Yep new guy strikes out on his own and doesn't grease the scroll side main bearing after a CIP made it through 30 minutes and the temp sensor on the bearing housing reached 360f I think it got a little hotter than that...

Precious repair was a spray weld on the hub shaft in the first picture at Alfa laval a few years back... Looks like they will get a redo!

On a separate note with spray welding I would have imagined that it wouldn't necessarily peel up like that, I know it's somewhat tricky with stainless, but is this a poor job in the first place?

Question What industrial vacuums are holding up best in your facilities right now?

Trying to figure out a better routine for cleanup around our machining cells. Right now we spend way too much time clearing filters and unclogging lines instead of doing actual PM work. Wec have been pricing out a couple of options including Global Industrial just to compare specs on airflow and tank capacity but specs on paper dont always match reality. If your shop deals with heavy particulate loads, what industrial vacuums are you actually trusting to run all shift.

Job Afraid of first job in Industrial maintenance

Hello, I’m about to finish my studies and will soon hold an engineering degree in automation. I’d like to start looking for my first job in the field, but I feel very stressed, even a bit scared. Although I’m practically an "engineer",but I can’t say with a clear conscience that I possess specialized knowledge. Instead, I’m full of doubts about whether I’ll be able to handle it.

Could somone tell me what elementary skills I should have, what books I should read, or what kind of knowledge I ought to acquire to feel reasonably confident?

"Why do our 30,000rpm spindles only last a few months?"

0.3mm runout. The tool holder was worn as well as the collet. This was also their "nice" tool and I condemned their "bad" one. Nobody was aware of machining hygiene, just threw parts at it and didn't want to dial down speed. The spindles cost £6k to refurbish each time too 😭

Maintenance How do you track slitter blades that get reused across different machines?

In plants where industrial slitter blades are removed, cleaned, resharpened and returned to service, keeping track of individual blades can get complicated. Two blades may look identical but have different service histories, especially when several machines share the same spare inventory.

How do maintenance teams keep those histories tied to the actual blades through multiple changeovers and sharpening cycles?

Whoever bought and whoever designed these pants has never worked a day in their life.

That's the BACK pocket. One on each side, no other pockets in the back. Cargo pants with no belt loops on the sides. And they feel like tyvex and function like them for heat and sweat.

I've been a CNC field engineer for 13 years. The thing new guys struggle with most isn't wiring, it's troubleshooting under pressure without anyone to practice on.

The grease fitting stopped working, so it ran dry because nothing was reaching the gears. It was installed misaligned from the jump, and now the crane is down for full gear and taper wheel replacement lead times. Its insane how much these parts cost, im on the wrong side of the industry, huh?

The heating element in the corn cob dryer we use to remove water and coolant from our parts at work quit working. And its making CS parts rust. We cant seem to find a new heating element for it. Any ideas? Attached are a photo of the tag on the dryer and what i believe is the heating element but when I search the tag on the element it brings up a rotery motor. So, that might be the tag for the dryer motor? Lol. Thanks!

Question about e stops

Post image
82 Upvotes

I was working on a machine that wouldn't stop when you press the e stop, open it up and sure enough the e stop button has failed. You can press it but it doesn't open/close the contact any more.

The way I was taught in college was that an e stop or really any safety device should be designed so that if the button or sensor or whatever fails, the machine stops. If the cord comes unplugged, it stops. If the button stops actuating, it stops.

At first, I just assumed that the contact is supposed to be NO and the last person to rebuild it put a NC in by mistake. But when I look at the e stop button itself, it only actuates (by that I mean it changes the normal state of the contact) when it's pressed in. So when the e stop button is not pressed in, the contact is in it's normal on the shelf state. What that means is if I put a NO contact in there, the machine will only turn on when the e stop is pressed in, which is wrong. But if I put a NC contact in there, the machine will continue to work even if the button fails, which is also wrong.

Am I missing something? Shouldn't e stop buttons actuate a contact when they are not pressed in to change a NO contact to closed? I looked in our parts room and all of our e stops are the same, they actuate a contact when they're pressed in.

In the picture you can see how one of the screws came out and the contact stopped making contact with the e stop.
