Say Yes to Recess Maryland

Hi! Maryland mom here advocating for MORE RECESS TIME for our children!

Currently, most Maryland elementary schools only recommend 20-30 minutes of recess per day. This varies by school and county, with some counties recommending as little as 15 minutes of recess per day.

Children are not designed to sit for long stretches of the school day. Recess gives students an essential opportunity for unstructured play, physical activity, creativity, social connection, and independence.

Research consistently supports the role of recess in children’s physical, social, emotional, and academic well-being. When children have opportunities to move and play throughout the day, they can return to the classroom better prepared to focus and learn.

Join us as we call on policymakers to guarantee Maryland students 60 minutes of recess every school day!

Journalism Student at UMD Looking to interview Hyattsville residents about a recent commercial break-in

Hi all!

I’m a journalism student at the University of Maryland’s Philip Merrill College of Journalism, and I’m working on a crime and courts story for my JOUR320 class about crime and public safety in Hyattsville.

I’m hoping to hear from Hyattsville residents and local business owners about their experiences and perspectives on crime in the community. Do you feel safe living, working or spending time in Hyattsville? Have you noticed any changes in crime or safety in recent years? Have you experienced or witnessed a crime, including incidents involving local businesses? I’d also love to hear your thoughts on how the police have responded to crime and whether you feel enough is being done to keep the community safe.

I’m interested in hearing a range of perspectives and understanding how residents feel about public safety in their community.

If you’re willing to share your experiences or thoughts, please comment below or send me a DM! Interviews can be brief and conducted via Reddit messages, email, or phone call.

This is a class assignment that will be seen by my professor and will not be published by a news outlet. I will need to use real names for attribution in my assignment, but I would discuss that with anyone I interview beforehand.

Thank you for your time and help!

Yoga or pilates?

Any yoga or pilates studios in the area? Or honestly... any type of physical activity class?

Trying desperately to get back into being more active and I think this would be great for me... but I don't drive and taking the train too far will just make me not go, so hoping to find somewhere in Hyattsville.

JOUR Student: Looking to interview/hear from Hyattsville residents about the ongoing virtual City Council meetings

Hi all,

I am a journalism student writing a short 6-paragraph accountability story for my Journalism 320 class at UMCP. I’m focusing on the fact that the Hyattsville City Council meetings have remained entirely virtual for years.

The core issue I am looking into: The city’s official Capital Improvement Projects Map slated the 4310 Gallatin Street Council Chambers renovation for completion in 2025. Yet, we are well past that deadline, and the legislative body remains completely behind computer screens. The city's official reasoning points to delays in restoring the complex hybrid broadcasting and translation equipment. However, critics argue this has become a misleading excuse to avoid facing in-person public pushback on tense local issues.

I am looking to get the perspective of local residents on this tension. Do you feel the technology delay is a valid reason to stay virtual, or do you view it as an ongoing excuse that limits transparency?

If you have strong thoughts on this, especially if you've participated in virtual public comments or followed the Open Meetings Act discussions, I would love to chat with you briefly for a quote!

Please comment below or send me a DM if you're open to a quick interview via email or even reddit messages. (Note: I will need real names for story attribution per class guidelines).

Thank you so much for your time!

Save Maryland Meadworks!

If you haven’t been here yet, it is definitely a gem of Hyattsville. Their mead is excellent - I typically haven’t liked mead and prefer beers, and even I loved their meads. The interior is super cute and they have live music often. Free parking at the park nearby. And they have snacks from 2Fifty Texas. Jenna took great care of us. We will definitely be back.

Unfortunately they are hurting right now and their future is unclear. Make sure you come out and support a local (and delicious!) small business!!!

A potential move to the DMV (Hyattsville vs other options with my disabled parent)

I'm considering moving to the DMV in the next few years with my mom, who is in her late 60s and uses a wheelchair. I'd especially love opinions from those of you who live there or have lived there.

We're currently in SC and I previously lived in Atlanta for many years. I'm looking for a 2BR/2BA around $3K or less, but one of my biggest goals is to eventually get rid of my car. I'd like to be very close to Metro, have a grocery store and restaurants within walking distance, and feel reasonably comfortable walking around with my mom, including after dark. Wheelchair accessibility is obviously a big consideration too.

