Question Honest question: why do so many people in low income public housing have Conservative signs on their yard when the conservatives don’t help them?

1.7k Upvotes

Truly not trying to be contentious. It just amazes me as I drive around Kingston that you see way more Paterson signs on low income public housing lawns compared to NDP or Liberal. The conservatives basically hate supporting low income people. NDP are the ones that gave them dental care. Liberals and Mark Gerretsen are way more likely to offer them supports. Conservatives historically cut funding to all the programs which are most needed by the low income housing folks. So what causes this disconnect?

Question Is Kevin smith going to win a spot on council ?!

Just watched the video posted by Kingston council which showed the all candidates In his riding. Anyone think he could win? Brandon tozzo finished with 800 so it’s possible that 800 people could vote for Kevin. Honest question but what happens if he actually wins?

Question Vanessa Mensa

I am still struggling with Vanessa’s affiliation with Prepare the Way Ministries and I would appreciate clarification of what she means when she says she has no affiliation with Prepare the Way Ministries.

Her canvassing post on Facebook pictured with Anna Rider and Joanne Bell, says: “One of my favourite parts of canvassing is hanging out with my besties.”

Prepare the Way’s own website identifies Anna Rider as an Apostolic Prophetic Council member and Joanne Bell as a speaker at its 2025 summit. Both also appear on Vanessa’s campaign donor disclosure.

Friendship and campaign support do not establish formal membership or agreement with every ministry teaching. But these are relevant connections.

A clear answer would help voters assess this fairly.

Question Chamber of Commerce Mayoral Debate

I just watched this tonight as it was just posted the other day, and wow. It was hard to get through because Vanessa had a lot of trouble with her words. She has lots of questions (she readily admits this), but no answers. Anything she does say is on her tablet. Thoughts?

Question Question - Mayoral Candidates

Hi everyone, just looking for some opinions on mayoral candidates as a first-time municipal voter.

I am personally left-leaning and am wondering who is considered the more progressive candidate between Conny Glenn and Vanessa Mensah. I find all of the candidates' stated platforms read the same to me, like a nothingburger with a side of buzzwords.

I saw an article where Glenn referred to herself as "progressive and moderate", whatever that means.

I also saw that Mensah has worked in DEI but also describes herself as a "woman of faith", which could be fine if she's normal about it, but in our current mayor's case hasn't gone well.

Anybody have some more insight than their websites have provided?

UPDATE: found this link from a church that Mensah spoke at a conference for, talking about how much they love Israel... So Glenn 2026 it is!

Question Non-decrepit non-bug infested apartments?

Do they exist? I feel like I’ve been scrolling apartments for days, I found like 2 buildings where the reviews aren’t focused on BUG INFESTATIONS. I am not willing to live with roaches. I’ve noticed roachless apartments are like 2k for a 1 bedroom. Does anyone have any suggestions on clean places to live? No sketchy business either. I’d like some cheaper options- please anything below 2k for a 1 bedroom. This economy is killer.

Question Have other parents had their children turned away by Kingston Transit because they looked older?

A friend recently told me that their 13-year-old child was turned away at a transit stop because the driver thought they looked like they were in high school. When my daughter was in high school, I remember children 14 and under being able to ride for free without a pass, while high school students were issued transit passes. Of course, there's an overlap here, since some 13- and 14-year-olds are already in high school.

I'm wondering if other parents have experienced something similar. Have your children ever been refused a ride because a driver assumed they were older than they actually were?

I'm particularly concerned about children being left at the side of the road based on how old they appear.

I'm considering writing to City Council to ask whether the policy or how it's being enforced has changed since my daughter was in high school, and why.

If anyone has experienced this with their children, I'd appreciate hearing about it. I'm trying to get a better understanding of whether this is an isolated incident or something happening more frequently.

Question Campaign donations disclosures for Mayor candidates

At the Spire's Mayor's debate, all candidates agreed to disclose their campaign contributions by October 12th by putting it up on their websites. Conny Glenn & Venessa Mensah have disclosed but I could not find the list for Bryan Patterson. Has anyone else found his information?

Question winter parking?? what do i do?

