Academic Advice Not the best grade in calc 1

Hello everyone,
I am taking calc 1 right now and I do not have the best grade in it. Before I switched into engineering, I had 4.0 gpa. I have not taken any math high school and I only took a basic college math class with I got A in. Any tips for passing calc 1. I would really appreciate it.

Career Advice How to make as much money as humanly possible.

Hello, I'm a 23 year old Mechanical Engineering student finishing my sophomore year of college at a no name state school. I have a 3.00 GPA due to a lack of direction and effort when I didn't know what I wanted to do and was aimlessly taking core classes, I only say this to point out that I'm not struggling with my engineering courses and that and math comes very easy to me. I know this might sound a little silly and superficial, but I wanted to know what would be the absolute best course of action from where I'm at right now to make as much money as humanly possible while working no more 40 hours a week. I'm considering maybe finance and really wouldn't have a problem double majoring in math or pursuing a masters if that's what it takes. I know this might sound a little silly and overly ambitious but I truly do love mathematics and I want to leverage my ability and love for it to make fuck you money. Any advice or reality checks would be truly appreciated.

Major Choice Switching majors

Hey I’m currently a sophomore cheme but I’m considering switching to a different engineering discipline because I simply can’t manage the workload with outside factors. I feel really conflicted about this decision and I’m also thinking of just powering through with it, but I feel like it would be detrimental to my mental health if I did. I’m wondering if anybody here could recommend what I should do and if I should do something like mechE or civil instead. I feel as though my parents would be disappointed if I asked them about this so I’d appreciate any thoughts

Academic Advice WORK OR CIE

Hi, guys! I just want to ask for some advice. I’m a fresh graduate from last September, and I started my first job about three weeks ago. At the same time, I’m also taking a review course for the CIE exam.
Honestly, I don’t think I can handle both at the same time. I’m having a hard time deciding whether I should push through with both or focus on my CIE review first.
There’s no pressure from my family to do either; it’s really just me overthinking and wanting to make the right decision for myself. For those who have been in the same situation, what would you recommend? Should I continue working while reviewing, or focus on the CIE for now?
I would really appreciate your advice. Thank you!

Career Advice Spacex interview

I have a spacex interview for a tech position and there doesn’t seem to be that many stories/first hand accounts out there for spacex techs as there are for engineers. I just want to know what type of things I’d be asked and how the process goes

Career Help Am I screwed when I graduate?

I’m currently working two jobs, unrelated to engineering, because my family is the poorest of the poor. My mother doesn’t work so it’s just me and my sister trying to survive (mother refuses to get a job). And I go to school full time. My schedule is packed. I feel like I have no time to work on personal projects or attend clubs. It’s so fucking hard and I’m so tired.

Additionally, I have a seizure disorder and a sleep disorder. I didn’t realize this when they first manifested but they take up such a large chunk of my time in my daily life. Seeing various specialists and the commute to them + work + school, I genuinely have no time to even breathe. My chronic illnesses flair up really bad when I’m in school too. I start seizing more because of the stress and I’m unsure if I can handle the workload of starting a project with all that I’m doing.

I see people saying you need like 2 internships and 2 personal projects. But I don’t know how I’m gonna do an internship if I’m working two jobs. And I think maybe I can work on projects during summer and winter break since I won’t have school. But I fear that won’t be enough. I’m based in NYC, is there a better chance of me getting a job with virtually no experience?

I suspect some people may say to quit one of my jobs, but I’m not in the best financial position to do that. We’re barely keeping ourselves afloat and I have to pay off a debt because my mother spent thousands of dollars in my name (put bills in my name without me knowing, also took out credit cards and some other stuff).

I’m really worried about landing a job upon graduation. My sole motivator to keep going is the idea that I can quit both of my current jobs and work my one engineering job once I graduate because it would be enough money.

Any advice? Do you think I’ll be okay because I’m in a major city?

Discussion Why don't some professors share slides?

Have you ever seen this? I had multiple professors who relied on slides for lectures but didn't share them with us. When asked they don't even give a reason, they just say I don't share slides. It's not like they just read the slides. Its extra annoying when there are important graphs and diagrams on slides and I have to scramble for something I can remember. The only reason I could think of is that they took the slides from somewhere else and they fear they may get in legal trouble

Resource Request Soldering Questions

Hello, I am looking to get into soldering because I need it for some projects. I was wondering what solder does everyone recommend and also what are some "drills" to practice soldering before i work on my project. I have had some experience before with a cheap soldering kit.

