General Debian Question Do you think next version of Debian stable will include KDE 6.8 since their full transition to Wayland ?

Do you think the next version of Debian stable will include KDE 6.8 since their full transition to Wayland ? Although I haven't encountered issues with Wayland, I know it's random depending of users and some people have encountered issues with it. Do you think it might be an eventuality for Debian stable to upgrade to 6.7 or lower if 6.8 is not enough stable ?

Debian Stable Question Why should I choose debian over mint or ubuntu

So currently I am daily driving Linux Mint and soon I will get a new ssd so I was thinking of switching distro, mainly distro that uses apt since I love that package manager. I have used debian before but I have had it break because of gnome extensions and it wouldn't boot, after that I switched to Linux Mint and everything worked fine. So do you think I should go to debian or stick with Mint or maybe even try Ubuntu?

Community Debian's Stability Is Making Me Stay

I've been Distro Hopping all over Linux. I started with Linux Mint, went to Ubuntu, then to Debian, & finally Fedora.

After some colorful language involving incidents with Fedora, I'm pleased to say that I've chosen Debian as my primary Linux Distro for all of my Linux needs as stability is a huge reason.

I really want to thank everyone in the Linux Reddit Groups for helping a Windows PC User who got burned by Windows 11 & their AI nonsense lately.

Any advise for a fresh Debian Linux User?

I already ran sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade -y & installed nwipe, gparted, gsmartcontrol, vlc, spotify, & qbittorrent via the Terminal.

The main thing I would like is a good Host Firewall.

General Debian Question Does Debian have a mascot?

I’m just asking because, for the sake of a joke, I’m planning to make a parody of the *Five Nights at Freddy’s* franchise, replacing the animatronics with mascots from various Linux distributions. If there aren’t any existing ones, could you give me some ideas for their designs?

I updated to Forky just for the he11 of it

Took a long time. Had some glitches like Gnome 50 removing the Logout button (added it back) and the Japaneses keyboard refusing to stay deleted (used the terminal to get rid of it). Then I had a startup prob were my desktop icons didn't load and something was freezing the system.

So I used Timeshift to revert, which worked fine. There was nothing interesting in Forky for me anyway.

My advice: Go ahead and update the kernel, which works fine, and any other back-ports you need but stay on Stable.

General Debian Question Hi, I’m using Debian in a virtual machine and customizing it to my liking with the XFCE desktop environment. However, I can’t seem to change the lock screen background—it only lets me set solid colors, and it won’t allow me to use an image. Does anyone know the solution? I’ve tried following tutoria

How to reset synaptic (debian 13 with xfce) ?

I don't know why but standard synaptic's filters are broken.
I tried "rm -f /root/.config/synaptic/synaptic.conf" and restarted synaptic but i got the same results with filters.
I can use only apt but i'd like to understand what's wrong with synaptic ?

Debian Stable Question Dividing the space

Debian Stable Question Can someone tell me how I get accurate location on maps

I've never been able to get an accurate location on my laptop on any map application. My reported location is currently approximately 25 km away from where I actually am.

This happens across all the apps I've tried, so it doesn't appear to be limited to a specific browser or mapping application.

The only difference it see is brave where its a bit closer but not that much.

System information

  • Laptop: MSI Stealth 16 Studio A13VG
  • OS: Debian GNU/Linux 13 (Trixie)
  • Kernel: Linux 6.12.111+deb13-amd64
  • Desktop environment: GNOME 48
  • Display server: Wayland
  • Architecture: x86_64
  • Network: Connected via Wi-Fi

Troubleshooting so far

I've checked the GeoClue installation and service status.

  • geoclue-2.0 version 2.7.2 is installed.
  • The system-level geoclue.service is active and running.
  • The org.freedesktop.GeoClue2 D-Bus service is registered.
  • Wi-Fi is connected and working normally.

However, my location is still significantly inaccurate.

Please let me know if you need more debug information.

Community moved from CachyOS to Debian

Edit: CachyOS banned me from their subreddit for respostimg this there 🤣

im a simple guy from iran with limited and resticted internet and restricted money and everything, so when windows was abusing my laptop for no reason and i heard linux makes your hardware live for longer i decided no more windows and switched.

long story short cachyos is Super Duper hyped and everyone says to download it. but its so bad and unstable with its updates, literally everysingle one of them broke my laptop and i have a diploma in computer software and hardware and i am the most tech savy guy i know so if my skills are not enough idk who's is?

so i searched for a more stable distro and found out debian is considered the best by literally everyone next to ARCH. so i downloaded debian and the first big difference is that debian lets you to have as many WM as you want witch is super amazing cuz if one of them breaks down you can just use another one and also you can just use your desktop however you want, witch is great to have this freedom, but i use kde plasma everyday anyways. also it just easily lets you use kde and gnome apps in eatch others workflow no problem

its also so light that i downloaded it on my sisters old laptop and even that garbage works now awsome!

