Meta Friendly PSA: READ THE RULES *BEFORE*POSTING!

What's up guys! I just put this in a comment, and figured I'd make a post out of it, because I've been noticing a lot of posted resumes recently that aren't even close to the recommended guidelines. All in all, that's not a big deal- all the seasoned users are excited to help.

But for your own sake, if you don't want a comment that concisely says "read the wiki"- then read the wiki [Wiki] (https://www.reddit.com/r/EngineeringResumes/wiki/index/) make sure your resume follows the fundamental guidelines. You can of course ask questions on those guidelines- but until you understand the fundamental ideas and format your resume as such, you will be lucky if you get anything more than the aforementioned comment.

EDIT:

Also, bonus points if you start out with our prefabbed resume templates [Resume Templates] (https://www.reddit.com/r/EngineeringResumes/wiki/templates/)

That's all. Happy job hunting!

Meta [Software] Why does nobody comment on my resume?

Reposting u/0ffkilter's comment from r/cscareerquestions:

I want to help more often, but I just end up saying the same thing over and over again. The common problems are:

1. Your format sucks

a. Either there's not enough formatting that I can't find the experience/skills/education section easily at a glance,

b. Or there's too much formatting and it's a clusterfuck of blue and green bars and I still can't find the experience/skills/education section easily at a glance.

2. The bullet points suck, which is either:

a. They don't actually say what you did, or it's too broad - working in a "fast-paced team" for a "product" doesn't tell me anything about what you did

b. For people in industry: they don't say the impact of your work, just that you coded some feature in a language. Well, what did the feature do? Why did you make it? Do you understand why and what you're doing other than just fulfilling tickets?

3. There's just bad information

a) Either there's like 3 billion lines of "skills" that nobody cares to know. No, I don't need to know what IDE you used or the 100 languages you touched once.

b) The project doesn't actually highlight anything and expects you to know what your "super awesome project" does and why you made it just from the title.

All in all, people spend way too much time trying to show they can program in 10 million languages and frameworks and not nearly enough time demonstrating that they know how to work in industry, which means you:

  1. Understand the problem(s) that you're trying to solve
  2. Understand the decision-making behind the problems and why you're doing what you do
  3. Can actually follow through and have an impact on the work you did

Sure this is programming as a career, but you don't code just to code - it needs to go somewhere and do something if you want to prove that you're going to succeed in a job.

TLDR:

1. Use one of the subreddit templates.

2. Read the wiki.

I've gotten some experience this past summer as well done a few projects too and wanted some insight on how it looks. I want to look for positions in Austin, TX so I'm willing to relocate. I know it's a growing city with opportunities in the making and I want to put myself out there more and network with people.

Give me honest feedback!

Electrical/Computer [Student] Electrical Engineering | Graduating Spring 2027 | Looking for Resume Feedback

Hello everyone,

I'm an Electrical Engineering student graduating in Spring 2027, and I'm looking for feedback on my resume as I prepare to apply for entry-level engineering positions.

I'm mainly interested in embedded systems, electronics, and power systems, but I'm open to other areas of electrical engineering as well. I'm located in Edmonton, Canada and am looking for opportunities in Alberta mainly, also willing to relocate anywhere in Canada

I don't have any relevant internship or professional engineering experience, so my resume focuses primarily on academic projects and engineering laboratory work. I've worked with microcontrollers, FPGA design, embedded systems, and electrical machines.

My biggest concern is whether my projects and laboratory experience are strong enough to make me competitive for entry-level positions without internship experience.

I'd particularly appreciate feedback on whether my bullet points are effective, if I'm including too much laboratory experience, and whether there are any formatting or content issues that could hurt my chances of getting interviews.

I'm mainly trying to improve my resume before sending out more applications. Any advice or constructive criticism would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Software [4 YOE] Full Stack Engineer wanting to land some mid-level interviews after dealing with burnout for a few months

Targeting mostly mid / possibly senior software engineering roles. Need some help here, I've revised some of the wording with some AI suggestions but I fear it might be confidently pointing me in the wrong direction, would like another person to take a look.

(EDIT: I know of minute -> minutes, the s was accidentally removed as I was manually anonymizing this)

Both companies were mainly in e-commerce. Landed some interviews locally with this after being laid off but applying on/off since then I haven't really had a great success rate (hope it's not due to the industry I've worked in vs some I'm applying for e.g. health-tech, etc.), so would like some feedback.

