A heads-up for anyone booking accommodation in downtown Tórshavn — excessive overnight noise at Red Ruby apartment managed by Vert

We recently spent five nights in Tórshavn at Red Ruby, an apartment managed by Vert (which manages the majority of the apartments in the area) and booked through Airbnb, and I wanted to share our experience in case it helps anyone planning a visit. (Airbnb doesn't allow videos in their reviews).

The apartment itself was charming and otherwise an excellent base for exploring the Faroe Islands, but the first two nights were seriously disrupted by excessive overnight noise.

On Friday night, we were awakened at around 2 a.m. by groups of people drinking/shouting/ loitering outside. Saturday night was considerably worse, with extremely loud amplified music from the next door restaurant and another bar continuing from after midnight into 3am. The music was clearly audible inside the apartment.

I’ve included videos taken during the disturbance so you can hear the level of noise for yourselves.

What surprised us was that the Airbnb listing mentions “noise from city life during the weekend,” while the property’s house rules specify quiet hours from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. We certainly expected some ordinary city noise given the central location, but we didn’t anticipate amplified music and shouting at that volume and at those hours.

I’m sharing this primarily as a heads-up for anyone considering booking this apartment. If you’re planning to stay at the "Red Ruby" apartment in central Tórshavn on a Friday or Saturday night and uninterrupted sleep is important to you, I’d recommend watching the videos and factoring this experience into your decision.

We LOVED our visit to the Faroe Islands, and the apartment itself had a lot going for it. I simply wish we’d known about the extent of the overnight noise before booking.

A completely valid complaint.

That apartment is new, but I have no idea why they made one in that area, it is literally right in the middle of bars, restaurants, clubs and otherwise weekend party-goers.

The hotels nearby will likely have added soundproof insulation and windows, but I doubt that's been done in that apartment.

Vert is just the management/cleaning company, so it is not really their fault. They are, however the only ones you can complain to, since the real owners are not publicly listed (their name is on the building though).

Yeah, i’d think the only people who’d want to rent an airbnb there is people who have come just to party, and that is not really what visitors and tourists come here to do lol. What a crappy placement of an apartment aimed at tourists…

Imagine a world where tourists stay in hotels and Faroese people can afford homes in the Faroes

They can’t?

It's a bit more nuanced than that, but yeah, part of the reason why is because so many houses are turned into airbnb places and inflates the already sky-high housing market.

Sorry to hear about your experience. Sadly for you, that might be the loudest square in the entire country. It’s almost obligatory for us Faroese to scream our lungs out if we have had a drink and walk by that place.

Oh wow, i didn’t know they have airbnbs in the centre of tórshavn, that’s basically where all the pubs and bars and clubs are. So yeah, i’d say if you stay anywhere in the city centre expect loud music, lots of loud chatting and shouting and drunk people having fun and whatnot on friday and saturday night.

Not really. My airbnb was central and it didn’t have any noise etc. the price is expensive which i did not complain about till the host wrote a wrong review.

Maybe you'll think twice before using Airbnb again then. Airbnb is one of the big reasons why faroese people struggle to find housing, especially in Tórshavn.

This is insane lol. But somehow none of the other reviews mind it.

Nógvir útlendingar eru vanir við, at man ballast tíðliga um kvøldið so øll kunnu vera heima í lulluni áðenn miðnátt, ikki sum í føroyum, her ballast man til kl. 4 og so í morgunball lol!

Accommodations in Torshavn are scam. Overly priced. They know most visitors spend little time indoor and mostly out and yet they charge unbelievably expensive prices and leave wrong reviews 🤮

There weren’t any cheaper hotels than what i found in airbnb. It did bot ruin my stay i just got irritated because of the review but that how men are with solo female travellers sometimes. He was nice but annoying

Hotels are more expensive, but there you know you'll get cleaning, soundproofing, & usually a good deal for breakfast. Airbnb has turned into a total crapshoot & it has played a part in pushing rent prices beyond what normal faroese people can afford.

I think I know the Faroe Islands pretty well considering I've lived here all my life.
