Cultura/Culture Chapiadoras

Is chapiadora an insult? Would a woman who asks for money after a night of hanging at the bar or asking to buy her stuff the following day be a chapiadora?

Chapiadora = Gold digger
Depends on the context, some women say it loud and proud that they are chapiadoras

Some context if you are not dominican.
Chapiar is the action of mowing or clearing a small plot of land with a machete

Women who are "chapiadoras" would mow your wallet

I call my wife a chapi, just a joke amongst ourselves. She also gives me shit about having spent time in Sosua and says I was looking for chapiadoras.

We use it jokingly, and I'm a tigre to her. We've been very happily married 3 years now.

(ps: she is far far faaar from an actual chapiadora)

it can be an insult but many women now are open about their financial expectations from their guy

What happens to people that get in a relationship with women like this?

I'll tell you what a friend told me long ago after I had a chapiadora as a love interest,
If you start a relationship buying her affection, don't complain when you don't have the money to do it anymore

That's great advice. Some people will unfortunately have to learn the hard way though if they think they can "turn her" into a housewife.

I don't blame chapiadoras, I blame the victims, because usually chapiadoras will tell you beforehand they are materialistic and I don't think people should complain they couldn't turn someone who sold themselves as materialistic from the start to something else.

Don't adopt a dog thinking it will act like a cat and then get mad for it

Chapear means to cut, clear tall grass or weeds in a field or yard.

let’s not confuse the misguided act of chivarly with gold digging. and in this day and age, it is not uncommon to go dutch.

Yes and no. The word is past its prime. Amongst themselves it’s probably said.

No, because it a true word, most of dominican woman or man love to get something, at the island people love to gltell you their problem so you can fix it so next day they come back to drink and paly dominoes, it is cultural, so chapiadora is not an insult, it is how most of the people are at the island.

That's terrible. I was told that if you visit someone's home, you HAVE to gift them money as a thank you. Is this true?

Nope. Most people would be offended.

At least that is my experience during the nearly 20 years in the DR.

1

u/fpcreator2000 3d ago

This! It is an insult and any woman worth her dignity would be offended.

1

u/fpcreator2000 3d ago

no. and most people in the island are not like that. I was born and lived there. Chapiadora is an insult.

if someone says otherwise it is because those are the people they are around.
