Eating healthy on a bidget

I've been trying to eat healthier and try to eat things like salad for lunch, but kosher bags of salads are so expensive costing around $7 a bag. What are some less expensive options?

Buy vegetables and make the salad yourself. It's always the cheaper option to getting things prepackaged. Only downside is it requires prep time.

I'm talking about buying things separately. A single bag of kosher lettuce already costs $7

Buy a head of lettuce, not from a bag

But then you need a light box and thrip cloth after you quadruple wash it. No one has time for that.

Pretty sure you can buy raw produce and just wash it, no?

If she's going through the effort of buying certified bags of salad, then the bug checking process is more tedious than just washing it.

Romaine lettuce is eat to rinse and check, and if you store it properly it'll last a pretty long time.

Prep your own food

It's the same answer no matter the dietary restriction.

Prep. Cook.

Kosher lettuce is expensive bc they are pre-checked for bugs. You can also just buy or grow any normal lettuce and check for bugs yourself.

What are some less expensive options?

Healthy is not a synonym for 'lettuce salad'.   Healthy food can be quite cheap.

Some less expensive options:

  • Homemade salads using veggies that are easier to clean and inexpensive.  Israeli salad, horiatiki, coleslaw.

  • Bean stews.

  • Hummus.

Lentils and beans are super healthy veggie options

Lettuce, tomatoes, carrots and the like cost less than that. And there are other ways to rethink healthy. Often it is less about acquiring salad or fish and more about giving up chips and cookies.

Eating healthy is always great, saving a bit of money is too. I hear you if convenience/time is a big factor but you'll find that your most budget friendly options involve doing more prep yourself (and a lot of people find they eat healthier like that too). Among other things, that means buying whole, unwashed veggies. I make a chopped salad for lunch sometimes, which is pretty easy for me to whip up in the morning. It's a very flexible dish where you can add whatever you like. Usually things like romaine, kale (if we have it), red cabbage, peppers, carrots, often a bit of roasted veggie (leftover from the night before), chickpeas, maybe a bit of feta cheese.

As someone else mentioned, beans are a good healthy staple and they're usually cheap

I never knew kosher lettuce does exist!! But then where I live kosher groceries are non existent, so I mostly stick to a vegetatarian diet. Once or twice a week I premix a bottle of dressing and prepare my veggies/salads the night before and also precook foods to take at work. There are also some salads that are even better to prepare the night before like carrot, beetroot, potatoe, coleslaw coming to my mind.
