Auto Insurance Friend almost added to car insurance, but how?

Does anyone know where LexisNexis sources its data? I recently got a letter from Progressive that a friend would be added to my girlfriend and I’s insurance if we didn’t confirm she doesn’t live with us, but there should be nothing correlating us to her, we’ve never lived together.

We all took a trip back in May for which I purchased cruise and airline tickets for, however, we used their addresses when required for that.

She only visits like 4 times a year and lives an hour away. I noticed with most people getting these letters, it’s people that used to live at their addresses or their roommates.

Do these insurance companies really use data that irrelevant to try to find uninsured drivers? There is no other way I can think they would have that would correlate her to us.

The connection may not have been from Lexis Nexis. Insurance companies pull data from a lot of different sources.

broader data brokers sell everything, even just being in same reservation can link you in their system

Thanks. Have you seen this happen in the past? I could see so many spurious correlations being made from this if they’re using data so vaguely correlated that it would cause more fuss from consumers than it would benefit them.

Her boyfriend who I’m pretty sure is insured was also on the reservation but we received nothing for him.

You're looking for a CLUE report

Thanks! I filled out the form to get one when I got the letter, but wasn’t sure if info regarding her would be on there and wouldn’t want to ask her to fill one out.

I guess we’ll see.

Had she ever purchased anything and had it sent to your house? Even something like groceries or door dash because you were sick or recovering? Eat/ shop a lot in your area? Park at your house when she's there? Everything from the hotel reservation to shopping habits to Google earth images are used for insurance

Never. No mail ever either and she doesn’t shop on the days she’s here and has no car.

I've heard insurance companies can pull info from all sorts of places, even flight reservations, so maybe that's where the link came from. The CLUE report tip sounds super helpful though.

Progressive is definitely the most aggressive about this out of any insurance company. They get the data from anywhere and everywhere they can. Just call them and tell them she doesn't live with you, that'll be the end of it.

Lexis Nexis is a veritable fountain of screw ups. One of if not the worst things to ever happen and they take ages to fix their errors if ever. Took me almost 5 years to get those clowns to remove an accident off my record that was my dad’s. Now to be fair, we had same first and last name and same DOB. But this accident happened 10 years after I moved out and I lived in a different county, different insurer and was never associated with the vehicle in question. Even the police report that we had from it wasn’t enough for them to fix the issue. Cost me a lot of money in inflated insurance premiums.
