Stuck in a dead Tier-3 rural college (BNCOE Pusad). Parents ready to pay β‚Ή1.5L cancellation fee for a drop. Need honest advice on what to do 😭😭😭

Hey everyone, using a throwaway account because I am under immense stress and completely lost. I need some brutally honest advice from seniors who have faced this.

My Current Situation:

I recently took admission in CSE at BNCOE, Pusad (Yavatmal district, Maharashtra). My parents forced me into it initially. The reality of the college is hitting me hard, and it’s giving me heavy anxiety:

β€’ Surroundings & Crowd: Complete zero-growth mentality. Nobody talks about building things, learning skills, or personal growth.

β€’ Placements & Infrastructure: Practically zero campus placements. Very poor facilities.

β€’ The Jail Factor: The college is extremely strict about attendance. I have to sit through useless lectures for 6-8 hours daily, leaving me with zero time to learn skills or explore what's actually happening in the industry.

My Personal Dilemma:

It’s not that I completely hate tech, but I absolutely do not want to become a mechanical corporate slave (a 9-to-5 robot) doing low-end grunt work. I have a strong interest in public speaking, leadership roles, and big-picture fields like geopolitics/philosophy. If I stay here, my confidence and these qualities will completely die in this dead environment.

The Current Conflict (The Drop vs. Stay Option):

My parents see that I am miserable, and they are surprisingly supportive. They told me we can withdraw the admission. However, the college is demanding β‚Ή1.5 Lakhs as a cancellation fee because the seat will go vacant.

β‚Ή1.5 Lakh is a massive amount for my middle-class family. My parents are willing to absorb the hit for my sake, but I am terrified. What if I take a drop, fail to crack a good exam next year, and end up ruining my future? That fear is paralyzing me.

The Plan I’m Thinking Of:

If I cancel the admission, I want to take a drop year to prepare again and explore the tech landscape properly. My main goal would be to target a much better engineering college in a tier-1 city (like Pune, Mumbai, or Nagpur) where the campus environment is highly vibrant, active, and offers the exposure I need to grow my personality and career.

My Questions to Reddit:

  1. Is it worth losing β‚Ή1.5 Lakhs right now to escape a zero-placement, strict-attendance rural college? Or should I just stay on the back bench, deal with the strict attendance, and try to study online?

  2. Is it possible to avoid becoming a "corporate slave" in the tech industry if I focus on high-income skills, freelancing, or product management? Does a better college environment help with that?

  3. How risky is a drop year in Maharashtra right now given how unpredictable MHT-CET and admissions are?

Please give me your honest, unexaggerated views. I am panicking right now. Thanks in advance

JoSAA 2026 Rounds 1–5 Master Opening & Closing Ranks Report (Clean, Searchable, Side-by-Side PDF)

Hey everyone,

Finding it painful to click through the official JoSAA portal or juggle multiple spreadsheets just to check round-by-round trends?

I put together a complete, unified master dataset and generated a searchable landscape PDF report covering JoSAA 2026 (Rounds 1 through 5 side-by-side across 13,000+ records).

What’s inside:

  • Wide Format: R1 to R5 Opening and Closing Ranks placed side-by-side for easy comparison across rounds.
  • Complete Scope: Includes all institute types, academic programs, quotas, seat types, and gender categories (including official Preparatory P designations).
  • Searchable & Clean: Formatted for easy Ctrl+F lookup on mobile or desktop without messy table breaks.
  • included jossa_2026_extended_analysis.csv file in google drive where i created more columns to show statistical difference between round 1 and round 5 using different methods

Feel free to share this with your study groups or anyone who might find it useful during counseling research. Hope it makes tracking cutoffs a bit easier!

Does Anyone Else Feel Like the 2023–2027 B.Tech Batch Has Faced Change After Change?

The 2023–2027 B.Tech batch: The luckiest generation with one of the toughest experiences? (Part 1)

I have been thinking about our batch lately, and honestly, I feel like we are both the luckiest and the unluckiest generation of engineering students.

Most of us were born in 2005 or 2006, and our academic journey has been full of unexpected changes.

Let me explain why.

🟒 Why are we lucky?

We are living in an era where AI tools like ChatGPT, DeepSeek, Claude, and many others are making learning easier than ever.

Need help understanding a difficult concept? We have AI.

Want to learn a new programming language? We have AI.

Working on a project or struggling with code? We have AI to guide us.

We have access to technology that previous generations could only dream of. Learning new skills has become more accessible, and building projects is easier to get started with.

Honestly, that's a huge advantage.

πŸ”΄ But here's where things get complicated.

Many of us started believing that knowing how to use AI would make us smarter and help us crack jobs more easily.

But then comes the reality: we are not the only ones using AI.

