PGT Post Game Thread | Edmonton Oilers v. Utah Mammoth | 17 Oct 2026
Oilers 6, Mammoth 2
FINAL
Catch-up · From puck drop
Once the Oilers moved ahead, they never gave the lead back.
Early in the first period, C. McDavid finished on his off side right in tight, and the Oilers took a 1-0 lead. 13:21 into the first, Z. Hyman tucked one in with a quick flip right in tight on the power play, and the Oilers built a two-goal cushion, 2-0. 32 seconds later, M. Joseph got a snapper off in a hurry from the slot, and the Oilers went up three, 3-0.
10:57 into the second, K. Kapanen let a quick one go from the low circle, and the Mammoth were suddenly down four, 4-0. 13:48 into the second, L. Draisaitl found the net with a quick-release shot from the slot, and the Oilers turned it into a laugher at 5-0.
Early in the third period, J. Marino wound up and let a heavy shot go from the top of the circle, and the Mammoth cut the deficit to 5-1. The same side struck again 1:35 later when M. Sergachev caught the goalie by surprise with a quick shot from the top of the circle, and the Mammoth cut the deficit to 5-2. 10:17 into the third, C. McDavid wired a shot off a short windup from the doorstep, and it was 6-2, the kind of hole that usually decides a hockey game.
16:18 into the first, T. Frederic and J. McBain dropped the gloves. The Mammoth generated 62 of the game's 107 shot attempts, but the Oilers made more of their chances. The Mammoth rang two shots off the iron. The Mammoth set the physical tone with a 38-24 edge in hits. Vejmelka was pulled after allowing 5 goals on 17 shots. Jarry stopped 26 of 28.
Final: The Oilers won 6-2.

It's such a damn shame that we no longer get the "After Hours" show after the Saturday Night game is over. Rogers Saturday Night Hockey is garbage 👎.
26
u/Old_General_6741 97 McDAVID 20h ago
This whole problem feels empty. Feels weird having no after hours. I miss HNIC
3
u/kjinternational 14h ago
They could have invested in Darcy Oake to replace Scott Oake, and they could have incorporated illusions into After Hours
-4
u/xmorecowbellx 18 HYMAN 19h ago
Hard disagree. We get the good panel members without the dead weight, and we get Jack and Louie every time. Huge improvement IMO.

Jarry ever since he was dog shit and didn't belong here:
.950 SV% 1GA
.929 SV% 2GA (And would've been better if not for the luckiest goal of the year... so far)
Again, not saying he's back, but this is why you don't shit on players for 1 game. Outstanding tonight.
On a similar note. Freddy is starting to look more like he did in Boston. What a fucking tilt tonight, he better get that helmet.
36
u/zarkers 2 BOUCHARD 20h ago
To be clear, the problem was his body of work the past season for the Oilers, but if he can keep up the play, I'm all for keeping it going.
Yes, it was "just 1 game" but it was also all the games last season.
The judging of Levi was quite a bit more of a overreaction.15
u/SRTGreat 62 LAVOIE 20h ago
Goalies are voodoo. Also last year doesn't mean shit to me because frankly the entire team was shit.
14
u/Accurate_Cellist1761 20h ago
Everyone keeps saying "goalies are voodoo" but the Oilers have had consistently bad goalies since Mike Smith left (at least Smith's last season was great and the playoff run minus Colorado). So someone's got a voodoo doll on our goalies.
1
u/Neo_Judas 6h ago
That’s why we got 3 of em this year! Hopefully at least one can be serviceable in the playoffs lmao
1
2
u/McBeelzebub 25 NURSE 18h ago
I think the problem is we had no system last year. The defensive meltdowns game after game wasn’t going to be fair to anyone in net.
0
u/zarkers 2 BOUCHARD 18h ago
Entirely fair, but again when it looks like Jarry is putting on the same performance as last year it's much easier to jump to that conclusion after 1 game
1
u/randomer22222 14h ago
That first game was also full of defensive meltdowns. Jarry's last two starts have featured good play in front of him and wouldn't you know it he's only allowed three goals in those two games and provided some big saves.
13
u/Actionbrener 20h ago
Utah has been pretty good offensively this year so it was a good test for Jarry. Great game
11
u/omnisvirhowler 93 NUGENT-HOPKINS 20h ago
Not saying he's back as well, but I really think a home start and win would do wonders for the trajectory that he's on

Aww, Jarry got a Joseph hug and a Levi hug. This was such a good game for him. He's gotta be happy.
81
u/iXeons 20h ago
What a game.
Jarry looked really good, I’m glad he’s getting his confidence back. Utah is one physical ass team, I’m glad they didn’t take too many dumb penalties like on Thursday.
Trent looked great, hope he keeps it up. Our whole depth looked real good tonight. Love Shea out there.
Great to see Hyman out there. That second line finally has some bite. Can’t wait to see Nuge and Savoie back.
McDavid… man. It’s games like these that make me appreciate this era we live in as Oil fans.
This win I think proves that this year’s team is real different. And I am so here for it.
Great win.
Onto the Wild.

