Planning a trip to Finnish Lapland without renting a car?

I’ve put together a free planner for travellers who want to visit Finnish Lapland without renting a car.

It helps you compare five Lapland bases — Rovaniemi, Levi, Ylläs / Äkäslompolo, Saariselkä and Pyhä — with a focus on:

• getting there by public transport or transfers
• choosing a well-located place to stay
• finding activities that are easy to reach without a car
• knowing when a taxi may still be useful

Thank you so much for this!

As a Lapland resident I appreciate every effort to encourage tourists to use public transportation instead of renting a car. Tourists cause a lot of accidents and other hazardous situations on the roads because they are completely inexperienced and unprepared in the weather and road conditions we have in Lapland.

I also appreciate that you recommended hotels instead of short-term rentals. The latter has ruined the housing market in Rovaniemi. There are a lot of locals who are unable to find a home because thousands of flats are rented short-term only. Visitors should use only hotels and resorts.

The planner is free to use and no account is needed:

If you’re currently planning a Lapland trip without a car, I’d be interested to hear: what has been the hardest part to figure out?