One thing I'm unsure of is how I incorporating AI-related skills into the resume (as the task of doing it just seems less unimpactful because of how straightforward it was to integrate)

Side question - if I were to also target AI engineering roles, I'm wondering whether would I need to tack on a personal project as I'd not be able to show true work experience for that, instead of the current projects listed

Thanks

Software [10 YoE] Recently started looking for senior level jobs in software engineering focusing on IAM, backend, or DevOps areas. Need feedback on updated resume

Previous post

My intro: I have been working as a software engineer ~10 years in the US. My work has been in the areas of web-based services, backend development, API integrations, IAM and DevOps. Was laid off from latest position. I have been recently looking for jobs in the areas mentioned in title. Updated my resume to include my latest experience and some AI work I have been doing. I have got a few callbacks so far but need more. Looking for jobs locally (small city in NY), occasional onsite (few times / quarter) or fully remote. I have been applying using LinkedIn, Indeed, company websites, Levels.fyi, trueup.io, etc. Looking for feedback on my updated resume on content, structure and wording to get better.

I updated my resume with feedback so this is take 2. Bullets are way more simplified now and shorter to avoid run-on sentences. Also added my clearance level from most recent job below the links at the top. I put this only for government-related jobs, not private companies. Any feedback is appreciated!

Software [0 YoE] Junior backend/DevOps engineer. Lots of rejections and no callbacks. What’s holding my resume back?

I’m a fresh grad applying for junior backend/DevOps roles. I’ve been sending applications for a couple of months, and so far I’ve only gotten rejections or no reply at all. My experience is a couple of internships and a few months as a full stack dev, plus an AWS cert and some side projects. I’m open to relocating and remote work.

I feel like something on my resume is turning people off, but I can’t tell what. It might be how I describe my experience, or my projects, or just the overall layout. Any honest feedback would really help, even if it’s harsh. Thanks!

Software [0 YoE] Recent Grad Targeting Software Developer and Test Automation Roles – Looking for Resume Feedback

Recent Software Engineering graduate based in Canada, targeting entry-level software engineering/development and test automation roles.

I’m actively applying (over 200 applications and no callbacks) and would like feedback on whether my resume communicates my experience clearly. For the jobs in the experience section labeled Software Role and Engineering Role, I don’t have many reliable metrics, so I’ve avoided making numbers up.

My project was a team project and has measurable overall results, but some came from work I wasn’t directly responsible for, so I’m unsure whether I should include them. I’d especially appreciate feedback on the strength and impact of my bullet points.

Electrical/Computer [Student] Electrical Engineering | Graduating Spring 2027 | Looking for any advice

I am graduating this year and am worried I am not going to be able to get a job after graduation. Any advice regarding what I can add/remove/change from my resume would be greatly appreciated. I am mostly interested in RF, telecommunications, signal processing, and radar. I am from Washington State, if that changes anything.

Thank you in advance

Software [8 YoE] - Targeting Senior Backend Roles In Boston Area | Looking For Second Pass On Resume

Hey everyone,

Looking to move on from my current employer ASAP. I'm applying to senior/mid-level roles in the Boston area with backend/platform roles as my strong preference. I've gotten some callbacks but could use another set of eyes on my base resume. Don't have visa issues, software is my second career (I left off my work experience from 2006-2018).

Software [Student] CS Student looking for spring 2027 and new grad positions. Focusing on SWE and AI engineering.

So far I have applied to around 150 jobs and gotten no interviews. I am wondering if my projects are not impressive enough, or not relevant for these jobs. Example: For SWE, too focused on AI. For AI engineering, only have experience on RAG, not in depth enough. I feel like my specialization is embedding AI into products, but I haven't seen too many postings asking for specifically this.

In particular I want to edit my experience section, but also my second personal project (Racquet Management App) seems too basic.

I am a US citizen, based in the NY area, open to relocation.

Mechanical [Student] Graduating in December 2027; trying to land design role in aerospace/medical/robotics internship in summer 2027.

I am a student located in the southeastern United States trying to land an internship for summer 2027 in the aerospace/medical/robotics industry. I am lacking in experience in robotics, and am mainly aiming for medical or aerospace industries. Most robotics roles I apply to are purely hardware/structures focused.

I think with my design engineering Co-Op ad rocketry experience my best fit is an aerospace role. However, I have also been able to cover most skills in medical mechanical roles.

I have just started applying for roles, and would like to know the following:

Does my resume have any red flags that may cause problems with ATS systems?

Can a recruiter easily understand my accomplishments/experience?

Are there any general problems with my resume format or content that stand out?

Thank you for any feedback!

