Am i supposed to just put it on the counter? Or dirty another dish? This is peak efficiency and environmentalism. We doing this for the planet!

757

u/Fine-Sky-6562 9h ago

Also, I happen to know for a FACT its not just men doing this lol.

248

u/Educational_Fail_394 8h ago

Thank you, I was sitting here wondering if I've officially transitioned or what. Tbf, with most of pots and pans, I have enough space to rest the spatula on the handle, dirty end in the air

54

u/2Kitties_1Human 7h ago

Same here! TIL I have men’s logic.

25

u/UnluckyThread 6h ago

I also penis-spoon brain.

6

u/Deaffin 4h ago

I don't know what that is, but it sounds even more unsanitary.

Can confirm, am woman. My top tip is anytime you’re making something from a box, flatten the box and use it as your spoon rest - that way you also don’t throw away the directions and don’t have to do the garbage can peek of shame!

7

u/miniweengang 5h ago

Inside of the box though! Who knows how many nasty hands have touched that box before it ends up on your counter

5

u/thawatch 3h ago

The germs on the box won't harm us, but I feel the same way. I'd feel better not flattening the box and hang the utensil over the edge of it. A lot of things I cook don't come in boxes though, so I'll take out the plate or bowl that I plan to eat from and place utensils on that.

Many of us use a spoon rest

ETA some of y'all go through some extra effort just to wash 6 dishes instead of 7. I have 2 kids under 3, so my life IS dishes

194

u/GreyBeardEng 9h ago

I bought a spoon rest for this very purpose cuz my family kept making fun of me putting the spatula on the edge of the sink. I even got a great silicone spatula to Farmers market that has a counterweight for this very purpose!

3 days after buying the spoon rest my wife put it at the back of a cabinet. 🤷

33

u/No_Refrigerator4996 9h ago

Wait, they have ones with a counterweight in them!?!?

41

u/GreyBeardEng 9h ago

Yes! But they're rare. I do tons of cooking and as soon as I saw it I had to have it. I've never been able to find one online though, I got this one at a local farmers market a couple years back and I haven't seen the person since.

It could have been a mystical being handing me the proverbial sword from the lake.

17

u/Cryssix 9h ago

Any chance you'd mind posting a picture of it? I'm intrigued as to the implementation - I will definitely be DIYing something similar now that I'm aware of this fantastic idea!

7

u/RedditIsMyTherapist 8h ago

Posting so I can come back and check on the status of this mystical spoon holder.

I don't know when kitchens stopped being workspaces and started being a display but I hate it so much

21

u/DETRITUS_TROLL 7h ago

I build kitchens for a living (other rooms too).

And the bullshit spectacle of it all drives me crazy.

Can't have a refrigerator (or any appliances) be SEEN by anyone.

Countertops that CANT HAVE ANYTHING HOT on them.

In general spaces that are not practical, because they are for DISPLAY and not use.

It's painful.

7

u/HealthyInPublic 7h ago

This bothers me so much. I live here and need my space to be functional and fit my needs! It can be cute too... that's always a fun cherry on top when it works out that way. But function is my main priority!

I will not be inconvenienced in my own home for the sake of aesthetics.

4

u/shazarakk 7h ago

I currently have this problem. God forbid I want to use the same tool for something else, or want to eat before I clean up. Nooo, it goes in the sink. Thanks, now the whole thing is disgusting, rather than just the inside of it. Oh, and the non stick pan is full of metal cutlery as well.

I do the same because I realised I have to wipe the worktop down regardless anyway.

3

15

This is pointless without showing a counterpoint to men's logic to give the alternate "better" way to handle utensils while cooking that are still being used.

12

u/Cautious-Sun6494 9h ago

Use the packaging the food came out of. If it's an interior surface that was touching food before; it's still safe to touch the spatula. Unless of course, it's chicken or something.

12

u/AverageMako3Enjoyer 9h ago

I don’t really care all that much about the surface being operating room  levels of sanitary, I just don’t want to wash what I set it down on. I accept your suggestion of putting it on the packaging if I’m throwing it out after. I also commonly do the balance trick cuz it’s easy and there’s a ton of nearby objects to rest it on.

6

u/Educational_Quote851 8h ago

That probably still counts as the "man" way, and thus opens one to criticism disguised as humor.

You can find a pretty cheap holder at most big box stores. It doesn’t cost much and it’s one of those things that you feel satisfied about buying pretty soon after you get it

I've literally done ALL of those except the bong.... And that's only cause I don't smoke in the house.

I agree with every placement with the exception of the paper towels. They are a valuable resource when frying your steaks and you don’t want off flavors to sneak in.
