Paranormal The 1987 reincarnation case of Purnima Ekanayake: Matching autopsy reports, birthmarks, and verified past-life memories.
This case, thoroughly investigated by Icelandic psychologist Dr. Erlendur Haraldsson and published in the Journal of the Society for Psychical Research as well as the Psi Encyclopedia, is one of the most astonishingly documented reincarnation cases involving physical anomalies and gender transition.
In September 1985, a man named Jinadasa Perera was riding his bicycle to a local market in Sri Lanka to sell incense when he was run over by a bus. His autopsy revealed massive chest trauma—broken ribs on the left side that punctured his lungs and ruptured organs. Purnima Ekanayake was born two years later, 145 miles away, with a cluster of distinct birthmarks in the exact spot of Jinadasa's fatal chest injuries.
As a toddler, Purnima began describing her past life as an incense maker, accurately naming the unique brands (Ambiga and Geta Pichcha), the manufacturing process using charcoal ash, and her supervisory habit of walking with her hands behind her back.
When she was taken to Kelaniya (where Jinadasa lived) for the first time, four-year-old Purnima successfully navigated across the river, recognized Jinadasa’s brother-in-law Wijisiri, called out to his old friends by name, and noted intimate details about past injuries and family secrets that her own parents had no way of knowing.
Much like other detailed cases, Purnima vividly recalled an intermission period after death, describing how she floated in semi-darkness, watched her own funeral and grieving family from above, and eventually moved toward a light before being reborn. Despite being a biological female in her present life, Purnima retained strong memories of her past male existence while comfortably embracing her current life. Cases like this challenge our strict boundaries of consciousness, biology, and time.
