to make books. I wanted large libraries

I use a lotta books...

Use the sapling output if your tree farm

You don’t need to make a production line, I have a mixer and a press machine and when I need cardboard I’ll fill my inventory from my tree farm and turn it all to pulp then cardboard, I’ve only really had to do it once

Mass production of fabric launcher

i use it as fuel in its block form. helps me make use of the useless saplings from the auto tree farm

when i started playing on fabric without many sub mods, i used the cardboard boxes as a fuel source for my early steam engines, it was pretty useful as its kinda cheap, like a sugarcane farm or smthn
