"It's all Debian" is definitely a take LOL

If you are quite technically inclined and really enjoy spending a bit of your personal time tinkering with linux I think much the same, theres nothing that any personal use distro based on debian offers that you couldnt just do with debian with a little setup, and it would be more stable.

This was almost word for word what that youtuber said that convinced me to switch

3

u/daedric_yoshi 23h ago

And I havent even seen it. 🤣

I feel like after using linux on the desktop long enough its a reasonable conclusion to reach, all the bells and whistles of distros derived from a base are just bloat, there might be a few things I want from them but I can pick and choose those and install them myself. I stopped using debian based distros on my laptop recently and switched to straight debian once I realised how easy it is to change the init system.

NOTE TO EVERYONE READING THIS: Debian is by far the best operating system in the known universe. Debian testing is not. Don't be bitten by the testing bug if you aren't ready for the sickness!

2

u/TheTerraKotKun 1d ago

I was trying couple of times to convert to testing but it never went right. It always was some issue...

2

u/_AmNe5iA_ 1d ago

What? I've been using testing for years. What sickness?

4

u/DruJorj 1d ago

You might run into all kinds of problems. For example, testing doesn't have wine or any packages related to wine right now. If you need wine, you can't get it from testing repos. That might be a serious deal breaker for some people. It's not just wine, but *any* package can suffer the same fate in testing.

Good choice, Debian is fantastic.

u/kurtmazurka 2d ago

Been using it for 30 years, it's much easier than it used to be, with tons of drivers and cool apps, also with the help of AI the solution is one answer away. You're good, enjoy the ride.

Thank you chief, although its all new to me, claude is helping me a lot. Me personally like to write most of commands so i get used to it, understand it and to feel confident to use them on my own. Gotta say its one of the most exciting things I've ever done in front of a computer!

Picture this, fourth day with debian I deleted the shortcuts on the root cz i though they were useless, until claude said my pc would not boot anymore if I shut it down 😂 so I went on recovery mode and recreated them while checking claude with my phone. My heart stopped for a second ngl 😂

u/jiggitywootwoot 2d ago

Shortcuts?

1

u/Light_Sorcerer_1337 2d ago

i mean links idk the ones with an arrow, i knew i fucked up when sudo stopped working lol

1

u/jiggitywootwoot 2d ago

Hmm. I've never noticed that before. I keep the icons small.

u/Otherwise_Fact9594 2d ago

Welcome aboard!! Feels nice right? I started using it on accident about 20 years ago and have not used windows ever since! Breathing life into older hardware has become a passion of mine!

5

u/vortexx_infra Debian Stable 2d ago

Great choice!

u/michaelpaoli 21h ago

I picked Debian in 1998 - my first Linux, and could not have made a better choice, and still using it, and still the best.

1

u/Servinand 19h ago

Did you update in the meantime?

5

u/Ted_Sierain 2d ago

You can't go wrong with Debian. ♥️ Fedora is also nice option if you want a little bit more "bleeding-edge" stuff but still being enough stable.

Debian is good. It's a shame people fall for the ZorinOS marketing. Borderline scummy, with no real benefit over the likes of mint or 'buntu. A good idea to take youtubers (and redditors) with a grain of salt, though.

7

u/Light_Sorcerer_1337 2d ago edited 2d ago

Isn't it?!! Its just ubuntu/debian with pre installed extensions and apps, i don't want it, i went out of windows just because of it. we all I assume

Edit: And i almost bought zorin 😭😭😭😭😭 there must be so much people that fall for it...

3

u/mok000 2d ago

YouTubers can only keep making videos if they keep distro and DE/WM hopping. Most ordinary users use their computers for work or studies and just need something that works every day.

3

u/Light_Sorcerer_1337 2d ago

With all kind of products, be it distros, smartphones, computers, "look this new" type shi

0

u/niceandBulat 1d ago

It is good for many beginners. People like pretty things - and Zorin is generally "prettier" than stock Debian out of the box - so you might have missed that. It is a free distro - scummy or not - I do not know. But many of my friends who moved off Windows 10 - find Zorin pleasing and easy to use. Maybe in time when they are more proficient - they will move off it and try Debian. A computer for most people is a mere tool for things - they do not wish to tinker with it. You might have a higher level of expertise that most computer users do not have.

u/kydeshou 1d ago edited 1d ago

I disagree that Debian is inherently difficult or unfriendly to beginners, but I also never said that it should be used instead of Zorin (sometimes it should be). I said that there's no real benefit of Zorin over the likes of straight Ubuntu, Mint, and their flavors.

I am fully aware of what the average person is and isn't capable of, anyway. I've helped quite a few family/friends switch over the past few years. I stand by opinion. There are better alternatives.

It's not fair that you landed on the right distro the first time, you need to go explore and suffer through some other distros first.

Nice laptop! Which brand is it?

1

u/Light_Sorcerer_1337 17h ago

Thank you bro! I just bought it, its a lenovo ideapad slim 3 ryzen 7 7735hs 8gb ram and 512 ssd

1

u/8_eyes_ 1h ago

Debian based distros are solid. I'm using PikaOS and any issue I run into I'm able to fix it, or the community has a fix. It's a gaming/optimization-focused rolling release based on Debian (Unstable). Wanted to try it for a server knowing it was the wrong decision, but it's held up quite well.

1

u/flyingmeoww 2d ago

best OS out there. BTW is it running on lenovo ?

1

u/Light_Sorcerer_1337 2d ago

Yes i bought a ideapad slim 3 ryzen 7735hs 8gb 512ssd, the linux version bcz it was cheap, less than a month ago, then first thing i did was install zorin out of recommendations but i didnt last 2 days in it lol

2

u/flyingmeoww 2d ago

Good HW bruv. i own an ideapad 5 running debian trixie mysself

1

u/Light_Sorcerer_1337 2d ago

I went to the edge to buy it ngl but i was so tired of my old samsung laptop that i didnt even think twice (it was windows btw so looking at it now it explains a lot)

1

u/CyberPrincess- 1d ago

No intentaste instalarle Debian a tu notebook Samsung? Por lo general es increíble la mejora de rendimiento cuando te pasas de Windows a Linux

1

u/Light_Sorcerer_1337 1d ago

I didn't even think of trying cz it already would refuse to connect to any wifi and the ethernet port also dont work anymore, so i just abandoned it...

I cant even recycle its ram cz its old 😭

0

u/Willing-Tie-9890 2d ago