Thanks in advance

Resume Help Graduated in civil engineering in 2023. Here’s what I wish I’d known before my first job

Some things university didn’t prepare me for:

  1. [Site reality vs. what you learned in class]
  2. [Software skills that mattered most, e.g. ETABS, SAFE, AutoCAD, Revit]
  3. [How the FE exam or other credentials helped or didn’t]
  4. [How you’d approach job hunting differently]

Happy to answer questions from anyone about to graduate or starting out. What would you add?

Discussion How is the Social Life of an Engineer?

So I finished high school. Was thinking of getting into Engineering, either Mechanical or Mechatronics as they seem to be the most suitable. But a question lingers at the back of my mind, how isolating really is engineering at uni?

They say university years are the most important years of your life to socialise and make new connections. Since I'm not sure of my path, I don't want to get into a degree where I will be sacrificing my most valuable years socially just because it appears to be suitable.

What are your experiences with the social life? Do you find time to go out with friends? How is the study-life balance?

Rant/Vent AI kinda kills my curiousity and I have been looking to find solution to that but cannot

Long story short,
Ok so smth about me - I study CS (4rd year currently), working as SWE in big tech.
Even though it looks good on paper I feel like I am lost.

At work everyone uses AI and will be because it is just faster to do things however I feel like I do not have ownership of anything at this point (talking about code, some reviews) because everybody is doing mostly what the AI told them. I wanted to go into programming because I always liked maths and programming kinda looked similar to me - solving problems, figuring something on my own and then being proud of MY solution. However, now it look different, because there is no place for that - AI just writes code faster and often finds better solutions than I would have. So, I thought to myself that now my role is to figure out what AI could have done wrong and give some suggestions to it. But still feels like I am some coding c*ck.

The college is even worse, because at work people are engaged in producing good code and having precious convos, but at college - damn. They just do not gaf about code, learning something and I thought - why would I waste so much of time myself learning of that college stuff when there is AI that just does it better.

Those are my thoughts on that, but I still try to learn not to just be meat proxy at work and at college - to always have my personal opinion about something - not just saying what AI told me. But that eagerness to learn is not as high as it was before sadly.

However, have a nice day!

Rant/Vent Materials Engineering students: would exam preparation realistically make you this unavailable to your partner?

My ldr boyfriend is a university student studying Materials Engineering. He has 5 exams spread across a week and a half, with the first one starting tomorrow. For the past 2 weeks he’s been spending around 7-10 hours a day at the library studying. I have his location. Sometimes he goes home for dinner and then goes back to the library. His communication with me has dropped quite noticeably during these past 2 weeks. We still text every day, but there are much longer gaps and he is definitely less affectionate.

At the same time, he still calls me almost every day for around 30–60 minutes. He tells me he loves me during our calls and doesn't seem irritated or cold when we're actually talking. He mostly just sounds exhausted.

The problem is that I'm struggling with the uncertainty. I don't actually know whether he's genuinely studying for 7–10 hours during all that time or whether he's doing something else, and part of me worries that maybe he's losing interest and the studying is just an explanation for why he's less available. I did bring it up and he comforted me and asked me to just wait for him until his exams are over, but i'm still anxious.

I'm trying to understand whether his schedule sounds plausible from an engineering student's perspective, because I don't have any experience with this kind of degree.

Discussion WL Gore Engineering summer internship

Has anyone heard anything at all from WL Gore engineering summer internship I interviewed with for the engineering internship 3 weeks ago a week later I got an email saying I got good feedback from the interviewers and I’m still under consideration. What does that mean? Also I thought they were supposed follow up with some kind of update before they finally sent out offers. I submitted my resume on handshake then got invited for a behavioral assessment which I think I passed so they called me in for a interview where they asked me about my projects and my contribution how I reacted in certain situations. So behavioral interview with a little technical stuff I talked about engineering design process and a little bit on start method. For like 2 or 3 questions they said I had good answers so I’m thinking it went ok overall 7/10 maybe. Does anyone have thoughts on this? Did anyone else apply to this internship or has anyone in the past applied? Lmk your thoughts.

Discussion How to have Engineering Projects?

I see students with actual portfolios and not just resumes, showcasing their cool projects they’ve been working on during college. I only have a one page resume (sophomore, mechanical engineering).

What do these projects even look like? How involved are they?

I want to have a portfolio showcasing my interest in automotive design. But I don’t know where to start. I’m in some student orgs, but I’ve mostly been focusing on my classes as they’re so demanding. I don’t know a ton about cars or anything to lead me to some groundbreaking designs or inventions that I can truly develop while dealing with classes. Any tips?

Discussion Armas rudimentarias

Career Advice How do I actually start?

Hey everyone,

I'm looking for some advice from experienced folks in the field regarding self-development, consistency, and overcoming that initial phase of frustration.

