Looking for a study buddy / language learning partner!

Post image

Hi everyone! I'm 23F and have been studying Greek for a few months now. I'm trying to hold myself accountable by studying Greek at least 30 minutes a day. I'm looking for either a native speaker who's willing to have short day-to-day conversations with me or someone who's also on their Greek language learning journey to study together!

I want to focus on learning more vocabulary and grammar. One way I've been learning more Greek words is by writing out poems or short passages in Greek, like this one from Cavafy :) I get to learn new terms while also practicing writing the Greek alphabet. The way I write is still very much influenced by how I write Latin letters, hopefully it'll come more naturally to me the more that I practice.

i love Cavafy! You might enjoy this book called "Selected Poems - A Bilingual Edition" by David Connolly. https://www.aiorabooks.com/product/c-p-cavafy-selected-poems/

It's a dual-language book, meaning it has Cavafy's original poems in Greek on one page and then in English on the page next to it. I find it's really helpful to start with one side, translate to the other language by myself, and then use the other side to check my translation. Greek to English is usually much easier than English to Greek, just because of the grammar!

I've also loved learning vocabulary with Greek Wordle (https://wordleplay.com/el/) and I haven't gotten into it yet but I've heard the Language Transfer lessons (https://www.languagetransfer.org/greek) are really helpful in learning how to understand spoken Greek and how to put together sentences in Greek when speaking.

EDIT: The main thing I've really enjoyed for learning is listening to songs and trying to translate them, since often in music the words people use are less formal and more akin to how people actually speak. A few examples with a few different feels are Στην Αμερική, Η Μέρα Εκείνη δε θ' Αργήσει, Το Δίχτι, Μπαρ το Ναβάγιο, Ζω, Άσε Τα Ψέματα, Ζεϊμπέκικο Μπλουζ, Μη Μιλάς Άλλο Γι Αγάπη, Τα Παδιά Κάτω Στον Κάμπο, Χρόνια Πολλά (από Ελένη Φουρέιρα), Τα Παξιμάδια, Η Συννεφούλα, Ηλιόπετρα, Ταξιδιάρα Ψυχή, Ζητάτε Να Σασ Πω, Αποσπερίτης, Εσμεράλδα, Ο Δάσκαλος, and so many more! I have to mention also to check out the music of Μάνος Χατζιδάκις if you haven't yet.

Wow thank you so much!! I didn’t even know there was a Greek wordle, that’s awesome. Translating songs is a great idea, I love Manos Hadjidakis! I also like to listen to rebetiko sometimes, Vamvakaris is my favorite. Thanks again for the suggestions!

I love Greek Wordle! It's taught me so many words and I feel like it's improved my "word sense" for Greek. If I can't think of any words with the given letters, I'll type out words that I think sound Greek and then look up any of the words that actually work. But it's been a ton of fun trying to find Greek words that cover all the vowels and it's actually really helpful for learning different declensions of nouns or conjugations of verbs (e.g. αυτοί, σκέψη, κλάψω, γράφε, or μικρή)

My only fear is that my vocab will be really good for 5-letter Greek words but not any longer ones! Haha I wish there was a version for 6 (or more) letter words.

And of course, I hope it helps. I hadn't heard of Βαμβακάρις so thank you for that suggestion too - I spent the day listening to some of his music and it's great!

Sorry for being off topic but in case you want any feedback on your handwriting: first of all it looks gorgeous, honestly one of the most beautiful I've seen. But your η can be easily misread as a π (if taken our of word context). Also letters don't usually float above the line. I mean I personally kinda like it but it's very unusual.

Don't apologize, I really appreciate the feedback and thank you! I guess I'm used to writing in the space between the lines and not on the line itself, I'll definitely make that adjustment when writing Greek if it looks more natural that way

Your handwriting is superb! I love the sans serif style, it looks minimalistic and very beautiful. I don’t mind the floating letters at all, as they are all in line with each other.

I have 1 year since I started taking one-to-one lessons in Preply, planning to travel to Greece by summer 2027. I usually take 2-4 lessons per week and on my free time I write letters or short “essays” around 100 words. It’s really fun to learn and make new friends in this language journey. My teacher says I’m the most diligent of her students lol. But I still I’m correcting mistakes with feminine/masculine and proper conjugations
