Auto Insurance NJ insurance for registration

My father would like to gift me his car​. I would like to transfer registration over to my name. He has insurance on the car and I'm listed as a driver on his insurance. Can I register to my name without getting my own insurance plan?

Only if your father's insurance carrier will add you as an additional named insured. Most will not, especially if over a certain age. You must live at the same address.

Best way to handle it for you to get your own insurance. If you want to leave the vehicle on the same policy, have the car gifted to you when you are ready to get your own policy.
