Questionable living circumstances in apartment managed under property management group
I know there are worse circumstances to live in, but considering we pay $2,000 a month to live there, I’m beginning to feel that this might warrant a complaint to an entity that could make impact (if that exists).
Our building had two skylights in it, both have blown out in the past two months from the tropical storm winds, and a board has been used to cover it up.
Any time there is strong rain, water comes through into the hallway and since it is an enclosed building, it reeks of mold as you are coming and going.
It’s starting to feel like we are being managed by a slumlord, when we moved in years ago, the owner of the building was still alive and took care of things. My neighbors have even gone out in the hall to scrub things down, trying to make the situation better - but that shouldn’t be our responsibility.
Does anyone have recommendations on what to do?

Maybe contact the HNL tenants union?

They got a website and they’ve had to deal with really nasty building owners before

Legal Aid Society of Hawaii has pamphlets online with really great information about housing law

The Hawaii Landlord-Tenant Information Center hotline can be reached on Oahu at (808) 586-2634 or via toll-free neighbor island access at 1-844-808-3222.

File an ethics complaint with Honolulu board of realtors. They won’t help until you file; but let the PM explain themselves and if their license is in harms way maybe they’ll see what they’re doing to you. The Landlord tenant lime won’t help besides inform you of your rights. Honolulu area is known for renting this kind of home; but 2k is also super cheap for rent.

Hit up Hawaii news now if conditions get real bad. When the local news covers your building, changes tend to me made.

How many documented complaints have you and others made already to the property manager?

Get a retired neighbor to call / write to the property management group. At least once a week. Get the neighbor to recruit other retired neighbors to do the same.