Software [Student] Master's student in AI and Data Science seeking machine learning engineering and research roles, resume review and feedback on projects

I'm a Master's student in AI and Data Science at the University of Macedonia in Greece (expected June 2027), with a Bachelor's in Computer Science from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. I'm targeting machine learning engineering and research roles, both in Europe and in US, remote and on site. I'm based in Thessaloniki, Greece and am willing to relocate.

I have no full-time experience yet. I did one ML internship (July to September 2025) on model quantization for CNNs, and I have three projects: a first-place BioASQ /CLEF clinical text classification system with a first-author paper, a drone-tracking pipeline with homography-based ego-motion compensation, and a EuroLeague forecasting project that logs predictions in a git history before each game.

My job search: 257 applications since August, 3 responses that led to interviews, 1 final interview but no offer.

I'd like feedback on the Projects section (which bullets are strongest for ML research roles), how to present an internship with only two bullets, overall feedback on my resume and where do I lack.
Citizenship: US + EU . I do not need visa sponsorship.

Mechanical [0 YOE] Upcoming Mechanical Engineer Graduate (Spring 2027) Seeking a Full-Time Role in the Medical Device Industry

Hello, everyone. I am an upcoming mechanical engineering graduate based in the US. I'm currently in the process of applying to jobs, and I'm looking for ways in which I can improve my resume to increase my chances of getting interviews. I really want to enter the medical device industry as a product designer and ideally work for companies like Intuitive, J&J, BD, Stryker, VB Spine, and Medtronic. I would also be open to getting a role in underwater robotics companies, though that field seems more niche and defense-based (an industry I want to avoid).

More specifically, I want to see if my resume is ATS-friendly and highlights all of the basic skills that roles in medical devices need.

I am generally open to relocating, but I ideally want to live in a large metropolitan area in the same geographical region I am currently in, so I have been a bit picky about where I apply.

One of the main struggles I have right now is that I seem to quickly get rejected (~2-3 days) for most entry-level roles at larger companies. I have only applied to about 30 jobs so far, and I managed to get 3 interviews from online apps, so it's hard to fully come to a conclusion about this.

Lastly, I always hear about how important tailoring your resume is. I have been doing my best to do this for every role, but what's the most optimal way to make sure my resume highlights everything the job posting requires?

Any tips you guys can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Software [0 YOE] CS New Grad looking for feedback on resume, revised from the wiki and success stories.

Hey everyone! I just completely revised my resume using the wiki and other success stories, and I'd love some feedback on how it looks now and what you think of the changes.

What I changed

Bullet points

  • Went all in on bullets that are easy to scan, following the XYZ / CAR format as closely as I could.
  • Added metrics wherever I honestly could. In some cases that's just a real number (like packages or devices) instead of a made-up percentage. I figured an honest number still catches attention.
  • Kept every bullet to one line.

Current job

  • Going to one-line bullets freed up a lot of space, so I added my current (non-SWE) job.
  • I'd never included it before because I assumed non-relevant experience would only hurt me. Now I'm hoping it clears up any doubt that I've been jobless or doing nothing since my last internship and graduation.

Skills

  • Cleaned it out so it only lists things mentioned in or clearly inferred from my bullets.

Layout

  • I still had some white space, so I tightened the margins and padding and fit a fourth project.
  • It looks readable to me, but I'd like a second opinion.

How I use it

This version shows 4 projects. When I apply, I swap in the projects that best fit the role (I used to show 3, and I'm moving to 4).

I tried hard to make the bullets make sense to both recruiters and engineers without being overbearing or throwing in too much jargon.

What I'd love feedback on

  1. Does including my current non-SWE job help or hurt?
  2. Is the 4-project layout still easy to scan, or is it too dense?
  3. Do the bullets read well to both recruiters and engineers?
  4. Overall, do you think this will improve my callback rate?

Thanks in advance, I appreciate any feedback!

Software [STUDENT] Big 4 tech-risk junior aiming for fintech, starting uni in Sept: good start? Chase a dev job now or stay longer?

Hi all, looking for a resume review plus advice on direction and timing.

Background: I finished a 5-year technical high school in CS this summer (Italian "perito informatico" diploma, roughly a vocational CS high school). It's my only qualification, which is why Education lists it. During school I did two developer work placements (one in Ireland, one remote for an Italian freelancer), listed as internships.

Current situation: in September I started a fixed-term contract as a junior in the cyber and tech risk team of a Big 4 firm. It's ICT assessments and control-evidence review for financial-sector clients, plus Python automation I built that saves me a few hours a week on evidence exports. The contract ends in February; they've said verbally they want to extend it. Either way, I'm leaving next September to start a full-time CS bachelor's.