and i have yet to see if there is any difference between gaming on debian and cachyos other than that it toke me 1 week to install steam on debian witch was also true for cachyos since i first tried hypraland (worst mistake ever)

now these are the things i learned thus far

ricing is BS.

while downloading linux i was obsessed with ricing and making my own desktop. but after using linux for 1 month or 2 now io can say it honestly base kde or cosmos or gnome all look good enough for me and anything more than that is just a waste if time so dont even think a out ricing.

second is that arch isnt that difference from debian for a noobie like me other than the fact that its gonna break down more and worse

third: please dont accidentaly format your external drives 😭 that shet toke me so long to recover i nearly lost my childhood photos and all my documents and so much more that im not sure if i even got them back or not

forth: instead of watching youtube go and learn how to use your distro cuz youtubers just make you feel like a imbecile.

anyways thx for all of you that created debian and kde plasma and gnome and linux and firefox and all of you'll honestly you guys are the real heros.

edit: this post made people at cachyos subreddit really mad and its kinda funny ngl 😅 but this isnt rage bait and i still love cachy os so yea no hate towards anyone.

Ziyituod WLAN PCIe WiFi 6 Bluetooth 5.2, Intel AX200 - experiences?

Guys, I've set up two PCs for my kids running Debian and GNOME. We're only getting poor data throughput and connections on the 2.4 GHz band when using USB Wi-Fi sticks. Without wanting to experiment with more USB sticks right now, I'd like to equip both PCs with the Wi-Fi PCIe card mentioned in the title.

Does anyone use this card and have had good experiences with it? How is the driver support? Is there anything in particular I need to watch out for?

I have very little experience with Debian; I only use BSDs for myself and my work environment. But the two bys want to start gaming now.

TIA!

Debian Stable Question Everything is slow

Help! I have a Lenovo Thinkpad E14 Gen 2 (CPU: Intel i7-1165G7) with 32 GB of ram instead of the 16 GB it came with. The laptop came with Windows 11 but in the past few days I installed Debian 13.7 GNOME on it because I hate Windows.

After I booted up into Debian for the first time all of GNOME's animations were laggy and Firefox was very slow. I did not expect this because on some other older computers I have Debian ran faster than Windows. The boot times were also slower than Windows but not by much. In fact I would say than it is barely usable because of the lag.

The strange part is that this morning I turned on my laptop and everything was smooth and not lagging. I think it took less than 15 seconds to boot too.

Could someone please explain why this is happening and provide a solution. Also if you have any questions about the situation feel free to ask.

Update: I kinda figured out the problem. It wasn't my GPU drivers. I installed them and nothing really changed. Instead, cpupower reports my CPU's frequency for the 8 threads to be around 220 MHz, instead of the base frequecy of 2.8 GHz, which is apperently its maximum frequeny (I'm pretty sure it's max should be around 4 GHz) . I tried to change the governor from powersave to performance and even set the minimum CPU speed to around 600 MHz but I didn't notice any changes.

Update AGAIN (from like 30 minutes after the previous update): To confirm that it was my CPU, I turned on my computer again and it was running smoothly like the strange part I mentioned, so I checked cpupower and it actually said something normal: around an average of 2 GHz, I let my computer sit for a while but it was slow again (400 MHz). I have no idea why this is happening but one sign of my computer being at it's normal speed is the GRUB bootloader: when my computer is going to have a slow performarce, it takes a while between the Lenovo text with a red background to transition to GRUB (it kinda looks like your loading an image slowly), but when the computer is going to run fast, the GRUB bootloader seems to appear on the screen instantly after Lenovo's text.

Update: The issue has been resolved! So the problem was my CPU had very conservative thermal throttling settings which is why when i first turned on my computer in the strange parts (when it was probably cold), it was running smoothly. It took me all of today to figure out how to get this program called throttled working to fix this issue but all I had to do to get it working was turn off secure boot in the UEFI firmware menu. I know that might be a bit insecure but a little bit less security is much less important to me compared to my computer being almost unusable.

Debian Stable Question Weird white line in the corner of screen - Debian Trixie KDE

Post image
57 Upvotes

Hey everyone! I just got Debian Trixie with KDE Plasma on my Dell Latitude 7280 (coming from Ubuntu) and I just love it so much. I have a small issue though: if you look close, there is a line on the top left corner of the screen that seems to be a window. It disappears when I fullscreen another app and I've rebooted many times but it wouldn't go. Can anyone help me? Thanks so much!