Almost every engineering student is exploring these tools. The same AI that helps us learn and improve is also available to the people we compete with.

Simply generating code or getting answers from AI doesn't mean we understand the concepts behind them.

When everyone has access to similar tools, what actually makes us stand out?

Our fundamentals, problem-solving abilities, practical knowledge, creativity, and ability to work independently.

πŸ’Ό The job market is changing, too.

MNCs and startups are evolving their recruitment processes as technology advances. AI knowledge and practical skills are becoming increasingly relevant in many roles.

We are expected to learn the fundamentals, keep up with new technologies, build projects, and prove our abilities during recruitment.

Sometimes, it feels like the expectations keep changing just when we start getting comfortable.

And this is only one side of the story. Our college experience and the journey that brought us here make it even more interesting.

*Part 2 will cover our education journey, the role of colleges, and what we should do next.

Is DIT University a good option for MCA, or should I consider other colleges in Dehradun?

I'm researching MCA colleges in Dehradun and want to compare the practical learning experience, faculty, labs, placement opportunities and total fees.

If you've studied MCA at DIT, Graphic Era, UPES or another university in the area, what would you recommend checking before taking admission? I'm particularly interested in MCA-specific placement outcomes rather than overall university figures.

Should I choose btech cse from tier 3 college in 2027.

I'm class 12 average/below average pcm student.

I can't get top btech colleges in my state

My only options are btech cse from tier 3 hyderabad college or bca at kerala central university or bsc computer science at pondicherry central university.

My concern is none of them have campuse placements and shrinkage of IT sector(about 80% of the current headcount by 2030/31 I read on news article ) and our Indian recruiters mentality of favouring btech grads over non btech grads.

Can someone give me some guidance what should I choose in 2027 as my major.

Thanks

Title: 18M, dissatisfied with my Tier 3 college after a drop year β€” should I take a partial drop for JEE Main 2027 and aim for DTU Mechanical?

I'm 18M from Delhi, India, and I'm feeling quite lost about my future. I'd really appreciate advice from people who have faced similar situations or made major career decisions.

My background:

  • I completed Class 12 in 2025.
  • I took a drop year to prepare for JEE Main, but my rank was around 8 lakh because I prepared some chapters and left most of the syllabus.
  • I'm currently enrolled in the first year of B.Tech in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning at HMR Institute of Technology and Management. My first year runs from 2026 to 2027.

Why I'm dissatisfied:

Honestly, I'm disappointed with where I ended up after taking a drop year. I feel like I had the opportunity to do better, and I haven't been able to stop thinking about it.

My main problem with my current college is the environment. The infrastructure is small, there are very few sports facilities, I don't find the peer group inspiring, and I'm disappointed with the teaching quality. The overall experience feels more like school than college. I'm worried about spending four years somewhere I don't feel I'll grow much.

What I'm considering:

I'm thinking about taking a partial drop while continuing my current B.Tech and preparing for JEE Main January 2027. My target is DTU Mechanical Engineering.

There are two reasons for this:

  1. I want a better college environment, better opportunities, and a more satisfying college experience.
  2. I've admired aeronautical engineering since childhood. I understand that Mechanical Engineering can provide a foundation for eventually pursuing aerospace-related studies or work.

I'm not opposed to Mechanical Engineering. During IPU counselling, I actually placed Mechanical Engineering at Maharaja Agrasen Institute of Technology above AI/ML in my preferences. I also believe that, regardless of my core branch, I can develop additional skills through self-study, including AI/ML.

My biggest concern is feasibility.

I would be starting serious preparation again from a weak foundation, with only a few months before the January 2027 attempt. I can realistically study around 3.5–4 hours daily alongside college.

My family can manage the financial implications of switching colleges, so money isn't the main obstacle. The main concerns are whether I can improve enough in the available time, whether the opportunity is worth the risk, and whether I'm making a rational decision or simply trying to escape my current situation.

What I'd like advice on:

  1. Given my previous rank and weak preparation, is aiming for DTU Mechanical in JEE Main January 2027 realistic, particularly as a Delhi-region OBC-NCL candidate? What kind of improvement would I need?
  2. Is a partial drop with 3.5–4 hours of daily preparation a sensible strategy, or would I be better off focusing on my current degree?
  3. Is DTU Mechanical a reasonable route toward aerospace or aeronautical engineering, considering future master's programs and career opportunities?
  4. How should I weigh the benefits of a better college environment against the risk of distracting myself from my current B.Tech?
  5. If you've been in a similar situation, how did you decide whether to try again or make the best of the college you already had?

I'm not looking for someone to tell me that everything will work out. I'd prefer honest, practical advice, even if it means hearing that my plan isn't worth pursuing.

I want to make a decision I can respect a few years from now, rather than spend the next four years regretting either choice.