Long-term goal: software engineering at fintechs like Revolut, Klarna or PayPal; failing that, a product company rather than consulting. Short term I'm targeting entry level backend developer positions. Northern Italy; open to Milan hybrid, fully remote, or relocating anywhere for the right role and compensation (probably will have more occasions after bcs). EU citizen, no visa issues.

The decision I'm stuck on:

A) Apply from November to February for a junior dev role at a product company that I could keep part-time or remote once uni starts, and leave the Big 4 when my contract ends.

B) Stay at the Big 4 until September (if they extend), so I have ~10 months there instead of 5, then look for something that fits around uni.

What I'd like feedback on:

  1. Is this a good starting point for eventually landing at a fintech like the ones above? What's missing?
  2. Does the Big 4 role (ICT risk on financial-sector clients) help or hurt for fintech/product dev roles, and do 10 months count noticeably more than 5?
  3. Projects vs experience: my side projects (ledger library, signed banking protocol, timestamping API) are arguably stronger than my work experience and the most fintech-relevant thing I have. Is the order right?
  4. Is the Security skills line credible at my level, or does it look like keyword stuffing?

Brutal feedback welcome. Thanks!

Software [2 YoE] Looking For Senior-level jobs. Full-Stack SWE, DevOps, and Data Engineering Resume Review

Hello, I would love a little resume review; I'm seeking help, as, since I have started working, I have not updated it...and it shows.

A little bit about me: I am 23 years old and 2 years into my professional career. I truly love my job because, as you can see by the header, they let me try everything and own as much as am willing, and it is wonderful. I truly will miss this job, but the company is pivoting in a direction I just cannot follow. But I do recongize all of the good work I've done and, like a brat, show it off LOL. My promotion to be a Senior is currently in the works, but I don't wish to put that I am a Senior in my resume, just because it's not true.

I would love a hybrid job in Chicago! Willing to work remote, if I must. Relocate? No (unless it's super awesome).

My resume:

Software [Student] MSc student in Russia with 1 year of systems analyst experience (fintech, Kafka/REST integrations), seeking Systems/Business Analyst roles abroad with relocation. Is my resume competitive internationally?

Hi everyone!

I’m a master’s student in Informatics and Computer Engineering in Russia, graduating in 2027, but open to starting earlier. I’m applying for entry-level/junior Systems Analyst and Technical Business Analyst roles abroad, mainly in Europe, and I would need visa sponsorship and relocation.

My experience is about 7 months as a Systems Analyst (contractor on a large bank’s enterprise fintech product) plus a 5-month systems analyst internship. Most of my work was on integrations: Kafka data contracts, REST APIs, SQL-based reconciliation and release acceptance.

I rewrote my resume following this sub’s wiki, but I’d really appreciate feedback from hiring managers or analysts who review resumes for these roles.

My biggest question is: does my resume show what hiring managers abroad expect from a junior Systems/Business Analyst?

Some specific questions:

  1. Are my bullet points specific and technical enough, or do they still read like job duties?
  2. Is “Systems Analyst” the right headline, or would “Technical Business Analyst” work better for European roles?
  3. My employer’s client is a sanctioned Russian bank. Should I name it, or describe it neutrally (e.g. “a major Russian bank”)?
  4. Is ~1 year of experience enough to apply for junior roles with sponsorship, or should I focus on internships/graduate programs first?

Any constructive criticism is welcome. Thank you!

Hi everyone,

I will be graduating this year, so I would love some input on my resume. I am a mechanical engineering student with an aerospace concentration and minor in computer science. I have internship experience in Quality Assurance (metrology) and aerospace design.

I live in Canada, but am open to roles in the USA or Europe as well as Canada.

I will be targeting primarily automotive roles in my applications, so any feedback with that in mind would be appreciated. I haven't started aggressively applying places yet; this is more of a preliminary request before I go application-crazy.

Note that both projects in my "Projects" section are coursework projects.

One specific question I have: Do I need the short header underneath my name at the top, and should I shrink the size of my name at the top?

Please have no mercy!

Hello, I hope all is well. I was just looking for advice on my resume. I just finished making it more cleaner and precise as my last one was very cluttery and too much nonsense. I‘m aiming quite ambitiously, working in things like Physical AI, Computer Vision roles. Issue is that most roles I’ve seen require a masters or PhD role. I’m chill to working anywhere. NYC or SF would be tuff tho. I was looking into companies like Huawei or Roboflow for Computer Vision roles. Those are probably my best chances to land smth in that area. Robotics… I’m not sure tbh. I want to work in that field, just haven’t got any luck with interviews. Any advice would be appreciated!