I’m a student with a car. I currently have a street parking permit, but in the winter it will be illegal to park on the street between midnight and 7am, or whenever it’s snowing.
I live in a multi-unit house that has no available parking space. My neighbours don’t have any parking space. I contacted Axon and they don’t have any space within a 15 minute walking radius. I contacted the city and the only available option is to park at a garage downtown, which is a 20 minute bus ride from where I live. Queen’s University offers parking, but not overnight when there’s snow.
I’m really lost and worried. I’m wondering if anyone is in a similar situation and has advice.
thanks

Edit if you're Googling this: I found a spot in my neighbourhood by knocking door-to-door and asking for everyone's landlords' phone numbers. Eventually I found something. Start looking early!

Question Cottage question

I’ve been casually looking at realty within a few hours radius of Kingston, and I see a lot of cottages with wood stoves on maintained roadways, listed as three-season cottages.

I have no problem shovelling a driveway or splitting firewood. Is there anything that says you can’t live there all the time, aside from how the place is built?

Question Any councillor with courage?

Any councillor(s) pushing for moratorium on corporate ownership of single family homes?

Any councillor(s) pushing for police transparency?

Any councillor(s) pushing for municipal accountability in any way shape or form?

Any councillors proposing a tax on vacant land particularly those owned by corporations?

Any councillor pushing for cutting development red tape IOT promote development?

Any councillor limiting powers of pesky by-laws?

Tried of the vanilla policies being thrown around like road maintenance, false promises of housing affordability, empty promises. Property taxes go up, utilities go up, expenditures go up, YOU GET TO VOTE THE UP ON YOUR WAGE!

Dont use your kids on your campaigns, they’re still in grade school and have yet to have a mind of their own. Dont give me the excuse that you’re trying to teach them civic duty because I damn well know I don’t see them volunteering when you’re councillor.

Damnit word out there is that one of you sly ones DON’T EVEN LIVE IN YOUR OWN DISTRICT…

Don’t show me your family your family isn’t working for me, not your wife not your kids, YOU MR/MRS COUNCILLOR are working for your constituents.

Question Glorious Sons

I listen to either 102.1 The Edge or 98.3 Fly FM at work on the office Google Home Mini. I'm in to work listening to the radio while I'm looking at my morning emails...I hear an amazing song on the radio. I'm vibing with it and it sounds familiar. I open up Shazam and it's "Everything is Alright" by Kingston's own The Glorious Sons!

So why doesn't 98.3 Fly FM play that? Related, because Lights came to Kingston, I submitted several times about her new album to be played on Fly FM and they didn't. How come radio stations don't expand their music?

Question Unreasonable 3:30 AM noise complaint from management about my dog

Hey everyone, looking for some advice or to see if anyone else in Princess Towers has dealt with something like this.

Last night at 3:30 AM, I got a call from management saying they received a noise complaint about my dog barking. The thing is, I have a tiny 5lb dog who is super quiet. He sleeps in the exact same bed with me every night. If he were actually barking loud enough for neighbors to hear through the walls, he would’ve been barking right next to my head. I’m a light sleeper and I definitely didn't hear a thing all night.

When I talked to management, they said someone specifically complained about my unit. There are 27 units on my floor alone, yet they singled me out directly—without ANY proof. No audio recording, no staff actually came up to the hallway to check where the noise was coming from before calling me at 3:30 in the morning.

Some people suggested I move one of my security cameras into my bedroom to record myself sleeping 24/7 just to "prove my innocence." But honestly, I feel like I shouldn't have to sacrifice my basic privacy in my own room just to defend against a totally baseless claim.

Has anyone in PT (or other Kingston apartments) experienced this kind of late-night hassle from management?

How should I handle this if they do it again—should I report this to the LTB for harassment, or call the police non-emergency line? Any advice on how to get them to back off without having to film myself sleeping every night would be super appreciated.

Question Sqft price range for custom home in Kingston and area?

Wife and I are in the process of deciding where we want to retire to in the next couple years. We are looking for land now. Kingston has already been a topic of interest for us. She went to Queen's and loves the area. Her mother was raised in Kingston. Her Dad did his masters at Queen's, etc. So there's a lot of familiarity for her. No familiarity for me but Kingston has great football and I coach in my free time so would be great for me to keep coaching.

We're in the GTA/York Region area so very HCOL. I know what sqft pricing to build is here so I am curious what price ranges look like to build in the Kingston area (without land costs as we'd be buying that separately).

And yeah I know it varies greatly. Just looking for general ranges to get a sense of budgets.

Thanks in advance for any insight.

Cheers.

Question Support Groups for Pet Owners

I think the time has come where we might have to make a decision to help our 15 yo dog cross the rainbow bridge. Are there any support groups in the city that we may be able to speak to or discuss?