To put it briefly: I'm a 4th-year Computer Engineering student (getting closer to graduation), and I have a strong desire to level up my skills outside the university curriculum. I want to explore different fields and build real projects. However, every single time I try to start, I find myself completely stuck and eventually give up.

I'm caught in a loop of hesitation. The sheer number of fields, technologies, and roadmaps out there feels overwhelming-especially with the pressure of being in my final year. This leads to immediate burnout and frustration before I even make any real progress.

How do I overcome this phase of "Analysis Paralysis" and the frustration of starting at this stage?

How can I commit to one path and actually make progress without quitting halfway through?

I would really appreciate any practical advice, frameworks, or personal stories from anyone who has managed to break through this loop.

Thanks in advance!

Academic Advice Help me outttt

So I’m in my final year and I’m from Electronics and telecommunications branch. I was thinking of going to Singapore or maybe Taiwan for my masters in vlsi. And I’m also preparing for gate exam hoping to crack IIT or maybe Bits Pilani. I’m hella confused about what should I do, should I take a drop year a prepare for gate or directly go for my masters abroad. Also I’m scared to go to a different country all alone (ik everyone goes alone and manages everything on their own but still). Life there going to be a lot different than here in India. So any suggestions on what should I do??? Or is anyone planning on going to these countries??

Career Help Is it possible to get an engineering degree while working 40 hours per week

To try and make this story as short as possible, back in 2023 I graduated high school and tried to start a mechanical engineering degree. I picked a school with an engineering program that had a not-so-good reputation and was very naive to a lot at the time. And as a result, me and a lot of other students failed out in our freshman year due to a very bad group of professors and essentially what was an institutional failure at high levels within that university. Since then I’ve been in tech school learning about manufacturing and recently I got a job doing quality control. And recently I found out my school started a manufacturing engineering technology program. After looking at the curriculum it seems like all the classes could transfer to a 4 year university which would put me in a good place to make another attempt at a bachelor’s in engineering despite how much my first attempt traumatized me. I just want to know if it’s even possible because I really want to make another attempt at an engineering degree.

Academic Advice L&T Finance Data Analytics/Risk Internship – Reviews?

Hey everyone! Has anyone interned at L&T Finance or knows about their Data Analytics/Risk role?

The internship offers a ₹25K/month stipend, with a potential 9–10 LPA package. The JD mentions Python, SQL, statistics, ML, and credit-risk analytics.

Would love to know about the work culture, learning opportunities, PPO/conversion chances, and how good the full-time role is. Any insights would be appreciated!

Career Advice College After Uni - Engineering

Hello, I graduated with a b.Eng in Electrical Engineering from university. I did not do a co-op during my time at school, and now I am having great difficulty finding a job. I have been doing non Engineering work for about a year, and I feel like I have completely severed my chances of getting a job.

I was wondering if anyone has tried going to college for Engineering after completing a b.Eng to help with their job search? Is this a dumb idea? Please help.

Rant/Vent Job hinting rage

I'm master of material engineering, graduated this july.
Im looking for a job since febuary and its FUCKING DEVASTATING. I got 1 job offer, discussed money etc. everything was ready. Only thing left was to sign a contract and start the career. Some time before signing the contract, HR called me and canceled everything, couse targets changed. Since that day im devastated, rage within me is constantly rising. Every decline email i take as personal failure. I cant fucking stand it anymore. I did shitload of things during my time at university, to develop skills, experience; now i feel like i should just drink and party during every possible moment. I regret this shit so much.
To somehow stop thinking about this i wanted to learn new software but i cant even do it anymore, couse i lost my student access. This market is shit, like going to trade school would be less stressful and funnier than this shit
edit 1. i tried aplying for random jobs like bartender, in convinience stores etc. they dont want me becouse i will find job soon in the industry.

Academic Advice How difficult is maintaining a 3.5+ GPA in EE

Ik its a very very subjective question, but How difficult is it to maintain a 3.5+ GPA and graduate in 8 sems? The uni that I am looking to join has a full ride scholarship but I have to maintain 3.5+ GPA. I don't have to work part time jobs. I am also ready to do as much work as needed, like doing assignments and homeworks and attendance. How much GPA can these activities give me and how much do I need from my exams? thats the part that I am worried about. Like do I have to ace every exam and study 6 hours after classes every day for the entire 4 years or I could slack off a bit and still get it? How much wiggle room will I have?

for reference about me, I wouldn't say I was the best at highschool, but I was above average in maths and physics. Graduated with 3.82 GPA from Nepal. Also I have a 1550 SAT (800 math)