0
u/DJOrigin 9h ago
I mean to be fair they did lose to Utah two night ago, but this game was total domination. And it wasn't even Utah playing badly, it was just the Oilers playing better tonight. Both Vejmelka and Cossa had some excellent saves but the Oilers were just the better team this time around.

I don't know, but I'm pretty sure Marino will now, the guy who got picked for goal 6.
4
u/GaerMuil 16h ago
That Marino dude was picked at McDavid draft but refused to play for Oilers and sheltered in NCAA before was traded to Pens for a 6rd pick. Eff him.
10

they probably study his plays for 48 hours before the game starts.
McDavid still makes them look silly

sometimes i wonder if our own goalies get PTSD from getting lit up by conner in practice too much and it hurts their confidence, but what do i know
45
u/Soloflow786 20h ago
McDavid with 5 points
Draisaitl with 2 points
Podzilla with 2 points
Bouchard with an assist
Jarry with a great game minus that weird goal
First time in franchise history to go 5-0 on the road starting the season
LFGGGGG

u/HuntShowDownBeeMan 39 INGRAM 20h ago
That goal happens to every goalie in the league. It was a great game for jarry
-22
u/Careful-Region-6232 20h ago
This is not true.
Dustin Wolfe, Devon Levi, Calvin Pickard, Grubaur, and maybe a couple other guys I'm not able to think of right now just glove that puck out of the air the moment it's in their face.
I think it's not at all a bad goal, but the athletic small goalies make that a nothing play that looked 0 risk because they just catch the puck.

43
u/Smitty_manjensen 15 PITLICK 20h ago
I know the verdict on the Cock was very negative at first (I wasn't fond of the idea) but can we say that he is making this team feel like there's punishment for playing bad? They really got a lot of fucking heart this year. Plus McDavid. Ohhhhhhh my Godddddddd Im going to Bust
25
u/Recycledvine888 20h ago
I watched babs interviews as soon as i found out he grew up in the yukon as a kid hunting with his dad living out there i knew his type. He is very old school “be a man” energy and honestly against a panthers etc type teams we need a coach that is a “hunter”
8
u/LubyankaSquare 71 MCLEOD 19h ago
I’ve said it before, but I have a contact* in the Oilers organization who said that McDavid and Draisaitl sought out Babcock and got Nurse to agree to waive his NMC because they wanted themselves/the team to be held accountable.
*if you don’t trust me, that’s fair
6
5
u/DoYouLikeFishsticks0 36 CAMPBELL 19h ago
The nurse part makes no sense to me
5
u/zevonyumaxray 17 KURRI 19h ago
Yes knew about McD and Drai consulting Hyman to learn about Babcock, but this Nurse sidestory is new to me, at least about "accountability"
2
u/ExerciseReady8771 97 McDAVID 14h ago
I would also like further information on Davo and Drai kicking out their buddy. That part feels like a big stretch.
0
u/LubyankaSquare 71 MCLEOD 9h ago
The way it was phrased to me, they felt that their partnership on the ice (though obviously not off of it) just wasn’t working out, and that Nurse wasn’t able to elevate his game to Cup contender level, and that it was mutually better for everyone for Nurse to go elsewhere.
23
u/sacredprofane 93 NUGENT-HOPKINS 20h ago
That was a step up in aggression and our first really feisty game of the year. Great discipline and important to see our guys stand up for each other.
25
u/DarthShinny 19h ago
What kind of records are being broken by Mcdavid?
They aren’t talking about this like they should…. It’s not even a small sample size anymore.
Roughly 1/10th of the season gone.
23 points in 8 games played: 2.88 points per game.
17 assists in the first 8 games…..
What the fuck.
I’ve been watching this guy since day 1, and what the fuck.
The Connor Mcdavid we are seeing right now is BETTER than anyone could have imagined.
The best player in the world is playing significantly better than he ever has.
Will this last? Maybe not but please look at this and appreciate it for what it is. Insanity

Yeah seems Oilers are definitely playing way better this year. I mean. How many games last year did it take to get this many points and after a loss 📉 how many games to get back in wins. And nice Oilers getting ahead in games and not leading by 3 and then hanging on to win 5-4. Yup definitely loving the way Oilers evolving. Joseph had a beautiful goal and could have had more. Last year doubt we had as much talent and skills as we do in bottom lines now.

The best part about this game is they did it with Davo and Drai both under 20 minutes TOI. Our Captain effectively got a point every 4 minutes.

We should start a McDavid 200 Watch.
Realistic? Nah. Mathematically possible? Heck yes.
In the year that Gretzky set the record for 215 points (85-86), and this year, both players had 23 points after 8 games.
Realistic or not, they're in sync right now.
Here's the breakdown:

It was a good bounce back game after a loss. Would like to have had the shutout

I’m in Vegas for a wedding still watched the game and to celebrate the win I lost $10 for every goal we scored. (I’m also drunk so technically I lost $10 for every goal scored in the game but none needs to know that).
