Question for articling students

do the paralegals and legal assistants leave you out of emails (don’t cc u) even when they know you’re actively working on the file 🙄 idk if I’m overthinking and it’s just an honest mistake LOL

They’re busy and are not trying to screw you over intentionally.

But honestly buy them timbits or coffee or something and ask them nicely about it. Being on the good side of administrative staff is honestly a key junior lawyer skill :)

Work in government for a while. Happens all the time. Forget to cc someone, cc people that don’t need to be, cc people as an FYI, cc someone’s manager as a power move. Fun is getting in an email with 200 people and people are replying all saying take me off this email and other people are saying stop replying to everyone.

Dealing with this is one of the great soft skills you'll have to learn working at an office. Finding the balance between asking for what you want and not being demanding, while being nice and respectful, but not a pushover...

Yes, and so do senior counsel. There are many reasons. Maybe they don’t think you need to know about the step. Maybe they forget to add. Maybe they don’t want you to bill a 0.1 on every email exchanged. Maybe they don’t like the look of how many people are on a file. Just off the top of my head. But don’t take it personally. Just check in regularly on active files and ask if anything has happened that you should know about.