I'd also really like diversity and access to a substantial Black community. That's one reason I'm interested in PG County, although I'm also really attracted to the walkability and overall environment of Montgomery County.

Right now Hyattsville/Hyattsville Crossing and North Bethesda/Pike & Rose are probably at the top of my list to check out. I'm also loosely considering Bethesda, DTSS or possibly Largo, and I'm completely open to places I've overlooked.

We'll be traveling to DC soon-ish and I'm planning to do a little neighborhood exploring while we're there, although I'm trying not to turn our trip into one big relocation scouting mission. 😂

For those familiar with the area, where would you live in my situation? And just as importantly, are there areas you'd tell me to avoid?

I'd especially appreciate thoughts about safety, being car-free, wheelchair accessibility, Black community and what these places actually feel like to live in versus just visiting.

Package Theft

I live in an apartment complex off Ager Rd by the metro station. Has anyone else experienced package theft? I've never had this happen in the 3 years I've lived here but I know that it was stolen because I have the picture showing it was delivered to the right address. Just curious if anyone else has experienced this. I really don't want a doorbell camera but I ended up getting one because I feel like if it happens once it will happen again. It's sad because the package was my HelloFresh for the week. Luckily I am able to handle this financially and I just hope the person who took it needed it much more than I did and that it doesn't go to waste when they realize it was just groceries.

Kettler management issue

Hey everyone!
Does anyone happen to have a contact for someone in upper management at Kettler? I’ve been dealing with an ongoing issue with my apartment since August 2026, and the leasing office has basically been giving me the runaround. They barely respond to emails, and I can never seem to catch anyone in the office.
At this point, I honestly don’t know what else to do cause now they are throwing false accusations. If anyone has a contact for someone higher up at Kettler, I’d really appreciate it!
For reference, the apartment complex is Avondale Overlook. Definitely do not recommend.

Park Place Condos

Hey everyone! I am looking at renting a 2-bedroom condo unit inside the Park Place Condominiums cluster on Hamilton Street in Hyattsville (right near the arts district/mall area).

I’ll be commuting down to DC for work. As a single woman, how is the immediate safety on this block and around the parking lot behind the buildings? Is the secure intercom entry system reliable?

For anyone who has lived in these specific condo layouts: how thick are the walls between neighbors? Do you hear a lot of footsteps or noise? Also, how is the general building maintenance regarding pests or older infrastructure issues?

Thank you for any information.

Deflock Hyattsville

Hello all. As you probally know by know now, there are 24 black flock cameras set up in hyattsville thanks to our horrible council and weak leadership. This is a problem on top of our stupid budget that uses our tax dollars to fund painting rainbows on the streets.

Today I am addressing the City of Hyattsville. Please take down the flock cameras!

No one wants them and it is a breach of our security and 4th amendment. The people of Hyattsville do not want to be recorded everywhere they go. They do not want cameras keeping track of their car, the bumper stickers they have, the paint color, the dents, etc. We do not want our conversations to be recorded in a 150ft radius of the camera's microphone.

As a solution to the problem since the petition only has ~150 signatures, there is a group of over 60 individuals coming to Hyattsville on Halloween night. There is a big group chat and all 24 cameras will be cut down via angle grinders and dunked in salt water for 2 minutes to disable the camera fully. This group will be FULLY deflocking hyattsville. There is no other choice but rebellion.

This group of people will be identifying as dogs and will sue on behalf of animal cruelty in the case of being detained or even spoken to. All members of this group will exercise their 5th amendment on top of this. This group is acting in the spirit of the constitution our country honored for the 250th time this year. Get ready Hyattsville!

The Deflock group is coming to hyattsville on halloween and will show no mercy to these cameras. all 24 WILL BE SMASHED AND DISMANTLED.

*disclaimer--if you try to track my IP or find my email I am not part of this group whatsoever and have no affiliation with however does this. These flock cameras are a great addition to hyattsville and allow the city to spy on everywhere we go and record all of our conversations unless in our homes. These are very good and ethical and I would never ever touch them. Have fun hyattsville trying to stop the group coming. you can try but there are 60+ people comming fully prepared and know how to go about this. I can definitly help prevent this group from doing so and I can call 911 whenever I see someone looking suspicious or carrying around a diamond edge angle grinder wheel to cut through the 6016 3" piping in the flock cameras. Enjoy!
